Shout out to Joanne Mylett for being so supportive during the days I was out sick. Not only did she deliver lesson plans to the substitute but she also photo copied what would be needed for the day. It made resting and getting better much easier. Thanks so much. :)

Shout out to Sarah Quatrale, Colin McDougall, Danielle West, Heide Signes, Rebecca Decaneas, and Viola Pike for taking the lead on MCAS make ups. You are on top of each student once they reenter this building and you continue to motivate students each day! Thank you for caring so much and we all look forward to testing ending this week!

Shout out to Erika Mercado, Keon Hill, Princess Ortega and Adrian Ward-Jackson for their swift, calm and caring response to a students who fell after school. Your efforts helped a family feel safe and supported at school.

Shout out to Heide Signes and her former 3rd grade students (current 6th grade students) for yearly reviving Daria's Garden. This is a beautiful tribute to Daria and the impact she had on all of our lives during our time here. Her family will truly appreciate this sentiment!

Science MCAS Grades 5 & 8

We have updated the Testing Schedule for the 2018-2019 Science MCAS MCAS Calendar & Daily Schedule. Please review the daily schedule for the testing days, lunches, and Specials. Click on the sheets at the bottom of the page. Let Mr. Diaz know by Monday 5/20 if there is an issue.

You also need to check your Testing Session (most Homeroom teachers will have TTS session as well) and make sure that your password is working so you can access the Pearson Access Next website. Jessica Burke and Renee Ward have updated the list of small groups, proctors, and testing locations Science MCAS Small groups grades 5 and 8th

In addition, please review the slides about Monitoring Test Sessions and as well as the your Test Administrator Manual and take time to go over the 2019 MCAS Roles and Responsibilities document. I am also attaching a copy of the 2019 MCAS Check List to help you stay organized before, during, and after testing.

We have enough headphones for all students but students are allowed to bring their own. The Admin team will be stationed again in Ms. Grassa's office and we will have tickets ready at 7:45 am. We are testing less students this time but the 1st day we might need more time to check everybody in. Please contact a member of the the Admin Team if you have any questions.

Weekly Math Resource

Would You Rather is a great Web resource for Do-Nows. Every problem is framed Would you rather....Whichever option you choose, justify your reasoning with mathematics. Some challenges have one right answer, for others the answer will represent an opinion. Tasks are organized by grade band: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Most tasks focus on something that is relevant and engaging for students in ways that can help students see where they will use math in daily life. And, the more Would You Rathers… you do, the better the students will become at justifying their reasoning with mathematics. The site encourages submission of new questions, so after you’ve done a few, create one with your class so they can see their ideas published online. http://www.wouldyourathermath.com

Art Show

The Curley Art Showcase is a day to celebrate the visual art creations of all the students at The Curley. Please join us May 23rd from 5-7pm to view works and honor our creative students. Art work by every student will be on display in the lower level of the upper school. This evening will include a dance performance and music. Food, refreshments and an arts themed raffle will also be part of the evening festivities. More information about the event will be sent home with each student very soon. Attention Middle School teachers and staff

The Curley 2019 Middle School Spring Dance is this Friday, May 24, 2019 from 1:50 to 2:55 in the Upper School gymnasium. The admission fee is $4.00 and students will pre-pay it by purchasing a wristband from their homeroom teachers. Remember to give those out on the same day of the dance. Keep the money with you and I will come by and collect it. The proceeds of the entrance fee will be used to pay for some expenses for our moving-on ceremony and the end-of-year trip to Canobie Lake.

K2, 1st and 2nd grade teachers

The end of year window for BAS is open from May 20 - June 14. Be sure to find the highest instructional level and a hard level for each child. All data must be uploaded to the BAS Spreadsheet by June 17th. Caitlyn will communicate coverage ASAP.

LGBTQ+ Picnic

Come join us for our annual LGBTQ+ Picnic on Thursday, May 30th at 6PM! All families are welcome to come and bring their own picnic and share in our celebration! The picnic will take place on the Curley field; in case of rain we will be in the upper school cafeteria.

