6/19/19 Daily Bulletin

Shout Outs

Shout out to Monica Cawley - ABA based classroom paraprofessional - for your unwavering support as we implement the new "drop off only" policy for students. Your high expectations for students and families has made implementation of the new arrival procedure seamless, and we appreciate your presence at the Pershing Road door every morning!

Shout out to everyone for remaining calm, cool, collected, and prepared for our fire drill today!

Shout out to Danielle West for taking the lead on report cards and ELD levels for 7th/8th. We appreciate you!

Early Release Schedule

Students will dismiss at 1pm on Tuesday, June 18th and Wednesday, June 19th. A reminder call will go to families but please remind any families you communicate with between now and then. Also there is NO CASP or after school program on those early release days so please make sure you know how students will be getting home. Here is the schedule for those two days.

Teacher Schedule

Tuesday and Wednesday are still full paid days for staff (teachers and paras). Teachers should be available until 3:25pm (Paras until 3:10pm). Don't forget to submit your Check-Out Checklist to the designated administrator as well as your keys!
If you need to finish up any packing/tasks, the building will be open on Thursday 6/20 and Friday 6/21.

Report Cards for Students with ELD Levels

Please make a copy of the report card for all students with an ELD level and place them in Sara Silverstein's box in the lower school office.

Report Cards for Students Who Have Left

If you have the report card for students who have already left for the summer, please write their address on the envelope (from SIS) and deliver to Kathy or Madeline in the office.

Top Ten Highlights of SY 2018-2019

There are so many moments to celebrate from school year 2018-2019. Here are the Top Ten highlights:

10. Kicking off our school year with lots of new 21st Century Furniture. This offered students alternative seating as well as easier access to group learning.

9. Our early childhood team collaborating and prepping for NAEYC Re-accreditation. We earned this accreditation at the start of the school year thanks to the collaborative efforts of the team.

8. We re-opened the school library for our community! Students now have more access to diverse texts and a space to enjoy and learn in.

7. The reset of tier 1 curriculum in middle school ELA, science as well as SFL training across grades 4-8. This will lead to greater consistency and vertical alignment across the school.

6. Increased inclusion opportunities for our students in substantially separate classrooms. Which has led to cross-program adult collaboration as well students learning collaboratively and supporting one another.

5. Curley T-Shirts were given out to every student. It is great to see them representing our community at shares, on field trips or just any day at school.

4. Hosting our first Acceleration Academy for middle school students in math. Students were willing to come to school for 4 extra days to learn math and improve their skills.

3. Robust arts displays and performances that represented the diverse cultures that make up our community!

2. Data cycles happening across this school! We are systematizing how we look at data to support our students in achieving and the early data we have says this plan is working! And then being able to mirror this after becoming a CBHM school and also using SEL data within these cycles as well.

The number 1 highlight from SY 2018-2019 was our school marching in the PRIDE PARADE. Our community showed how much we CARE by developing student leaders, creating t-shirts and welcoming all to our community! Thank you all for a great school year! 

Summer Reading Packets Distribution!

Summer reading packets were distributed to most K-7 classrooms on 6/12/19, with a few classrooms scheduled for delivery tomorrow. We suggest that teachers take a few minutes to review the packet contents and have students sign the "Summer Reading Pledge" prior to sending the summer reading information home. Thanks in advance for helping our students continue to grow as readers over the summer months. Please contact Eileen Cronin (Gr. 3-7) or Caitlyn Gable (K-2) if you need additional packets or have any questions.

Required Sickle Cell Disease Webinar for Teachers

Due 6/19/2019 Health Services has created a webinar about sickle cell disease policy/student supports. The webinar was sent via email to teachers June 7. Spring Grading Window K-8

The Spring term grading window for students in grades K0-8 is open from June 3 to June 16. Please refer to the materials below for instructions on entering grades.

Movies in School & Outdoor Play

June has arrived but there is a lot of learning time that remains. Movies and additional outdoor play should not replace classroom instruction. There are two ways movies/additional outdoor play can be used effectively during instructional time:
1) it is a video on the content and learning standards being studied for that grade level
2) over the course of multiple days students earned this opportunity

OUTDOOR PLAY during the hours of 10:00am-1pm is not allowed due to recess and 9:20-9:50 the play structures are used by the ABA team. This means PE and other activities cannot be on the field and play structures during this time. It is unsafe to have too many kids outside at the same time.

CPT Cycle May 6th - June 19th

As we close out the school year we want to map out the remaining weeks of CPT for teacher teams. Please check the Curley Work Plan Calendar for all your links to meetings and documents.

ANNOUNCING International Week Dates for SY 2019-20!

