Shout Out
Shout out to two of our 8th grade boys Derron Crawford and Javon Franklin. Both boys play football for the Boston Raiders and are considered leaders on the team. They are also the star Quarterback and Wide Receiver and led their team to a win this past weekend. Both Derron and Javon are motivated by sports and plan to play football in high school next year! If you see these boys tomorrow please congratulate them!
Summer Reading
Plans are now finalized to recognize students who have completed summer reading. Students whose names were submitted to Caitlyn or Eileen will be recognized as follows:
- Bulletin Boards. Bulletin boards, recognizing “Reader Leaders,” will be established on the first floor hallway of the upper school and the runway between the upper and lower school. Reader leaders will have their pictures displayed, along with a brief comment about their favorite summer read. Forms will be distributed to teachers this week. We ask that student readers take a few minutes to complete the form and return to either Caitlyn or Eileen. Amika will take pictures of students during lunch periods beginning on Tuesday, September 22nd. Caitlyn and Eileen will help coordinate this activity during lunch periods.
- Awards. Certificates of Achievement, along with a “Curley Reader Leader” bracelet, will be given each reader leader during the next Curley Assembly.

3rd-8th Grade
City Year Corp members will be conducting Hand Raising Tally surveys about transportation on Sept 23rd and 24th. Corps members will ask students in their homeroom to raise their hands to indicate how they travel to and from school and record class responses on the Hand Tally Sheet. It will take about 5 minutes.
All Hands on Deck!
We’re approaching the home stretch of student assessments in preparation for the launch of Curley’s WIN block for students in grades 3-8, beginning in October. All DAZE/MAZE testing is now completed -thank you!
This week we begin the process of additional testing (WIST) for students who fall below the grade level benchmarks. To complete this work in as timely a manner as possible, I’ve asked all Resource Room teachers to lend classroom/homeroom teachers a hand to accomplish this task. Below is a schedule of Resource Room teachers’ availability. Remember, the Spelling subtest of WIST can be administered to the whole class in three or four sessions. The Word Identification subtest requires one-on-one administration, and that’s where additional staffing could be helpful.
We are asking teachers responsible for testing to please reach out to the Resource Room teacher working with your grade level team for help administering the WIST. City Year Corps members can also help test, provided that they are supervised while working with students. Finally, student teachers and interns can also provide additional testing support.
Extended Learning Time (ELT), Joint Task Force
BPS and BTU have each appointed members to the ELT Joint Task Force. The Joint Task Force members are:

The ELT Joint Task Force is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the ELT Memorandum of Agreement and its members serve as stakeholder representatives for our Schedule A ELT school communities. We are looking forward to a productive year supporting Cohort 1 and planning with Cohort 2! (It is likely we will be a Cohort 2 school.)
SST Update
This year SST will be held twice a month on Thursdays. The google doc sign up with meeting dates as well as the referral forms can be found in the google drive under Student Support Team. The following protocol should be used when signing up to present a student at SST. Please remember that any teacher working with a student in grades k-8 can present at SST.
- Teachers should sign up for 1 time slot using the Google document titled “SST Sign Up”.
- Teachers can present up to 2 students (though 1 is preferred) during one SST time slot
- Teachers must complete and upload the “SST Referral Form” for each student at least 1 week prior to presenting. This will ensure that appropriate staff members can be in attendance.
Please follow the steps below when completing the “SST Referral Form:”
- Download the form
- Use “Save As” to save the document and rename it using the student’s first initial and last name as the title (Ex. “J.Smith)
- Complete the Referral Form
- Upload the completed form to the “Completed SST Referral Form” folder
Curley Cares - Bulletin Boards
All bulletin board displays must be up by October 1st for Open House. Your display should reflect on the question "How are you and your students are building a caring community in your classroom?"
All displays must have a title and a description of the learning experience. Please use
this template and hang it in the lower right hand corner of your bulletin board. Resources are available for you in the teachers’ room. There are several rolls of colored bulletin board paper. Please be mindful and take only what you need. This is all the paper that we have for the year, so please use it only for bulletin boards. There is also a color printer if you are inspired to add photos to your display as well as other tools such as a paper cutter, glue sticks, scissors, etc. We have located the laminator and ordered film. Chromebook Carts
Three new Chromebook carts arrived today! We are working on inventorying them and getting them out to teams. It is important that all teachers participate in the training with Connie Redden to assure use. Connie is willing to offer trainings on Wednesdays at 3pm. The training takes about 15 minutes or less and involves sharing how to teach students to handle, remove and return laptops to the cart. Participants also will receive a copy of the paperwork required to be on file for staff as well as students, (BPS Acceptable Use Policy - Teachers), (Student Contract with # of the computer assigned to the student, and the Acceptable Use Policy as part of the Parent Student Agreement. Both are requirements for students).We are going to be taking ANet and PARCC online this year so we want to make sure that the carts are being used regularly by students.
TAP
CHNP-TAP is a new program that offers professional development and consultation services to support schools in addressing students’ social, emotional, and behavioral health needs. It is based on a two-year partnership between CHNP-TAP and the Curley K-8. As a part of understanding how to best meet our school’s needs, we are requesting that all school staff complete a survey that includes a number of items specific to the behavioral health needs of students. The survey results will only be shared with the school in the aggregate and individual responses will not be shared. The survey will take 7-10 minutes to complete. The survey link is:
