Shout Out

Shout out to Eileen Cronin for securing and organizing materials to support the students in our guided reading groups!

City Year Grades 3-8

City Year would like to introduce you to an SEL initiative that invites students to recognize each other for showing that “Curley Cares.” All students in grades 3-8 are eligible to participate. The initiative asks students, alongside City Year AmeriCorps members, to act as “detectives” on the lookout to catch students around the school caring. A poster with pull-off tabs attached to its bottom will hang in every participating classroom. When students or a City Year see a classmate “caring,” and with teacher approval, they can rip off a tab, write the name and grade of the student who was caught caring, and place the filled-out tab in the manila envelope located next to the poster. Students should use Curley values (i.e. “I care about myself, my classmates, and my school”) to determine whether or not a student should receive a tab. We are asking teachers to introduce the initiative to participating classrooms, grades 3-8, the week of February 26th so students are prepared to start their search for caring classmates by March 5th. Guidelines both for students and teachers could be found here. City Year will collect and count all tabs by March 22nd. Recognized students will be entered into a raffle for various prizes, like a brand new backpack. We will announce raffle prize winners the week of March 26th. ILT

CPT at a Glance

Thanks to the staff who have provided feedback we will have a weekly update about what should be covered at CPT. The CPT at a Glance document will be updated each week. This week is a climate week and your climate representative should have 40 minutes on the agenda. Teams may also continue to reach out to Lindsey Morgan for support with data analysis.

Girls on the Run

This spring we will bring back Girls on the Run at the Curley! The season will begin the week of March 20th. The culminating 5K takes place on June 9th. We need coaches! Practices will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:00 on the playing field. If you want to hear more about the coaching experience, talk to Meg Nason, Jenni Craman, Laura Shea, or Kelly Van Clief who coached our last GOTR team. Contact Meg Nason to join the team this spring.

Middle School Valentine's Dance

The Valentines Dance coming on Feb 16th. The dance will be used to fundraise for buses for Canobie Lake. For the dance, we are asking for your help. Please contact Nina Wessen and Maria Amy-Moreno with questions.

You can help us in the following ways:

• Dance admittance will be $3. Bracelets will be in your mailboxes by the week of Feb 12th. Please collect money and pass out bracelets on Friday, Feb. 16. If you would like, please drop off money and the amount fundraised to Nina in 209 and I can collect and give the money to Katie. 
• We are selling water bottles for $1 to further fundraise for Canobie. WE NEED YOUR HELP TO TELL STUDENTS THAT WATER WILL BE SOLD AT THE DANCE FOR $1. 
• There is a strict rule that students MAY NOT RUN in the gym during the dance. If caught running, students will be asked to leave. (We had a safety issue that occurred at the last dance). 
• We need more active supervisors during the dance. Please actively supervise and monitor the students during this time. We want to ensure the safety of our students and of the equipments. 
• Lastly, we will pass out music forms to all teachers on Monday. Please take the time to pass out these forms to your students and have them write in 1-2 appropriate songs that they would like to hear at the dance. We will not necessarily play every single song, but we will attempt to do so if the song is appropriate.

The City of Boston, BPS, and the BTU invite our stakeholders to nominate exceptional educators and to honor their work and dedication through the 2018 Boston Educator of the Year Award. K2, 1st and 2nd Grade

The middle of the year testing window is open from January 22nd to March 2nd. If you have running records that show a student is reading on or above your grade's instructional level benchmark, you do not need to do the BAS with them. If a student is reading below the instructional level benchmark, you need to do the BAS to find the highest instructional level and their hard level.
The levels are as follows:
K2 - on or above instructional C
1st grade - on or above instructional G
2nd grade - on or above instructional L

Shout Out

Shout out to Ms. Mundo for also opening up here room for the Instructional Focus Review Walkthrough. Ms. Mundo wasn't originally on the schedule but the Umana school wanted to see our students with limited and/or interrupted formal education. Thank you again Ms. Mundo for adding to the learning of not only Curley but other schools as well.