Based on data from the 2018 International Committee Feedback survey, International Week for the upcoming school year has been scheduled for the week of December 2-6, 2019. The expectation is that all 56 homerooms will participate in this cultural exchange, sharing what they learn with their buddy classes. As you make plans for next year, we encourage you to start thinking about a country to study and how it might connect to your curriculum


Field Trip Request Procedure

All field trips requests should be submitted in the following way, check out this powerpoint for additional information on the steps.
  • Fill out electronic form at least 2 weeks in advance. This link will be available in the blog daily. Field Trip Request Form
  • Print your form submission. 
  • Email list of students attending to nurses. 
  • Get nurse and cafeteria signature at least 2 weeks in advance. They can sign anywhere at the bottom of your page. 
  • Turn in to either main office. 
  • Pass out permission slips and have students return. (English p.12, Other Languages)
  • The SPC has allotted each grade level $500 to put towards field trips; any questions should be send to treasurer@curleyk8.com.

Shout Outs

Thank you to the Curley K-8 Community for your kindness and generosity at our surprise bridal shower this morning! It was so absolutely heartwarming to receive all that love and support from our colleagues as we look towards an exciting new chapter in our lives. Love, Meron, Laura, and Melanie

Shout out to all the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade teachers who took students on the field trip to Canobie Lake! Also shout out to Ms. Beaudrault and Ms. Boyd who took in the 6th graders not going on the trip, thanks for making the students feel welcome!

Shout out to Maureen Cullen, John DePalm, Elaine Cronin, and Mark Righini for helping set up/plan/run field day!

Detention

Adults should ask to see the pass to make sure it has the accurate date and time. Any adults in the building can assign detention if they find students in the hallway without a pass. Please see Ms. Jackson if you have further questions.

3/15/19 Daily Bulletin

Shout Out

Shout out to Connie Redden, Geju Brown, Keon Hill, Emanuela Alves, Melanie Bourgeault, Kim Taylor Knight, Ava Untermyer for leading and organizing the African American History Assembly for students and families today! Seeing students on stage empowered to perform and share their talents makes our school a better place. Our students learn so much about themselves by performing as well as the positive messages and learning that happens as an audience member. The energy and enthusiasm you all brought to the perform today was contagious! Thank you!


BTU Walk-In Tomorrow (Friday)

We will continue our Walk-Ins for a fair contract tomorrow, Friday, March 15, before school. If you haven't participated in the past, make sure you are out there this Friday, to represent your union, your profession, and to let everyone know about the schools our #StudentsDeserve! Please join us at the Centre St. lobby to pick up a sign at 7:55 a.m. We would like to have a strong showing from start to finish, standing united from 8:00-8:15, and walking in to school together.

Autism Awareness T-Shirt

Interim 3 Data

CPT Cycle March 3rd-May 3rd

Thank you to the teachers who provided feedback from the first 109 days of school regarding CPT time. We have heard that you are supportive of the structure but need more time to implement the CPT Cycles within the Curley Work Plan. We would like to propose that from 3/4/19-5/3/19 that teams will complete a CPT Cycle based on Interim 3 data (ELA for everyone but middle school math and science) as well as hold one climate meeting. Everyone will begin with CPT 1 starting the week of March 3, 2019. This will give teams between 6-8 CPT meetings (depending on days off) ato complete these items (The additional PDs can be for planning MCAS reviews in Math and ELA). Below are sample agendas for each CPT meeting. Team have the autonomy to map out these weeks so they can complete the full cycle by 5/3/19. See ILT representatives for more details.
  • CPT #1 - Looking at Data/Focus students - Review most recent forms of data (ELA Interim 2, Lexia etc…) in order to understand where your students are in connection to the grade level learning standards. Choose a focus standard/area for the upcoming unit plan.
  • CPT #2 - Unit Plan Overview - Preview the upcoming unit, specifically focus on where within this unit the focus standard/area you choose during CPT 1 and where it can be explicitly taught.
  • CPT #3 - Plan Lesson - Collaboratively plan one lesson as a team that relates to the focus standard/area chosen during CPT 1. This lesson should be based on the data from your assessment and be a highly assessed standard.
  • CPT #4 - LASW - All team members bring focus student work for the collaboratively planned lesson (CPT 3) and complete the protocol.
  • CPT #5 - Reflection - Take time to reflect on this CPT cycle.

Grade 5 is off to an early lead in the independent reading challenge, achieving 8.5% toward their reading goal for the marking period, followed closely by Grade 4 at 5.7% and Grade 3 at 4.7%. Way to go!

Curley Cares Student Awards

The Next Curley Cares assemblies will be held Friday, March 22, 2019 so take a moment to recognize students who are doing their best to support the Curley Cares way.
Use the MARCH 2019 FORM to submit names so students you work with can receive an award at our Friday, March 22, 2019 Curley Shares assemblies. If you'd like, please check out the list of students to review which students have already received awards this school year.

