6/18/19 Daily Bulletin

Shout Outs

Thank you to the Curley K-8 Community for your kindness and generosity at our surprise bridal shower this morning! It was so absolutely heartwarming to receive all that love and support from our colleagues as we look towards an exciting new chapter in our lives. Love, Meron, Laura, and Melanie

Shout out to all the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade teachers who took students on the field trip to Canobie Lake! Also shout out to Ms. Beaudrault and Ms. Boyd who took in the 6th graders not going on the trip, thanks for making the students feel welcome!

Shout out to Maureen Cullen, John DePalm, Elaine Cronin, and Mark Righini for helping set up/plan/run field day! 

Early Release Schedule

Students will dismiss at 1pm on Tuesday, June 18th and Wednesday, June 19th. A reminder call will go to families but please remind any families you communicate with between now and then. Also there is NO CASP or after school program on those early release days so please make sure you know how students will be getting home. Here is the schedule for those two days.

Teacher Schedule

Tuesday and Wednesday are still full paid days for staff (teachers and paras). Teachers should be available until 3:25pm (Paras until 3:10pm). Don't forget to submit your Check-Out Checklist to the designated administrator as well as your keys!
If you need to finish up any packing/tasks, the building will be open on Thursday 6/20 and Friday 6/21.
 

Report Cards for Students with ELD Levels

Please make a copy of the report card for all students with an ELD level and place them in Sara Silverstein's box in the lower school office.

Top Ten Highlights of SY 2018-2019

There are so many moments to celebrate from school year 2018-2019. Here are the Top Ten highlights:

10. Kicking off our school year with lots of new 21st Century Furniture. This offered students alternative seating as well as easier access to group learning.

9. Our early childhood team collaborating and prepping for NAEYC Re-accreditation. We earned this accreditation at the start of the school year thanks to the collaborative efforts of the team.

8. We re-opened the school library for our community! Students now have more access to diverse texts and a space to enjoy and learn in.

7. The reset of tier 1 curriculum in middle school ELA, science as well as SFL training across grades 4-8. This will lead to greater consistency and vertical alignment across the school.

6. Increased inclusion opportunities for our students in substantially separate classrooms. Which has led to cross-program adult collaboration as well students learning collaboratively and supporting one another.

5. Curley T-Shirts were given out to every student. It is great to see them representing our community at shares, on field trips or just any day at school.

4. Hosting our first Acceleration Academy for middle school students in math. Students were willing to come to school for 4 extra days to learn math and improve their skills.

3. Robust arts displays and performances that represented the diverse cultures that make up our community!

2. Data cycles happening across this school! We are systematizing how we look at data to support our students in achieving and the early data we have says this plan is working! And then being able to mirror this after becoming a CBHM school and also using SEL data within these cycles as well.

The number 1 highlight from SY 2018-2019 was our school marching in the PRIDE PARADE. Our community showed how much we CARE by developing student leaders, creating t-shirts and welcoming all to our community! Thank you all for a great school year! 

Summer Reading Packets Distribution!

Summer reading packets were distributed to most K-7 classrooms on 6/12/19, with a few classrooms scheduled for delivery tomorrow. We suggest that teachers take a few minutes to review the packet contents and have students sign the "Summer Reading Pledge" prior to sending the summer reading information home. Thanks in advance for helping our students continue to grow as readers over the summer months. Please contact Eileen Cronin (Gr. 3-7) or Caitlyn Gable (K-2) if you need additional packets or have any questions.

Required Sickle Cell Disease Webinar for Teachers

Due 6/19/2019 Health Services has created a webinar about sickle cell disease policy/student supports. The webinar was sent via email to teachers June 7. Spring Grading Window K-8

The Spring term grading window for students in grades K0-8 is open from June 3 to June 16. Please refer to the materials below for instructions on entering grades.

Movies in School & Outdoor Play

June has arrived but there is a lot of learning time that remains. Movies and additional outdoor play should not replace classroom instruction. There are two ways movies/additional outdoor play can be used effectively during instructional time:
1) it is a video on the content and learning standards being studied for that grade level
2) over the course of multiple days students earned this opportunity

OUTDOOR PLAY during the hours of 10:00am-1pm is not allowed due to recess and 9:20-9:50 the play structures are used by the ABA team. This means PE and other activities cannot be on the field and play structures during this time. It is unsafe to have too many kids outside at the same time.

