Middle School Progress Reports for Students on IEPs

Middle School Special Education Progress Reports (Grades 6-8) are due on by the end of day on Thursday, April 21st.  Please inform Jessica or Joyce if you are not able to complete them.  It is mandatory that all SPED Progress Reports are completed in SEIMS.

LGBTQ Picnic

I know that there is a lot of information out there but I am checking with Mark Racine the District's Director of Technology regularly to make sure that you have all the necessary information. 5 Steps to Preparing you School for the PARCC Assessments 

• Familiarize yourself with the changes from paper-based to online assessments. Compare traditional question types to online assessments using this question mapping tool for elementary students and middle-school students. 
• Give staff & students a practice test in the testing platform. Visit the PARCC Practice Test site to take samples for ELA or Math 
• Familiarize staff & students with accessibility and accommodation features. View the full accessibility manual here or take a practice test using large print, TTS, accommodated screen reader, ASL, or Braille versions by visiting the practice test page. 
• Prepare students by walking them through the PARCC tutorial prior to the actual assessment. Visit TestNav tutorial page to practice in the TestNav app.

3/29/16 Daily Bulletin

Shout Out

Shout out to Elan Peng, Renia Zerai, Santi Roquet, Victoria Merritt and Steve Snekvik for coming in 3rd at the Destination Imagination States- one spot away from qualifying for the Global Finals in Tennessee. Their structure weighed less than a 1/4 of a pound and supported 715 pounds. It could have held more, but they ran out of room on their post!). More info: They competed in the structural challenge of the state Destination Imagination competition, after winning Regionals last week. DI is a creativity, problem solving, and teamwork competition and in their challenge they had to build a structure that supported weight and was ALSO a musical instrument, have a musical character and a musical costume, and integrate weight placement on their structure into their storyline. They had to present their entire solution in the form of a skit. They also had to compete in an instant challenge, which they knew nothing about until it was presented to them on competition day.

Winter Term Report Card Grading Window for Grades 1-5

The winter grading window for students in grades 1-5 is will open from March 7th to March 24th. Please refer to the materials below for instructions on entering grades. Reminder: After entering or editing grades in the scores tab, teachers must click Post Grades to write the grades to the report cards. Grades will be saved as you enter them but they will not appear on the report cards until you click Post Grades.

Shout out to Lesley Peck-Oser, Sara Silverstein and Lindsey Wright for assisting with interview for the open SAR position on Friday afternoon. Thank you for your time and dedication to assure we have the best program for students with intellectual impairments.

Shout out to Arleta Faulkner and Mary Ellen Liacos for taking students on Saturday to see an Alvin Ailey production. They had an enjoyable time and we able to make connections between their work in dance class and on stage. Thanks!

Shout out to Kim Taylor Knight for hosting a FABULOUS performance of Into the Forest: Fairytales that Move Us. All students in K0, K1 and K2 performed and were lead by the Curley Ambassadors of Dance (CAD), this means about 200 students were on stage Friday morning!!!! We also want to thank our Art teachers for creating the set designs, thanks Jesse Cardoso, Cathy Drakes and Anna Youman.

 

Shout out to Elan Peng, Renia Zerai, Santi Roquet, Victoria Merritt and Steve Snekvik for winning first place at the Destination Imagination Musical Mashup Regional Competition. The team will move on to the State Championship in Worcester this coming weekend. Way to go!

 

Shout out to Willa Davis, Trudy Weeramuni, Ian Wright and Anna Zuniga for their participation in the Destination Imagination Scientific Regional Competition. They did not place but put on an amazing performance and worked collaboratively on their project.

Shout out Bianca Guerrero, Pat Freeman, and Alberto Guerrero for following the How To Offer Help Protocol this afternoon.  The educators saw that a student was engaging in challenging behavior but kept their distance and subtly offered help to the staff working with the student without providing additional attention to the situation.  Additional shout out to Corey Edmiston for assisting in clearing the hallway for a student transitioning.  He was able to neutrally redirect others to clear a path, keeping others safe, but without providing unnecessary attention.  Way to be a team!