Math Facilitator Update

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has hundreds of free lessons plans and interactives at the Illuminations Web site. Lesson plans are organized by grade band: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 and brain teasers. The Interactives are free online games. MCAS Calendar grades 3-8

We have updated the Testing Schedule for the 2018-2019 Spring ELA, Math, and Science MCAS MCAS Calendar. Please revise the new dates and session times with your grade and content teams.
You also need to update your password to access the Pearson Access Next website. You should have received an email from Pearson requesting that you activate your username and password. Mr. Diaz, Jessica Burke, and Renee Ward are working on the list of small groups, proctors, and testing locations.
In addition, please review the slides about Monitoring Test Sessions and as well as the your Test Administrator Manual
Mr. Diaz will attending grade 3-8 CPT meetings through the month of March to review dates, schedules, access, and protocols. Please let Mr. Diaz know if you have any questions.

Special Education Progress Reports

  • 2nd round of Progress Reports are due in Edplan by 9 am March 20th for all grade levels. Please enter under Progress Report 1. Please make sure your name and title appear after the entry.
  • Progress Report Video please review the guidelines below as well. Progress Report Power Point
  • When entering progress reports please make sure you a entering in your domain/goal area. There are no headings and you will see all goals for all providers when you log in. Please be careful not to erase information in the text box. You can label your entry "2nd Marking Period 3.2019" or "Progress Report 2 March 2019". Please make sure your name and title appear after the entry.
  • Do not click Finalize. Click Save and Move On. Renee and I will do the finalization. If you finalize before all providers have entered they will be locked out.
  • It is important to be mindful of recent IEP meetings and pending parent response to a proposed IEP. If a new IEP is signed and entered during this period it will erase previously entered progress reports.
  • Please make sure you are writing progress on all benchmarks including level of support needed to accomplish that goal.

Field Trip Request Procedure

All field trips requests should be submitted in the following way, check out this powerpoint for additional information on the steps.
  • Fill out electronic form at least 2 weeks in advance. This link will be available in the blog daily. Field Trip Request Form
  • Print your form submission. 
  • Email list of students attending to nurses. 
  • Get nurse and cafeteria signature at least 2 weeks in advance. They can sign anywhere at the bottom of your page. 
  • Turn in to either main office. 
  • Pass out permission slips and have students return. (English p.12, Other Languages)
  • The SPC has allotted each grade level $500 to put towards field trips; any questions should be send to treasurer@curleyk8.com.

11/8/16 Daily Bulletin

Shout Out

Shout out to Nina Wessen for organizing a middle school Mock Election! The results will be out tomorrow! Thank you for valuing student voice and helping students to understand the importance of voting! A BIG shout out also to the staff who helped:

1. Many thanks to the hard working teachers who went over the ballot questions with their students. I was so impressed with some of the students who TOOK OUT THEIR NOTES (Melzer/Ferro/Peck-Oser/Iatrou?) during the election to help guide them through the ballot. There were these beautifully hand drawn notes or PSAs about each question? This made the election process go so much faster!

2. Thanks to our photographer and explainer, Amika, who took her time out on a Monday to volunteer to help students vote and to make copies of extra ballots! I couldn't have made it alive without you!

3. Thanks to Ms. Ferro, Ms. Moreno, Ms.Iatrou and Ms. Peck-Oser who stayed to help guide their students through the process, made sure they knew where to put things and made sure the line was not chaotic.

4. Thanks to the 6th Grade team who were so cool with doing voting in their classrooms because everyone wanted to vote and we ran out of time! (I have I Voted stickers for you!)

5. Thanks to Mr. Diaz, Mr. Guthrie, Ms. Jackson who stayed cool, calm and collected during the voting process. I know it was out of routine but you guys were awesome! Mr. Guthrie-I'm not even sure you were able to vote because of the long line!

6. Last but not least-I don't have their emails here but City Year was SUCH AN AMAZING help! I also could not have survived without them!

Election Day

Tuesday, November 8th is Election Day and the Curley is a voting site. This will mean a lot of traffic around our school all day and potential parking issues. Please keep this in mind as you commute to school for Tuesday. There will be many adults in our building if you see anyone walk through the building to vote please escort them to the nearest door and have them walk through the voting entrance. Also the SPC is hosting a bake sale outside by the Upper School parking lot. Any and all donations are welcome and if students bring in items please leave with Kathy and Madeline in the main office. Students should not visit the bake sale unless accompanied by a parent. Stairwell A (by the main office) will be off limits for the day.

ILT

Please join us for ILT on Wednesday, November 9th from 3pm-4:15pm in Room 214.

Veteran's Day

Just a reminder that there is no school on Friday, November 11th in observance of Veteran's Day.

Early Release

We will dismiss early on Wednesday, November 23rd for the Thanksgiving Holiday at 12:30pm. A schedule for the day will come soon.