Shout out to Liz Spring, Cassie Mountain, Kristin Clark, Tristan Maiden, Kandi Quarterson, Joanne Mylett, Lindsey Wright, Debbie Bryson, Kiki Iatrou, Lesley Peck-Oser, and Dawn Avery for all their hard work on the MCAS alts. This group has shown care for our school and students by doing the meticulous work that goes into preparing MCAS alts.

Shout out to Alison Lozano, Elaine Cronin, and Maryclare Moran for helping out in a difficult situation today. Thank you for not waiting for the admin team and jumping straight to action!

Shout out to Ms. Mountain and Ms. Clark for being flexible and going out of their way to support a student from another class on short notice. The effort was very much appreciated.

This will be my final blog post and I would like to give Katie Grassa a big shout out for all the great work that she has done at the Curley and for being an amazing mentor this year. I have truly benefited from watching her leadership this year.

MCAS Update

We wanted to send you some MCAS information in advance of next week. As an admin team we have tried to think about how to best simplify this process for all teachers and in turn reduce stress for both staff and students. Attached are two documents for your reference. Teams should review these this week and pay close attention to student groupings since there have been updates.

Nurse Passes

Please give students passes to the nurse. We have seen a lot of students coming to the nurse without a pass. The pass serves as a way to keep students accountable and let other staff in the building know students are where they are suppose to be. Thank you. 

Front Door

Please do not let students in before 8:15 unless it is very cold, raining, or you are willing to stay in the front lobby with them. Students can not be left in the building unsupervised because this creates a safety issue. Thank you. 

Artifacts

Artifacts are due May 15th. Please reread over your formative evaluation. If your evaluator has indicated that you are missing an artifact please add that artifact and update any data that is connected to your goals.

MCAS Coverage

Every effort will be made to make sure all staff get their P&D time but if you are called on to help cover during your P&D time keep a record of it and you will be compensated for that time. Forms will be out in June to fill in time to be compensated.

Tech Goes Home @ the Curley!

The families of students in grades 2-8 will have the opportunity to attend a Tech Goes Home course right here at the Curley. Technology Goes Home (TGH) strives to ensure that all residents of the City of Boston are equipped with the tools, training, and access to support 21st century skill development. After successful completion of the program, graduates will have purchased their very own Lenovo Chromebook computer for $50.

Street Cleaning

Substitute Teacher Folders

Please make sure that your sub folders are up to date and have explicit instructions about what duties they have to cover and what procedures they should be following. There have been miscommunications with substitutes where duties have not been covered and students have been unsupervised. This has created safety issues. 

City Year

The MCAS is drawing nearer every day. To help keep students motivated and in school during this time City Year is hosting a school wide Spirit Week. I am attaching the flyers we're distributing in English and Spanish, each classroom will have a copy of both by tomorrow, and many will have them today. We are encouraging teachers and staff to participate as well to help keep morale high!

The themes for the week will be as follows:

Friday: Grade level color day (Each grade and their grade buddies will be assigned a color to share)
8th and 3rd grades: Purple

7th and 2nd grades: Blue

6th and 1st grades: Green

5th and K2 grades: Red

4th and K1 grades: Pink

Computer Science Bus Route Efficiency Challenge

There is a computer science challenge event open to the public at District Hall in the Seaport District on Saturday, April 1st at 10:30am (registration and breakfast starting at 10am). We believe that some of our tech-minded students and staff may be interested in attending (please encourage them to RSVP here!). This event is the start of our first-ever Transportation Challenge -- which you can learn more about on our website -- that has two goals:
Use computer science to improve our bus stop placement and bus routing (solving a variation of the traveling salesman problem).

Using our more automated routes and community preferences, help us equitably and efficiently balance our school start times.

This event has attracted a wide range of professional computer scientists (FedEx, Uber, Microsoft, and others), academic researchers from local universities (Harvard, MIT, Boston University, and others), and various college and graduate students. We believe that a particularly precocious BPS student may be able to solve the problem so encourage them to participate, and that this event may provide tangible examples of computer science in action.