CPT Cycle May 6th - June 19th

As we close out the school year we want to map out the remaining weeks of CPT for teacher teams. Please check the Curley Work Plan Calendar for all your links to meetings and documents.

ANNOUNCING International Week Dates for SY 2019-20!

Based on data from the 2018 International Committee Feedback survey, International Week for the upcoming school year has been scheduled for the week of December 2-6, 2019. The expectation is that all 56 homerooms will participate in this cultural exchange, sharing what they learn with their buddy classes. As you make plans for next year, we encourage you to start thinking about a country to study and how it might connect to your curriculum

Detention

Students in Middle School should be submitted on the Google Form for Detention if they are tardy without a pass, missing from class, or in the hallway without a pass. Adults should ask to see the pass to make sure it has the accurate date and time. Any adults in the building can assign detention if they find students in the hallway without a pass. Please see Ms. Jackson if you have further questions.

Field Trip Request Procedure

All field trips requests should be submitted in the following way, check out this powerpoint for additional information on the steps.
  • Fill out electronic form at least 2 weeks in advance. This link will be available in the blog daily. Field Trip Request Form
  • Print your form submission. 
  • Email list of students attending to nurses. 
  • Get nurse and cafeteria signature at least 2 weeks in advance. They can sign anywhere at the bottom of your page. 
  • Turn in to either main office. 
  • Pass out permission slips and have students return. (English p.12, Other Languages)
  • The SPC has allotted each grade level $500 to put towards field trips; any questions should be send to treasurer@curleyk8.com.

Shout Outs

Shout out to Tenacity for hosting a packed End of Year Ceremony! Families were thrilled to come out and support their student!
 



Shout out to our newly elected BTU Reps: Connie Redden, Joanne Mylett, Suzanne Demarco, CasSandra Samuel, Mary Thomas, and Matthew Tallent. Thank you for representing our school in this leadership role!

Shout out to our 8th graders who are moving on to high school! It was a beautiful ceremony that was student led and filled with student performances! We wish you all the success in high school and beyond! A special thank you to Craig Melzer and Maria Amy-Moreno for all their efforts in planning this ceremony!

Shout out to all staff hosting moving on ceremonies this past week! Thanks to Grade 8, Grade 5, K2 and K1! It was great to have so many families present to celebrate this week!

Shout out to Amy Lieberman and Rachel Harris for organizing a Grade 6/SEI camping trip! The students had a blast in New Hampshire this past week! Thank you!
 

 

 



Shout out to our fabulous Applied Behavior Specialist Pair: Liz Spring and Cassie Mountain. They gave a thorough, full course of Safety Care Training Thursday and Friday. Cassie, thanks for being so professional and endearing right to the end of your Curley tenure. Liz and Cassie are such pros at this newer training and terrific sports as we mishandled them at times. They were both patient and precise as they tried to get us to approach perfection on the hands-on portions of our Safety Care training. Hurrah, Ladies!

Field Day K2-grade 4

Field Day in K2-4th grade will take place on Monday, June 17th. This mean there will be NO OUTDOOR RECESS or OUTDOOR USE on this day. Field Day will be taking up the whole outdoor space for the entire day. Please see Ms. Cullen, Mr. R or Mr. DePalm with questions. Attached is the Field Day Schedule.  K2-4 Field Day is Monday! Tattoos/face paint will be given to one teacher per grade in the morning to share. Please return extras at the end of the day. The updated game list is on the drive (game titles have changed NOT times or starting #s). The Hoodsie truck will be in the lower school playground from 12-2. Please come ONLY at your scheduled time as it is being used in the morning for K2 games.

11/28/17 Daily Bulletin

Shout Out

Shout out to all Curley Staff, Students and Families! Today we mailed a check to Mitchell Elementary School in Houston, TX for $1, 042.50. I spoke with the principal today and she was overwhelmed by our generosity and how much we have done for students and families in both Houston and Puerto Rico! Kudos to you all!

Shout out to the Curley K-8 for making the newspaper on page 13 of the JP Gazette! A special thanks for Amika for being our leader for the week and connecting us with the Gazette!


Curley Cares - Staff Awards

During this week's whole-school PD on Thursday, November 30, 2017 staff members will once again have the opportunity to recognize their colleagues by giving them a Curley Cares award.
  • This is your chance to acknowledge deed s (both big and small) that have made a difference in your work life. So take some time to consider the contributions of the people you work with each day and how their actions support the Curley K-8 "We Care..." philosophy. 
  • Chose one person who you would like to recognize and share your appreciation by filling out the Curley Shares Staff Award form. If you have any problems accessing the form, please contact Kate Davis. 
  • Submissions are due by 7:00pm Wednesday, November 29, 2017.