Grades Close (6th-8th)

Grades close for all 6th-8th graders on Thursday, November 10th. All grades are due to be uploaded by Tuesday, November 15th. Please do not forget to click POST. If there are any issues with you student lists please see Ms. Jackson ASAP.

Reading Progressing Monitoring (Grades 3-8 Only)

Progress monitoring using the STAR Reading Assessment will begin this month for all students reading below grade level as determined by the fall STAR reading data. This includes students ranked “On Watch”, “Intervention” and “Urgent Intervention”. See the Reading Progress Monitoring Schedule below. Please note that there is no progress monitoring scheduled during January or June. The Winter and Spring Reading Benchmark Assessment will take the place of progress monitoring during these months. Please contact Eileen Cronin prior to conducting any progress monitoring activity to assure that individual student goals are in place and if you have any questions.

November, 2016 Curley Shares

Please submit student names for this month's Curley Cares student awards. Use this form to recognize up to three of the students you work with who exhibit consistent or improved understanding of the Curley Cares rules as demonstrated by a specific deed, general conduct, overall academic perseverance and/or improvement, or some other form of participation. All Curley K8 staff (not just homeroom teachers) can use the form to recognize students by giving a Curley Cares award. Take a look at this spreadsheet to see which students have already received awards.  Submissions are due by 8:00pm Monday, November 7 and will be presented to students during the Curley Shares assemblies to be held on November 10, 2016.

Staff Breakfast

Next Wednesday, November 9th, your City Year team would like to show our immense appreciation for all of you and the work that you do for the students at the Curley. We will be hosting a breakfast from 7:30-9:00 am in the teacher room in the upper school that will be open to anyone to come by when it is most convenient for you. There will be grab-and-go items if you don't have a lot of extra time, we know you're busy! Details are on the attached flyer, and we hope to see you there. Additionally, classroom teachers can pick up supply kits containing things like tissues and hand sanitizer as a gift from City Year.

Race Dialogues

Curley K-8 is partnering for the third time with YWCA Boston to offer Dialogues on Race & Ethnicity. We will be having an open, honest, and action oriented dialogue on race, ethnicity, and community. As a group we will learn about key concepts in racial equity and use personal experiences to foster deeper understanding of race’s impact in their lives. We will also develop an action plan to build a more inclusive and equity driven school community. 

At the Curley our core values are that We Care About Ourselves, We Care About Each Other, and We Care About Our School. Our community is a very diverse community so part of caring about ourselves, each other, and our school is being willing to engage in conversations about the different races and ethnicities that are apart of our community. By doing this we will build a stronger community bond by learning about and respecting the different cultures that we come from. 

So come out and be apart of our courageous conversation on race and ethnicity. We are looking to engage in conversations with a diverse audience. We will have our dialogues on race and ethnicity on 11/10, 11/17, 12/1, 12/8, and 12/15 from 5:30pm - 7:30pm. All bulletin boards should be updated by November 15th and each board should display student work (either final products or process) that ties directly to our instructional focus "Teachers will vary demands and resources, to optimize challenge in writing tasks, so students can express a clear, organized idea." International Week Update

We hope staff has made country choices! See Amika, send her an email at amika45@gmail.com or use the attached Google Drive spreadsheet to record your choice - if you have not, already. Also, there will be about a 30-minute meeting of the International Week Planning Committee on Thursday, November 3 in Upper School Room 208 (Mr. Tewksbury's Room) from 2:45 - 3:15 pm. New members are welcome.

Buddy Clean Up Information

Hello Curley Community,
Thank you for your participation in Buddy Day and at our Keep It Clean, Curley launch last week at Curley Shares.  There is a lot of excitement around these initiatives and we want to keep the momentum going! Beginning next week, we will launch our buddy cleanups.  Each class will be responsible for cleaning up their designated zone once each month.  You will decide on the time with your buddy teacher.

Schedule at least 20 minutes for your cleanup.  Once your zone is clean, you might choose to stay outside and have the littles teach their bigs a game they’ve learned during Playworks class game time. Thank you to Ms Guzman, Ms. Merdkhanian, Ms, Tefera, Ms. Solimini, Ms. Bryson, Ms. Mundo, Ms. Ciardi, Ms. Silverstein, Ms. Hins, Ms. Redden, Ms. Fleming, Ms. Signes and Mr. Melzer whose classes will be cleaning our campus next week. If you take photos of your classes cleaning up together, please send them to us or put them in this folder.  We will add them to the Keep It Clean bulletin board in the lower school entry.

We recognize that these activities can take away from instructional time, but remember there is teaching and learning involved in building cross grade relationships and doing service for our school community.   We welcome any feedback on this new initiative.  We want make it as simple and easy for you to gather with your buddies and keep our campus clean!