We Take Care of Each Other... Submit Staff Curley Cares Awards
During next week's whole-school PD (Thursday, March 30​ from 3:00-4:15), staff members will once again have the opportunity to recognize their colleagues by giving Curley Cares awards. This is your chance to acknowledge deeds (both big and small) that have made a difference in your work life. So take some time to consider the contributions of the people you work with each day and how their actions support the Curley K-8 "We Care..." philosophy. Chose one person who you would like to recognize and share your appreciation by filling out the Curley Shares Staff Award form. If you have any problems accessing the form, please contact Kate Davis or Laura Shea.

DOE is requiring all schools to test in the following sequence: ELA, Math, and Science. As a result, testing dates have been adjusted. Please print and save this calendar. We Care About Our Community!

The Curley Community is excited to announce that we are launching a Community Caring Project this spring.  We will kick off the project by hosting a school-wide Caring March on April 12th at 1:30pm.  All staff and students will participate and families will be invited to march with us.

Many of our students have participated in marches for various causes over the past few months and there have been discussions in many classrooms about the rights of different groups of people in our community.  There is some inspiring work already happening at the Curley.  Ms. Strait’s 4th grade class is doing a Hunger Project, Ms. Mylett and Ms. Moran’s class is spreading kindness by making kindness rocks, and Ms. Merdkhanian’s K1 class had their own march after several students attended the Women’s March in February.

We would like for all classes to gather with their buddy classrooms to collaborate on this project. Students should think about what they care about, and work with their buddies to create signs and posters for the Caring March.  There are lots of things that we care about in our community.  The possibilities are endless!  

Here are some things that students may care about and want to put on signs:

• Animal rights
• Illnesses 
• Hunger
• Access to school
• The environment
• Immigrant rights
• LGBQ rights

Timeline for the Curley Community Caring Project

• March: prepare for the Caring March by talking to your students about what they care about and creating signs and posters with your buddy class
• April: March with your buddy class on April 12th at 1:30.  
• May and June: Create and complete a community service project.  Ideas, lesson plans, resources and support will be provided.

Field Trips

Are you going on a field trip soon? Have you shared this information with the nurses and the cafeteria? This is a friendly reminder that the nurse's and cafe should be notified 2 weeks in advance of scheduled field trips. Teachers should also be carefully checking the returned permission slips. They should notify the nurse's office when a parent checks the "yes" box stating that their child requires medication while on the field trip.

Using ESS

If you wish to request a day off (medical appointments, religious holidays, professional day, bereavement, personal day etc...), sign on to Boston Employees Self Service (ESS, Please bookmark this page). When possible, request a personal day at least two weeks in advance. Staff members will request sub coverage through SubCentral (https://subcentral.bostonpublicschools.org/logOnInitAction.do). Please do not decide whether you think a sub is needed and submit the request as soon as you know a day you will be absent. We have many unexpected coverage needs that might need sub help. We are attaching a list of subs who usually work at the Curley upon request.

Sick Day Procedure (teachers and paraprofessionals)

Instructional Focus Walkthrough Today

We will have representatives from BPS join us for a walkthrough of classrooms and look for evidence of our Instructional Focus "Teachers will vary demands and resources, to optimize challenge, so students can express a clear, organized idea." Please be sure that student teachers are in a support role and the primary teachers are teaching. Please also make sure all doors are unlocked. Classes need be available for visitors between 9am-11am. Visitors may enter any classroom during this window. Thank you.

Silent Auction Today!