Preference Sheet


We are beginning the planning process for SY 2018-19 and would like to take into consideration teacher preferences for next year. We are sending these out earlier than the schedule required by the contract so that we can better prepare for the budget process and for meeting the needs of our students for next year. We anticipate that the Curley will have the same grade configuration as this year, with the exception of one additional homeroom in Grade 6. Please fill out the attached form to indicate your preferences for SY 2018-19. Please complete by Friday, December 8, 2017.

Harvard Visit

On Wednesday, November 29th we will welcome a team from the Harvard Graduate School of Education School Leadership Program. One of our visitors, Dr. Mary Grassa O'Neill, is the Director of the School Leadership Program and is also my Aunt. I am honored to have her come see the amazing work we have been doing as a community for the last five school years! We will be walking through classrooms in the morning.

Staff Social

Our December Staff Social will take place on Friday, December 1st at Costello's on Centre Street from 3:45pm-6pm. All staff are welcome to attend and mingle!

Middle School Dance


Our first middle school dance in the gym will be held this coming Friday, December 1 starting at 1:50 PM and ending at 2:55 PM. Please reach out to Maria Amy-Moreno for further details.

Artifacts

Please be sure to upload your artifacts on EDFS by Friday, December 15th. You should upload 1-2 artifacts for each goal (two goals) AND each standard (four standards) for a total of 6-12 artifacts. Be sure to upload the data to support your progress with your Student Learning Goal.


Professional Development For Teachers

We will have our 2nd afternoon PD session on Thursday, November 30th from 3:45pm-5:45pm. This is for all teachers. It is the 5th week of the month so there are no leadership team meetings on Wednesday. There will be various sessions taking place:

Bulletin Boards Updated by Friday, December 1st

Bulletin boards communicate the values of our school. Bulletin boards are a window into our classrooms that allow us to share the teaching and learning happening inside. Bulletin boards send a message to students that their work is important and valued here. Please update your bulletin board by Friday, December 1st. You must also include the Curley template which describes the learning your students are doing that links to the instructional focus.

Spring 2017 MCAS Data 

On Monday you will receive MCAS data for your students from Spring 2017 as well as envelopes. Please send this home to families by Tuesday at the latest.

Curley Cares Gift Drive

We would like to run a gift drive here at the Curley for the month of December. Please let Kristen Mitchell, know if you are interested in helping to organize this year's gift drive. Please email her at KMitchell@bostonpublicschools.org.

Secret Snowflake

The climate team is running a secret snowflake event. This is a great way to spread cheer around the Curley. Don't worry if you don't know many people outside of your grade level team. We have a Snow Flake Interest Google Form you to fill out. Everyone who fills out the form will be entered into a name drawing. You will then collect your snow man's interest sheet and start planning goodies and surprises for them. For more information please look here.

Fall Term Report Card Grading Window for Grades 1 - 8

The fall grading window for students in grades 1-8 is will open from November 20th to December 10th. Please refer to the materials below for instructions on entering grades.
Reminder: After entering or editing grades in the scores tab, teachers must click Post Grades to write the grades to the report cards. Grades will be saved as you enter them but they will not appear on the report cards until you click Post Grades. (Note: Online it will say Grades 1-5 because we changes to that grading schedule)

Health and Wellness

The Health and Wellness committee will be performing an environmental audit on Dec 11 (7:30-10am) at the school library. The purpose of the audit is to look for areas in which is in need of environmental and health improvements at the school. To help with the audit, please complete the survey. This will help the committee narrow down specific areas to focus in on during the audit. Please complete the survey by Dec 5th and your name will be entered to win a special Dunkin Donuts treat!

The Health and Wellness Committee will email the results of the survey, the audit, and suggestions for improvements as soon as both are complete. If you would like to be apart of the Environmental Audit of our school please sign up via Al Vega at al.vega@masscosh.org or Nina Wessen at nly@bostonpublicschools.org.


Special Education Progress Reports

1. K0/K1 and K2 do not have to complete progress reports this round. This is due to the fact that they do not receive report cards in December.

The books belong to the school however staff may put their names in them and highlight/take notes in the text.