EL Summer Program Forms 2019

Summer school registration for ELL's begins next week. Attached are the applications for ELL'S in every language. If you want students to attend please give them the registration form and have them return it Waverly no later than May 24, 2019. Seats on a first come first serve basis so the quicker students return the forms the quicker we can enroll them. This programming is for all ELL'S 1-5 enter grades 3-12. STAR ELA Spring Benchmark May 28th -31st (Grades 3-8 Only)

Spring ELA benchmark testing for Grades 3-8 will take place from Tuesday, May 28th through end of day Friday, May 31st. Testing should be scheduled during WIN block or other convenient time. All students, regardless of performance level, must take the spring STAR Reading benchmark assessment. Students can access STAR Reading through Clever under the blue "R" tile. Testing should take no longer than 20 minutes and is group administered. The data we collect provides valuable insights into a child's growth as a reader. Please remind your students of the importance of this testing and be sure to provide a quiet, distraction-free testing environment, so all students can do their best. To assure consistency, all benchmark testing must occur during the prescribed testing window. Please contact Eileen Cronin if you have any questions or concern.

ANNOUNCING International Week Dates for SY 2019-20!

Based on data from the 2018 International Committee Feedback survey, International Week for the upcoming school year has been scheduled for the week of December 2-6, 2019. The expectation is that all 56 homerooms will participate in this cultural exchange, sharing what they learn with their buddy classes. As you make plans for next year, we encourage you to start thinking about a country to study and how it might connect to your curriculum

Curley Arrival Changes 6/1/19

Starting June 1st we will be changing our arrival procedures and families will no longer be allowed to walk their child to class. This is a pilot to help us prepare for the start of next year. To ensure that our implementation of this new policy goes smoothly, we will be doing the following:

• Communicating with families about the upcoming changes. This flyer will go home to families to explain the policy change. Please be proactive in reaching out to families you anticipate will struggle with this new policy.
• Families will be able to give feedback using this form when implementation begins in June.
• We will also be sending out robocalls over the next month to prepare families.
• For staff members who encounter families at the door, please use this language to frame and describe our new arrival policy.
• Finally, please review this arrival document to see revised morning duty posts. It is especially important that those staff members who are posted at doors are able to communicate our new policy to families. 

Boosterthon

The SPC is leading the Boosterthon Fundraiser for the 2nd year. The Boosterthon team needs to come in for 10-15 min to meet with each team and explain the process. Boosterthon Fun Run will take place on Wednesday, June 12th.

Shout out to Connie Redden, Geju Brown, Keon Hill, Emanuela Alves, Melanie Bourgeault, Kim Taylor Knight, Ava Untermyer for leading and organizing the African American History Assembly for students and families today! Seeing students on stage empowered to perform and share their talents makes our school a better place. Our students learn so much about themselves by performing as well as the positive messages and learning that happens as an audience member. The energy and enthusiasm you all brought to the perform today was contagious! Thank you!

BTU Walk-In Tomorrow (Friday)

We will continue our Walk-Ins for a fair contract tomorrow, Friday, March 15, before school. If you haven't participated in the past, make sure you are out there this Friday, to represent your union, your profession, and to let everyone know about the schools our #StudentsDeserve! Please join us at the Centre St. lobby to pick up a sign at 7:55 a.m. We would like to have a strong showing from start to finish, standing united from 8:00-8:15, and walking in to school together.

CPT Cycle March 3rd-May 3rd

Thank you to the teachers who provided feedback from the first 109 days of school regarding CPT time. We have heard that you are supportive of the structure but need more time to implement the CPT Cycles within the Curley Work Plan. We would like to propose that from 3/4/19-5/3/19 that teams will complete a CPT Cycle based on Interim 3 data (ELA for everyone but middle school math and science) as well as hold one climate meeting. Everyone will begin with CPT 1 starting the week of March 3, 2019. This will give teams between 6-8 CPT meetings (depending on days off) ato complete these items (The additional PDs can be for planning MCAS reviews in Math and ELA). Below are sample agendas for each CPT meeting. Team have the autonomy to map out these weeks so they can complete the full cycle by 5/3/19. See ILT representatives for more details.