The Curley School Parent Council (SPC) will be hosting their 10th Annual Silent Auction at Canary Square on Tuesday, March 28th from 6pm-9pm and would like to extend an invite to all staff, friends and families. The money raised from the Silent Auction goes to directly supporting our school such as Playworks, BalletROX, Arts supplies, science supplies, staff luncheon, Chromebooks etc... Message From the Nurse's Office

Spring usually means an increase in field trips. With that in mind we ask that you watch this short video as a fresher on how to use an epipen. It is less then two minutes long. As a reminder, if you are going on a field trip or leaving the building with students it is important to check in with the nurses well in advance. Some students have medication that must travel with them and some students have medical conditions that may need monitoring or special consideration when they are out of the building. Please review permission slips carefully. There is a section in which parents are supposed to check off whether or not their child requires medication on a field trip. Also, please be aware if you have student's in your class who have Life Threatening Allergies. They are supposed to be listed on SIS but we have found that they are not always listed properly. Feel free to email or stop into the nurse's office if you are not sure about allergies in your class. There are emergency epipens in both offices. The epipens in the yellow box are for adults and older children. The ones in green boxes are for smaller children (usually 1st grade and under).

Field Trips

Are you going on a field trip soon? Have you shared this information with the nurses and the cafeteria? This is a friendly reminder that the nurse's and cafe should be notified 2 weeks in advance of scheduled field trips. Teachers should also be carefully checking the returned permission slips. They should notify the nurse's office when a parent checks the "yes" box stating that their child requires medication while on the field trip.

Using ESS

If you wish to request a day off (medical appointments, religious holidays, professional day, bereavement, personal day etc...), sign on to Boston Employees Self Service (ESS, Please bookmark this page). When possible, request a personal day at least two weeks in advance. Staff members will request sub coverage through SubCentral (https://subcentral.bostonpublicschools.org/logOnInitAction.do). Please do not decide whether you think a sub is needed and submit the request as soon as you know a day you will be absent. We have many unexpected coverage needs that might need sub help. We are attaching a list of subs who usually work at the Curley upon request.

Sick Day Procedure (teachers and paraprofessionals)

Bulletin Boards

Please make sure that all bulletin boards are covered in paper tomorrow. We want to the space to look bright and welcoming for the first day of school. This a great task for your student teacher, City Year Corps Member or paraprofessional as you work to set up your classroom space. There is paper for boards located in the Teacher's Room 110 (Upper School).

Note from our Nurses

Hi, Hope you all had a great summer. BPS Health services require that all staff must complete two training modules.

1. Blood Bourne Pathogens (slide show and test)

2. Epipen (training module and staff quiz)

This email contains the link for the staff Epipen Training and a short quiz. All staff should click on this link and first complete the "School Staff Training Module" on the left. After you have completed the training module please click on the "School Staff Quiz" link on the right. Once you have completed the quiz please print out your certificate and bring it to the nurse's office. You will be "signed off" once you have the certificate and participate in a brief Epipen demonstration in our office. We ask that all staff have this completed within the first two weeks of school. We have many student's here at the Curley with life threatening allergies. It is important that they are safe in school. 

There is also a link for the Blood Borne Pathogen Slide Show and another for the Blood Borne Pathogen Test. Please view the slide show. Once you have completed the slide show, print out the test, complete it and return it to the nurse's office with your epipen certificate. 

Also, it is very important that the nurses receive a copy of emergency forms as soon as they come in. Often these emergency forms are how we become aware that a student has a certain medical condition that needs attention. All medications and medical forms should be sent to the nurse's office. It is against HIPAA Privacy Policies for medical information to be left in classrooms.  Please feel free to stop by the nurse's office across from the lower school gym if you have any questions or concerns.

Red Jacket Weekend & Family Field Day

City Year will kick off their program year by hosting a day of service at the Curley K-8 School on Saturday, September 17th. If you are interested in signing up for service work please click here to register for the day of service. When prompted, please write "Curley parent"/"Curley staff"/etc  in the "other" space in the City Year Affiliation section so that we can track how many sign ups we have from the school. We just ask that students are accompanied by a parent/guardian or are chaperoned by a Curley staff member.

Join us for a family field day with City Year Boston on Saturday, September 17th from 1-4 PM! Activities will include face painting, games, a food demonstration by Fresh Truck, and more. All ages are welcome to attend, but children under 18 should be accompanied by an adult. Click here to register for the Field Day event.

