Meet the Newest Member of our Leadership Team

My name is Dawn Durant. I am honored to be joining the Curley K-8 School community as your Director of Data, Development and School Culture. I grew up in Braintree and still live there with my husband and three teen-aged daughters. All three of my girls play golf for their high school team so my husband and I have spent the last three years learning how to play and have really grown to the love the game.

I have been working in education for 18 years. I started my career in special education in Braintree Public Schools. After working part time while my daughters were young, I returned to education full time in 2009 as a special education science teacher at the Rogers Middle School in Hyde Park. I worked there until its closing and joined the team at the Joseph Lee K-8 School in Dorchester. I worked as a special education teacher and LATF at the Lee. Upon receiving my administrators license, I was hired as the special education team chair at the Pierce Middle School in Milton in 2017. I am very excited to be returning to Boston Public Schools and look forward to working with all of you. Click here to read Dawn's Entry Plan. Flu Shots

Flu vaccine will be given 10/10/19 12pm-2pm in teacher's room. I am attaching the consent form. Please see April and Keilah if you have questions.

School Visits Next Week

Next week is a busy week! We will have a school visit by DESE. This is a part of a larger district review. Please see memo for further information. Also next week we will have our UVA site visit and a visit from Dr. Cassellius! There is lots to show off to our visitors and to celebrate. We expect you to continue teaching as you normally do as guests enter your class. More information will be shared once we receive it.

Instructional Coaching

As a School Leadership Team we are being coached this year around giving instructional feedback. Erin Flynn is coaching our team and you may see her or other central office staff with us when we observe in your classroom. Erin is working at our school 1-2 days a week and giving the leadership team feedback on this process. For more information on this model please read here.

Missed P&D and Class Coverage Payment Changes

Payroll would like missed P&D Periods and Para class coverage hours submitted monthly. Please submit your hours to Madeline or Kathy on Monday. Remember missed lunches are not covered. Moving forward all hours will be due on the last day of the month, every month.

Tech Removal 

Do you have old computers/ printers/ etc in your classroom or office that is collecting dust? If so, please email jgorham@bostonpublicschools.org by Friday 10/4/19 and let her know your room number and the items you want to get rid of. We have a tech removal company coming the following week to help us declutter.

Walk to School Day, October 2

Our school is participating in the Annual Fall Walk to School Day on Wednesday October 2, and we invite you to “join the movement!” Did you know that walking to school helps students arrive ready to learn? Like eating a healthy breakfast, physical activity gives our brain the boost it needs to focus. And we want our students to be prepared for the school day. This event is part of Safe Routes to School Boston, a city-wide effort to promote walking to school, by rallying neighborhoods and the community as a whole to work toward making walking to school safe, popular, and fun. The Curley Health and Wellness Committee is leading the effort for our school.

Register for the walk ahead of time, or just show up at 7:45 am on October 2 at one of the following locations:
• Spring Park Ave and Chestnut Ave
• Stop & Shop at 301 Centre Street
• South Street and Sedgwick Street

Open Circle

We wanted to invite all new or returning staff to an Open Circle Snack-N-Chat. On Tuesday October 22nd at 3:30, we will be in the lower school Room 118. If you have questions regarding your kit, bring it with you and if you are new to the building, we can assist you with the curriculum. If you are interested in all of the signs in Spanish, we can make those available to you as well. The beginning-of-year window for BAS is open from September 23rd - October 18th. Be sure to find the highest instructional level and a hard level for each child. All data must be uploaded to the BAS Data Sheet by October 21st. Please sign up for a testing day substitute here. Happy leveling! :)

Some teams have been asking for examples to help them create the best SMART Goal for their students. Please let the Leadership Team know if your team needs any further supports. Evaluators are not assigned to specific teacher just yet. We are hoping to finalize our hire for Lindsey's position this week and we will adjust once that happens.

• Get nurse and cafeteria signature at least 2 weeks in advance. They can sign anywhere at the bottom of your page. 
• Turn in to either main office. 
• Pass out permission slips and have students return. (English p.12, Other Languages)
• The SPC has allotted each grade level $500 to put towards field trips; any questions should be send to treasurer@curleyk8.com.

Shout out to Lourdes Vasquez for being a caring, supportive and hard working Curley employee! Monday is her last day working with us and Tuesday she will start a new chapter of her life retired! We have loved having you work with us and we wish you a long, happy and healthy retirement! Thank you for everything you have done for the students, staff and families at the Curley K-8!

Shout out to all staff for an AMAZING Open House! The turn out was UNBELIEVABLE! Families and students clearly feel connected to our school. Meet Erin Flynn - Leadership Team Coach

Erin Flynn is a Data Inquiry Facilitator for Boston Public Schools. In this role, Erin provides a variety of coaching support for school leaders, ILTs, team facilitators and leadership teams. This year, Erin is directly coaching the Curley Leadership team to help us improve our Observation & Feedback coaching cycles. Erin has been an educator for 17 years. In addition to her role as Data Inquiry Facilitator, Erin was an elementary bilingual/dual language teacher in both Houston and Boston Public schools, where she taught at the Hernandez.