11/27/17 Daily Bulletin

Shout Out

Shout out to the middle school staff for hosting a Thanksgiving feast for the 2nd floor. Students and families made delicious food to share and all the students pitched in to help set up, serve and clean up. It was a true bonding experience for students and staff and helped us all appreciate one another. Thank you!

Harvard Visit

On Wednesday, November 29th we will welcome a team from the Harvard Graduate School of Education School Leadership Program. One of our visitors, Dr. Mary Grassa O'Neill, is the Director of the School Leadership Program and is also my Aunt. I am honored to have her come see the amazing work we have been doing as a community for the last five school years! We will be walking through classrooms in the morning.

Staff Social

Our December Staff Social will take place on Friday, December 1st at Costello's on Centre Street from 3:45pm-6pm. All staff are welcome to attend and mingle!

Artifacts

Please be sure to upload your artifacts on EDFS by Friday, December 15th. You should upload 1-2 artifacts for each goal (two goals) AND each standard (four standards) for a total of 6-12 artifacts. Be sure to upload the data to support your progress with your Student Learning Goal.


Professional Development For Teachers

We will have our 2nd afternoon PD session on Thursday, November 30th from 3:45pm-5:45pm. This is for all teachers. It is the 5th week of the month so there are no leadership team meetings on Wednesday. There will be various sessions taking place:

Curley Cares Gift Drive

Secret Snowflake

The climate team is running a secret snowflake event. This is a great way to spread cheer around the Curley. Don't worry if you don't know many people outside of your grade level team. We have a Snow Flake Interest Google Form you to fill out. Everyone who fills out the form will be entered into a name drawing. You will then collect your snow man's interest sheet and start planning goodies and surprises for them. For more information please look here.

Fall Term Report Card Grading Window for Grades 1 - 8

The fall grading window for students in grades 1-8 is will open from November 20th to December 10th. Please refer to the materials below for instructions on entering grades.
Reminder: After entering or editing grades in the scores tab, teachers must click Post Grades to write the grades to the report cards. Grades will be saved as you enter them but they will not appear on the report cards until you click Post Grades. (Note: Online it will say Grades 1-5 because we changes to that grading schedule)

Health and Wellness

The Health and Wellness committee will be performing an environmental audit on Dec 11 (7:30-10am) at the school library. The purpose of the audit is to look for areas in which is in need of environmental and health improvements at the school. To help with the audit, please complete the survey. This will help the committee narrow down specific areas to focus in on during the audit. Please complete the survey by Dec 5th and your name will be entered to win a special Dunkin Donuts treat!

The Health and Wellness Committee will email the results of the survey, the audit, and suggestions for improvements as soon as both are complete. Bulletin Boards Updated by Friday, December 1st

Bulletin boards communicate the values of our school. Bulletin boards are a window into our classrooms that allow us to share the teaching and learning happening inside. Bulletin boards send a message to students that their work is important and valued here. Please update your bulletin board by Friday, December 1st. You must also include the Curley template which describes the learning your students are doing that links to the instructional focus.

Pest Control

To keep control of our pest problem please go to either main offices and use the pest log to report any pest that you see. At the Curley we don't Care for pest so everyone pitch in by following the see something say something rule.

STAR Reading Progress Monitoring (Grade 3-8 Only)

Progress monitoring is scheduled for March 20th - 24th for all students reading below grade level, including students ranked “On Watch”, “Intervention” and “Urgent Intervention” for the winter STAR Reading Benchmark.

Progress monitoring is completed independently by focus students, and can be scheduled during the WIN block or other convenient time. To begin the assessment, students log into “STAR Reading”, and begin testing. Progress monitoring should take no longer than 20-25 minutes per student.

Lion King Performances

The Lion King performance dates have been announced:

*****April 6 Shubert Theatre Doors open at 5 pm & Show starts at 5:30. (This is an amazing opportunity for all of our students!!!!!)

Message From the Nurse's Office

Spring usually means an increase in field trips. With that in mind we ask that you watch this short video as a fresher on how to use an epipen. It is less then two minutes long. As a reminder, if you are going on a field trip or leaving the building with students it is important to check in with the nurses well in advance. Some students have medication that must travel with them and some students have medical conditions that may need monitoring or special consideration when they are out of the building. Please review permission slips carefully. There is a section in which parents are supposed to check off whether or not their child requires medication on a field trip. Also, please be aware if you have student's in your class who have Life Threatening Allergies. They are supposed to be listed on SIS but we have found that they are not always listed properly. Feel free to email or stop into the nurse's office if you are not sure about allergies in your class. There are emergency epipens in both offices. The epipens in the yellow box are for adults and older children. The ones in green boxes are for smaller children (usually 1st grade and under).