Kindergarten Potluck Picnic

All Kindergarten (K0, K1 & K2) are welcome to join us on Wednesday, September 7th for a potluck picnic. From 3-4pm teachers will be in their classrooms to welcome families and show your child his or her new learning space. From 4-6pm there will be a potluck picnic outside by the play structures for all families.

Summer Reading Challenge

We sent a reminder to students about bringing the appropriate Summer Reading Challenge materials on day one. Please be sure to let Caitlyn Gable and Eileen Cronin know who in your class completed the challenge so we can recognize his or her efforts.

Staff Handbook

The Curley Staff Handbook will be used as part of professional development tomorrow. All teachers are expected to read this handbook and use as a reference for important information throughout this school year. The assessment portion is incomplete due to district and state pending decisions regarding testing. Staff will be notified and the handbook will be updated once the information becomes available to schools.

CASP

Torri Canada, the Director of the Curley Before and After School Program (CASP) would like to share the following information with you. CASP Before and After School begins the first day of school, Thursday, September 8th. Before school begin at 7:00am. A CASP before school application must be on file on the first day of school for a child to attend.  Students attending CASP after school on the first day must have an application on file by noon. Curley Faculty Senate

On Tuesday, March 15 at 7:30am in the Upper School Teachers' Lounge there will be a Faulty Senate Meeting.  We will talk about Union issues and school issues. The Faulty Senate Meeting will be a pot lock breakfast.

Curley Lion Dance and Kung Fu Team

The Curley Lion Dance and Kung Fu team will be starting practice on Wednesdays 2:45 at the Pershing Road School Yard. The class will be pay by donation. The class is geared toward older children but everyone willing to follow along is welcome to do so. We will cover some basic meditation, stances for strengthening and flexibility, Kung Fu moves for self defense, Lion Dance, drumming, Tai Chi exercises for rest, relaxation and health, and we will also sing a Kung Fu song for the purpose of group dynamics and self affirmation. The short term goal is to perform in the Wake Up the Earth Parade and to foster teamwork through practicing together and doing that parade together. The Long term goal is participate in performances as a stand alone team, as well as with other teams throughout Boston. The even longer term goal is for students from this class to teach the younger children at the Curley what they have learned, and perhaps to teach other schools in the area as well. Student ID Numbers

As part of the corrective action plan of the DESE Administrative Review, the district is required to provide documentation of student identification to ensure accurate accountability of each meal served. Students are required to learn their six digit BPS ID number. We are are working with the cafeteria staff to ensure a smooth implementation of this mandate. Thus, before your students go to lunch tomorrow:

• Please write your students ID numbers in a card or sticky note
• In the next few days, help them memorize their ID numbers 
• Please send and pick up your students on time to ensure that the cafeteria workers have time to input the student numbers in the system 

Eventually, students will be given a card with a bar code to swipe or enter their information on a pin pad after they get their food. Thank you for you for cooperation see Mr. Diaz if you have any questions.

Hiring

As of 3/1/16 our positions were posted online at www.teachboston.org. We need your help in this hiring process and we want you to be on our committees. Here is the schedule, please check this schedule for interviews in the coming weeks and place your name on the spreadsheet to help interview. Thanks! Also this weekend we found out that we will have an additional K1 added to our school for next year as well. This job will be posted in the coming weeks.

Movie Night

On Wednesday, Mar. 16th PACE will hold a fundraiser. It is a family movie night from 5-7pm in the Upper School Auditorium. Tickets are $3 and will be sold at the door on the Centre Street entrance. All ages are welcome as long as children are accompanied by an adult and the ticket price will include water and popcorn. Our Hint about the Movie is... When I'm feeling happy, angry, scared, or sad I can watch this Oscar winning animated feature film and it is sure to make me feel glad.

Adult Dance Class

Ms. Taylor has agreed to let us use her room on Tuesdays from 2:45 to 3:30 to dance for fun. She will be running the warm up/cool down part of it. I see this as a way of relaxing, exercising and having fun for the staff. More details to come. First dance for fun will be Tuesday, March 15th at 2:45.

On a Saturday in September, around 750 volunteers from the City Year community will be coming out to the Curley and the surrounding community for a day of volunteering that will be organized by a specialized team from City Year. Projects for this type of event can include painting, murals, organization, landscaping, light construction and the creation of resources for students and teachers.   Your input and feedback is essential for us to best align our projects with the needs of the school and we greatly appreciate you for taking the time to answer the questions using this link. The Curley School Parent Council (SPC) will be hosting their Annual Silent Auction at Canary Square on Tuesday, March 29th and would like to extend an invite to all staff and their friends and family. In the past some staff have donated an afternoon with their teacher to get an ice cream at JP Licks, Principal for the Day, lunch with your teacher, etc... The SPC is open to any of your ideas and really appreciates your time (and the students love the prizes). Environmental Walk Thru

Curley Basketball

Our basketball season will begin this week with home games on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. The girls will play at 3:30pm and the boys will play at 4:30pm. Go Flying Lions!

Uniform Survey

Our yearly uniform surveys will go home with students tomorrow in both Spanish and English. We are asking staff to collect these forms and encourage students to return them. Teach Plus Courses

Teach Plus courses are returning this spring and we strongly encourage staff to participate. The courses being offered at the Curley specifically focus on areas we are discussing with the ILT and align with our school goals and the Instructional Focus (Teachers will vary demands and resources to optimize challenge in writing task to support students in expressing a clear, organized idea). Curley staff will be given preference for seats in courses offered at our school and we hope you take advantage of this benefit - either individually or as a team. Chelsea Clinton

We are excited to announce that this Wednesday October 21st, Chelsea Clinton will be visiting the Curley K-8 school. Clinton is the daughter of Bill Clinton (42nd President of the United States) and Hillary Clinton (former US Secretary of State and current Democratic Presidential Candidate), and is in Boston to share her new book, It’s Your World: Get Informed, Get Inspired & Get Going. In the book, aimed at young readers ages 10-14, Clinton breaks down some of the world’s biggest challenges and shares inspiring stories of young people who are already making an impact in their own communities and around the globe. 

IT’S YOUR WORLD: Get Informed, Get Inspired & Get Going! 

Clinton will be meeting with middle school students at the Curley K-8 School to complete projects that will benefit the entire school community as well as ​residents of Boston. In addition to painting murals to beautify our school with inspirational phrases and pictures, students will create academic resource kits for their lower-school peers. Win

The “soft launch” of the WIN block for students in grades 3-8 over the past two weeks has given grade level teams the opportunity to work out logistics and student assignments.  Once ANET testing is completed this week, we move into our next phase of WIN implementation, beginning October 26th, during which specific program instruction is expected to begin, if it hasn’t already. Rosters of students, by WIN placement, will be distributed this week for grade level teams to review and confirm, so that our WIN data spreadsheet is accurate and reflects current students’ assignments. Please take time during your grade team meetings to quickly review these rosters as well as confirm plans for moving students to their appropriate WIN rooms. Also, as standard operating procedure, all students should come to their WIN room with a pencil and an independent reading book, just in case technology is not working, or if substitutes are covering the period.Again, thank you for your continued hard work to assure that all Curley 3-8 students receive “what is needed” to be successful readers!

Movie Night Fundraiser for PACE

PACE will be holding a Family Movie Night Fundraiser on Tuesday, November 10th from 5-7pm (There is no school the next day). This event will help raise money for field trips which provide very important social and community experience for students on the Autism Spectrum. Tickets will be $3 a person and will include the movie ticket, popcorn and water. The movie will be Big Hero Six rated PG and all students must be accompanied by an adult. Staff is welcome to stay and help support PACE either by enjoying the movie, helping to supervisor or run concessions.