Copy Machine Updates

Please do NOT wirelessly send things to the copy machines, it interrupts when others are copying. Twice in the past week we have had this happen when teachers were copying things on Astro Bright paper (teacher purchased this with their own money) and the paper has been wasted. Please go to the copy machine to make copies only.

The 1000 Cups Coffee Shop

Feeling tired? We are excited to announce that The 1000 Cups Coffee Shop will officially open on Monday, September 23rd! The coffee shop will be stationed across from the Upper School main office this year, except for on Friday’s when it will be stationed in front of our classroom (Upper school room 215). A coffee cost $1. Please only buy a coffee if you have money to pay for it. Some of the students get confused when staff tell them that they’ll pay them back later. The business hours are as follows:

• Tuesday: 9:30-11:00
• Wednesday: 9:30-11:00
• Thursday: 9:30-11:00

This event is part of Safe Routes to School Boston, a city-wide effort to promote walking to school, by rallying neighborhoods and the community as a whole to work toward making walking to school safe, popular, and fun. The Curley Health and Wellness Committee is leading the effort for our school.

Copy Machine Updates

Please do NOT wirelessly sending things to the copy machines as it interrupts when others are copying. Twice in the past week we have had this happen when teachers were copying things on  Astro Bright paper (teacher purchased this with their own money) and the paper has been wasted. Please go to the copy machine to make copies only.

Open House

We have Open House on Thursday, September 26th from 5pm-7pm. All Teachers will be in attendance. Please be sure to have your bulletin board updated with students work. (see info below) A second flier will be sent home this week as well as a robo call to remind families. We will have translators available and more info to come on how to access them. We will also have Family Handbooks copied for your all to give out in many languages. All bulletin boards should have the Curley template posted with it. This is a great project for a student teacher and/or a set of responsible students. It is important that things are stapled up in all corners. Please note that you can share whole group learning (number talk, sample of writing process, response to reading etc....) The work does have to be perfect we prefer authenticity. Bulletin Boards make our hallways feel warm and welcoming and help us celebrate our students.

We will be voting for School Site Council representatives on Thursday, September 26th in both main offices starting at 7am. Staff on the ballot are: Lindsey Wright, Heide Signes, Suzanne Demarco, Kandace Quarterson, Hadley Keohane, Charles Tewksbury and Matthew Tallent. See BTU reps for details.

Fire Drill & Safety Drill

Please review the Staff Handbook in sections 6.28-6.30 (Pages 24-27). We must have one of each of these drills in September. Please practice with your class ASAP.

The 1000 Cups Coffee Shop

Feeling tired? We are excited to announce that The 1000 Cups Coffee Shop will officially open on Monday, September 23rd! The coffee shop will be stationed across from the Upper School main office this year, except for on Friday’s when it will be stationed in front of our classroom (Upper school room 215). A coffee cost $1. Please only buy a coffee if you have money to pay for it. Some of the students get confused when staff tell them that they’ll pay them back later. The business hours are as follows:

• Tuesday: 9:30-11:00
• Wednesday: 9:30-11:00
• Thursday: 9:30-11:00
• Friday: 9:50-10:40 (Upper school hallway outside of room 215)

Open Circle

We wanted to invite all new or returning staff to an Open Circle Snack-N-Chat. On Tuesday October 22nd at 3:30, we will be in the lower school Room 118. If you have questions regarding your kit, bring it with you and if you are new to the building, we can assist you with the curriculum. If you are interested in all of the signs in Spanish, we can make those available to you as well. The beginning-of-year window for BAS is open from September 23rd - October 18th. Be sure to find the highest instructional level and a hard level for each child. All data must be uploaded to the BAS Data Sheet by October 21st. Please sign up for a testing day substitute here. Happy leveling! :)

Goals must be uploaded by October 1, 2019. Teams may use team time this week to work on these.  Attached are some goal examples. Some teams have been asking for examples to help them create the best SMART Goal for their students. Please let the Leadership Team know if your team needs any further supports. Evaluators are not assigned to specific teacher just yet. We are hoping to finalize our hire for Lindsey's position this week and we will adjust once that happens.

• Fill out electronic form at least 2 weeks in advance. This link will be available in the blog daily. Field Trip Request Form
• Print your form submission. 
• Email list of students attending to nurses. 
• Get nurse and cafeteria signature at least 2 weeks in advance. They can sign anywhere at the bottom of your page. 
• Turn in to either main office. 
• Pass out permission slips and have students return. (English p.12, Other Languages)
• The SPC has allotted each grade level $500 to put towards field trips; any questions should be send to treasurer@curleyk8.com.

Sole Train: A Call for Volunteers!

Sole Train is a community-building and mentoring program that "uses running as a vehicle for setting and achieving seemingly impossible goals." In order for our Curley Sole Train program to continue flourishing, we need volunteers! Sole Train practices will be held on Tuesdays from 3:30-4:45 and we'd love to see you there.