We Take Care of Each Other... Submit Staff Curley Cares Awards
During next week's whole-school PD (Thursday, March 30​ from 3:00-4:15), staff members will once again have the opportunity to recognize their colleagues by giving Curley Cares awards. This is your chance to acknowledge deeds (both big and small) that have made a difference in your work life. So take some time to consider the contributions of the people you work with each day and how their actions support the Curley K-8 "We Care..." philosophy. Chose one person who you would like to recognize and share your appreciation by filling out the Curley Shares Staff Award form. BTU Vote

The votes about the January 2nd PD date and either reporting to school that day for PD or converting it to hours to be used throughout the school year results have come in. 89.8% of staff voted to redistribute the PD hours from January 2nd over the course of the year and 86.6% of staff voted to move to trimesters across the whole school*.

* the trimester vote now needs to be voted on at SPC as well as SSC to make it official.

MCAS (Changed as of 4pm on 3/17/17)

Below you will find the NEW MCAS testing schedule. We had to make some changes to the Math and Science testing dates. DOE is requiring all schools to test in the following sequence: ELA, Math, and Science. As a result, testing dates have been adjusted. Please print and save this calendar. We Care About Our Community!

The Curley Community is excited to announce that we are launching a Community Caring Project this spring.  We will kick off the project by hosting a school-wide Caring March on April 12th at 1:30pm.  All staff and students will participate and families will be invited to march with us.

Many of our students have participated in marches for various causes over the past few months and there have been discussions in many classrooms about the rights of different groups of people in our community.  There is some inspiring work already happening at the Curley.  Ms. Strait’s 4th grade class is doing a Hunger Project, Ms. Mylett and Ms. Moran’s class is spreading kindness by making kindness rocks, and Ms. Merdkhanian’s K1 class had their own march after several students attended the Women’s March in February.

We would like for all classes to gather with their buddy classrooms to collaborate on this project. Students should think about what they care about, and work with their buddies to create signs and posters for the Caring March.  There are lots of things that we care about in our community.  The possibilities are endless!  

Here are some things that students may care about and want to put on signs:
  • Animal rights
  • Illnesses 
  • Hunger
  • Access to school
  • The environment
  • Immigrant rights
  • LGBQ rights
Timeline for the Curley Community Caring Project
  • March: prepare for the Caring March by talking to your students about what they care about and creating signs and posters with your buddy class
  • April: March with your buddy class on April 12th at 1:30.  
  • May and June: Create and complete a community service project.  Ideas, lesson plans, resources and support will be provided.

Instructional Focus Review - POSTPONED TILL 3/28/17

On Tuesday, March 28th from 8am-1pm representatives from BPS will join us for a walkthrough of classrooms and look for evidence of our Instructional Focus "Teachers will vary demands and resources, to optimize challenge, so students can express a clear, organized idea." Visitors may enter any classroom during this window.

10th Annual Curley Silent Auction


The Curley School Parent Council (SPC) will be hosting their 10th Annual Silent Auction at Canary Square on Tuesday, March 28th from 6pm-9pm and would like to extend an invite to all staff, friends and families. The money raised from the Silent Auction goes to directly supporting our school such as Playworks, BalletROX, Arts supplies, science supplies, staff luncheon, Chromebooks etc... There will be more information that will follow about the online auction. Field Trips

Are you going on a field trip soon? Have you shared this information with the nurses and the cafeteria? This is a friendly reminder that the nurse's and cafe should be notified 2 weeks in advance of scheduled field trips. Teachers should also be carefully checking the returned permission slips. They should notify the nurse's office when a parent checks the "yes" box stating that their child requires medication while on the field trip.

Using ESS

If you wish to request a day off (medical appointments, religious holidays, professional day, bereavement, personal day etc...), sign on to Boston Employees Self Service (ESS, Please bookmark this page). When possible, request a personal day at least two weeks in advance. Staff members will request sub coverage through SubCentral (https://subcentral.bostonpublicschools.org/logOnInitAction.do). Please do not decide whether you think a sub is needed and submit the request as soon as you know a day you will be absent. We have many unexpected coverage needs that might need sub help. We are attaching a list of subs who usually work at the Curley upon request.