• CPT #1 - Looking at Data/Focus students - Review most recent forms of data (ELA Interim 2, Lexia etc…) in order to understand where your students are in connection to the grade level learning standards. Choose a focus standard/area for the upcoming unit plan.
• CPT #2 - Unit Plan Overview - Preview the upcoming unit, specifically focus on where within this unit the focus standard/area you choose during CPT 1 and where it can be explicitly taught.
• CPT #3 - Plan Lesson - Collaboratively plan one lesson as a team that relates to the focus standard/area chosen during CPT 1. This lesson should be based on the data from your assessment and be a highly assessed standard.
• CPT #4 - LASW - All team members bring focus student work for the collaboratively planned lesson (CPT 3) and complete the protocol.
• CPT #5 - Reflection - Take time to reflect on this CPT cycle.

Math Facilitator Update

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has hundreds of free lessons plans and interactives at the Illuminations Web site. Lesson plans are organized by grade band: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 and brain teasers. The Interactives are free online games. Calculation Nation is particularly good and challenging for developing number sense and strategies - you need to register for Calculation Nation, but it’s free. https://illuminations.nctm.org/Default.aspx

MCAS Calendar grades 3-8

We have updated the Testing Schedule for the 2018-2019 Spring ELA, Math, and Science MCAS MCAS Calendar. Please revise the new dates and session times with your grade and content teams.
You also need to update your password to access the Pearson Access Next website. You should have received an email from Pearson requesting that you activate your username and password. Mr. Diaz, Jessica Burke, and Renee Ward are working on the list of small groups, proctors, and testing locations.
In addition, please review the slides about Monitoring Test Sessions and as well as the your Test Administrator Manual
Mr. Diaz will attending grade 3-8 CPT meetings through the month of March to review dates, schedules, access, and protocols. Please let Mr. Diaz know if you have any questions.

Special Education Progress Reports

• 2nd round of Progress Reports are due in Edplan by 9 am March 20th for all grade levels. Please enter under Progress Report 1. Please make sure your name and title appear after the entry.
• Progress Report Video please review the guidelines below as well. Progress Report Power Point
• When entering progress reports please make sure you a entering in your domain/goal area. There are no headings and you will see all goals for all providers when you log in. Please be careful not to erase information in the text box. You can label your entry "2nd Marking Period 3.2019" or "Progress Report 2 March 2019". Please make sure your name and title appear after the entry.
• Do not click Finalize. Click Save and Move On. Renee and I will do the finalization. If you finalize before all providers have entered they will be locked out.
• It is important to be mindful of recent IEP meetings and pending parent response to a proposed IEP. If a new IEP is signed and entered during this period it will erase previously entered progress reports.
• Please make sure you are writing progress on all benchmarks including level of support needed to accomplish that goal.

Fall Fling Raffle Tickets

This year’s Fall Fling is Friday, October 19th and we hope you can come!
We are sending home 10 Fall Fling Raffle Tickets for families to purchase, sell or return. Please send the attached letters and tickets home with each student. The tickets and payment will come back in the envelopes provided. We are asking that they be returned by Tuesday, October 16th and we will come by to collect them during that week. October, 2018 Curley Cares Student Awards

The first Curley Cares assembly of the 2018-2019 school year will be held in Friday, October 26, 2018. Curley Cares awards are intended to reinforce positive student behaviors in support of the Curley Cares rules and the expectation/hope is that every Curley K8 student should earn at least one award each year. Throughout the year, reach out to members of your grade-level team, paras, specialists, and other staff to help try and make this happen (any staff member with a BPS Google login can access the form). 