Red Jacket Weekend 2016

Each year in September, City Year corps members and staff kick off their year of service with a large scale service day benefiting a school in our communities. We are very excited to announce that next year, the Curley K-8 will be the host and beneficiary of this event. On a Saturday in September, around 750 volunteers from the City Year community will be coming out to the Curley and the surrounding community for a day of volunteering that will be organized by a specialized team from City Year. Projects for this type of event can include painting, murals, organization, landscaping, light construction and the creation of resources for students and teachers.   Your input and feedback is essential for us to best align our projects with the needs of the school and we greatly appreciate you for taking the time to answer the questions using this link. This Wednesday, our team is excited to be hosting two events aimed at student academic and socio-emotional supports - a breakfast with City Year for raffle winners (7:45 - 8:40 am), and Progress Report Card Conferencing with 7th and 8th grade students (8:40 - 10:15 am, 12:20 - 1:50 pm). As a result, our team will not be morning greeting, and we please ask teachers to excuse them to support these events. On Wednesday, Mar. 16th PACE will hold a fundraiser. It is a family movie night from 5-7pm in the Upper School Auditorium. Tickets are $3 and will be sold at the door on the Centre Street entrance. All ages are welcome as long as children are accompanied by an adult and the ticket price will include water and popcorn. Our Hint about the Movie is... When I'm feeling happy, angry, scared, or sad I can watch this Oscar winning animated feature film and it is sure to make me feel glad. We will be holding a 50/50 raffle during movie night. Tickets can also be purchased during the day in the following PACE classrooms. Ms. Quarterson in room 111 or Ms. Mitchell in room 017 both are located in the upper school.

Ms. Taylor has agreed to let us use her room on Tuesdays from 2:45 to 3:30 to dance for fun. She will be running the warm up/cool down part of it. I see this as a way of relaxing, exercising and having fun for the staff. More details to come. First dance for fun will be Tuesday, March 15th at 2:45.

The final ANet assessment will begin next week for students. Curley Lion Dance and Kung Fu Team

The Curley Lion Dance and Kung Fu team will be starting practice on Wednesdays 2:45 at the Pershing Road School Yard. The class will be pay by donation. The class is geared toward older children but everyone willing to follow along is welcome to do so. We will cover some basic meditation, stances for strengthening and flexibility, Kung Fu moves for self defense, Lion Dance, drumming, Tai Chi exercises for rest, relaxation and health, and we will also sing a Kung Fu song for the purpose of group dynamics and self affirmation. The short term goal is to perform in the Wake Up the Earth Parade and to foster teamwork through practicing together and doing that parade together. The Long term goal is participate in performances as a stand alone team, as well as with other teams throughout Boston. The even longer term goal is for students from this class to teach the younger children at the Curley what they have learned, and perhaps to teach other schools in the area as well. Student ID Numbers

As part of the corrective action plan of the DESE Administrative Review, the district is required to provide documentation of student identification to ensure accurate accountability of each meal served. Students are required to learn their six digit BPS ID number. We are are working with the cafeteria staff to ensure a smooth implementation of this mandate. Thus, before your students go to lunch tomorrow:

• Please write your students ID numbers in a card or sticky note
• In the next few days, help them memorize their ID numbers 
• Please send and pick up your students on time to ensure that the cafeteria workers have time to input the student numbers in the system 

Eventually, students will be given a card with a bar code to swipe or enter their information on a pin pad after they get their food. Thank you for you for cooperation see Mr. Diaz if you have any questions.

As of 3/1/16 our positions were posted online at www.teachboston.org. We need your help in this hiring process and we want you to be on our committees. Here is the schedule, please check this schedule for interviews in the coming weeks and place your name on the spreadsheet to help interview. Red Jacket Weekend 2016

Each year in September, City Year corps members and staff kick off their year of service with a large scale service day benefiting a school in our communities. We are very excited to announce that next year, the Curley K-8 will be the host and beneficiary of this event. On a Saturday in September, around 750 volunteers from the City Year community will be coming out to the Curley and the surrounding community for a day of volunteering that will be organized by a specialized team from City Year. Projects for this type of event can include painting, murals, organization, landscaping, light construction and the creation of resources for students and teachers.   Your input and feedback is essential for us to best align our projects with the needs of the school and we greatly appreciate you for taking the time to answer the questions using this link. ANet Session 3

The final ANet assessment will begin next week for students. The purpose of this testing plan is to prepare students for PARCC both in terms of clarifying their small group accommodations as well as building their stamina for testing on days back to back. PARCC

Here is the PARCC Draft Schedule for May. Please take time to review this and send all ideas, questions and concerns to David Diaz on how to best improve this schedule. It is important that we solidify these dates on the calendar. We will need "All Hands On Deck" during this testing window. Please send all feedback to David by Friday, March 4th.

Curley Silent Auction

The Curley School Parent Council (SPC) will be hosting their Annual Silent Auction at Canary Square on Tuesday, March 29th and would like to extend an invite to all staff and their friends and family. If you are interested in donating a prize to the auction please contact Molly Brigham by February 22nd at mollykbrigham@gmail.com. In the past some staff have donated an afternoon with their teacher to get an ice cream at JP Licks, Principal for the Day, lunch with your teacher, etc... The SPC is open to any of your ideas and really appreciates your time (and the students love the prizes). The money raised from the Silent Auction goes to directly supporting our school such as CMCB, BalletROX, Arts supplies, science supplies, staff luncheon, Chromebooks etc...