With this in mind PLEASE take a moment (perhaps during CPT) to recognize students who are doing their best to support the Curley Cares way. Please use the OCTOBER 2018 FORM to submit names in order for students your work with to receive an award at our Friday, October 26, 2018 Curley Shares assemblies.

The Curley K-8 School and the Rosie’s Place School Collaborative Program have partnered to bring resources and support to moms and/or female caregivers of Curley students. Rosie’s Place Staff provide a wide range of services and support, including:

• Utility Assistance: apply for protections, affordable payment plans, funding to avoid shut-offs
• Housing: eviction prevention funds, security deposit, housing applications
• Referrals: free clothing, furniture, funding assistance
• Funding for MA IDs, birth certificates, uniform assistance
• Resources for food assistance and access
• Transportation
• Monthly groups/workshops

If there is anything you need assistance with or have concerns about, please contact Stephanie at (617) 320-4117 or speak with Guidance, Cristina Silva (K-3) or Sugeily Santos (4-8) , for a referral. We will also have a representative coming to the Curley once a month. We will provide staff with dates and times soon. Advocacy services are offered in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Cape Verdean Creole. We can connect with translators for all other languages.

Curley Ambassadors of Dance (CAD)

Next week we begin our ninth year of Curley Ambassadors of Dance, on Tuesday, October 9th from 3:30 to 4:30. Students should meet Ms. Knight in the walker yard and at dismissal will be released from the CASP entrance. Disney Musical

In two weeks rehearsals for the Disney Musical will begin on October 17, at 3:30 to 5:00 pm. No need to pre-register. You must be able to pick up your child at 5:00 or if they are in CASP, they will be escorted back to the appropriate classrooms after rehearsals. Rehearsals are Wednesday through March. Students should meet Ms. Knight in the walker yard at dismissal. Pick up at 5 pm is at the CASP entrance. Terranova Testing SY 2018-2019

During the period of October 9 ‐ 16, 2018, students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will be administered the TerraNova, third edition, in Reading and Mathematics in order to determine AWC eligibility for the 2019‐2020 school year. For the last two years our Excellence for All (EFA) schools have made clear that students would have access to the same level of rigor and enrichment through EFA programming. They have also made 5th grade parents aware that the TerraNova scores are used to identify students for the Exam School Initiative along with AWC eligibility. We will start administering the Terranova at Curley K-8 School test on Wednesday October 10 2018. Please Mr. Diaz if you have any questions or concerns.

Field Trip Request Procedure

All field trips requests should be submitted in the following way, check out this powerpoint for additional information on the steps.

• Fill out electronic form at least 2 weeks in advance. This link will be available in the blog daily. Field Trip Request Form
• Print your form submission. 
• Email list of students attending to nurses. 
• Get nurse and cafeteria signature at least 2 weeks in advance. They can sign anywhere at the bottom of your page. 
• Turn in to either main office.

• The SPC has allotted each grade level $500 to put towards field trips; any questions should be send to treasurer@curleyk8.com.

Shout Out

Shout out to Patty Garcia, Hoda Hindiyeh, Meg Nason and Waverly Kidd for being so flexible, understanding, and helpful in such short notice today. They all played a part of making sure all students in second grade were supported and learning continued while a teammate was out sick.

Shout out to Melanie Bourgeault for fostering a strong partnership with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Our students enjoyed the field trip this week and this was an amazing opportunity for our students.

 

 

 

BTU Voting Results & Vote This Week

• We voted to hold PD on Thursday, 5/3/18 from 3:45pm-5:45pm for all teachers (only paras who still owe time)

Curley Art Show

On April 12th from 5-7 pm we will host our Annual Art Show. There will be artwork from all students that have visual art as well as music from our fabulous band, a CAD dance performance and some of Mr. Paulling's fabulous actors! Please encourage families and friends to come and see the amazing accomplishments and strides they made in the arts learning this year!

Happy Teacher Challenge!

This is the last week of the Happy Curley Teacher Challenge. Thank you to all of you who have sent in entires. Keep them coming! Feel free to turn in entires from past week's challenges. For our last week, we have two challenges that promote giving back. The first challenge is to take a moment to observe a classroom (10 mins or less) and write the class a positive note! Our second challenge asks you to take some time to write your future self a letter. As an added treat, we'll send it to you at the end of the summer! Here's to a happy week!

Artifacts

Artifacts are due April 13th. Please reread over your formative evaluation. If your evaluator has indicated that you are missing an artifact please add that artifact and update any data that is connected to your goals.

MCAS Information - Action Required

MCAS Proctoring teachers and Staff:
Please make sure you stress upon your students to raise their hands and let you know when they are done with their tests. It is important that either individually or as group, you ensure and monitor that all students press the submit button when they have completed their test. You can also monitor in your session who is not done testing or if a submitted test did not go through. Let Mr. Diaz, Mrs. Burque or Mrs. Jackson know if you have any questions or concerns.  All staff should be informed of the protocols and logistics around MCAS. Please review the MCAS Roles and Responsibilities (and links included in the Roles and Responsibilities).

April, 2018 Curley Cares Student Awards

Please recognize students who are doing their best to support the Curley Cares way by using theAPRIL 2018 FORM to submit names for your students to receive an award at our Wednesday, April 25, 201 8 Curley Cares assemblies. These awards are intended to reinforce positive student behaviors in support of the Curley Cares rules and the expectation is that every Curley K8 student should receive at least one award each year. With this in mind, please refer to THIS LIST to see those students who have already received award(s) this school year. If you'd like to give more than 3 awards, please coordinate with your grade-level colleagues such as specialists or other staff. Summer Planning for Students

We are reaching out from the Guidance Office to share information regarding Summer Planning for our K1 through 8th grade students! We are hoping to gather a list of students that you think would require support in the summer planning process. With this in mind, if you know of students who:

• Have expressed interest in attending a summer camp OR have expressed interest in not being at home this summer
• Have parents who are experiencing challenges in finding or filling out applications for camps (whether due to language barrier, work schedule etc.)
• Are most likely not going to summer school
• Please feel free to email Sugeily Santos (ssantos@bostonpublicschools.org) and Cristina Silva (csilva4@bostonpublicschools.org) their names and we will follow up with those students individually.

Autism Awareness Day/Month

Lets Light it up BLUE! April is Autism Awareness month. Team PACE will be wearing blue on Fridays for the month. We hope you all join in! We are lucky to serve approximately 90 students with Autism everyday here at school.

Green Cleaner Swap Day

Green Cleaner Swap Day has been POSTPONED to Tuesday, April 24th (7:45-10am). In order to ensure healthy air quality for all students, Curley staff will be switching our cleaners to be green cleaners. Due to this policy, we will be hosting a Green Cleaner Swap day on April 24th. We are still in need of parents to help label and distribute to all classes/ swap out cleaners. Please sign up or email nly@bostonpublicschools.org if you are interested. Can’t come but would love to help out? Consider donating paper towels to the school. You can drop off your paper towels at the front office (both lower and upper school) or drop it off in room 209 Upper School.

Playworks

• Thursday, May 10th from is Peace on Earth night! At recess across the country there has been numerous incidents of bullying both verbal and physical. Coach Jacqui wants to bring awareness to this growing problem and give the community the resources to support students. A local speaker will start off the night, and students and families will rotate through stations focusing on relaxation techniques and bullying prevention.
• On Saturday, May 19th is Playworks Run for Recess 5K. This is a fundraiser that Playworks hosts every year to raise money and awareness for the importance of recess in low income school systems. The Run for Recess is a unique 5K and One Mile Fun Run race that gives families the opportunity to participate in a race for the very first time. The Run for Recess offers opportunities for the whole family to get involved at Franklin Park's world-famous cross-country course adjacent to the zoo! All participants will enjoy a fun family environment, an electronically timed race, and an awesome goodie bag. Paper registration forms will be handed out by Coach Jacqui during school or sign up with this link: playworks.org/ne-run2018.
