Shout Out

Shout out to Ms. Green. Thank you Ms. Green for introducing the 5th grade team to the Best Part of Me. The 5th graders did an amazing job with this "photo essay" project that was only made better with the Help of Ms. Nason.

Shout out to Ms. Youman and Ms. Alves for helping with transitions during double blocks on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Shout out to all staff for welcoming families into our building this evening! It was great to see so many people come out and want to connect with teachers across the grades who have positively influenced their child's life.

Shout out to Laura Shea and Helenia Solomini for pointing out a bias between our English and Spanish Emergency Cards. Thank you for pushing for a change that is equitable for all families!

Refrigerator Available for Teachers Room

A Curley parent, Rob Ditzion, is replacing a perfectly good refrigerator, about the size of the one the Curley has now. Teachers and Paras, please consider whether to pursue it. It would have to be retrieved from his JP residence. If enough people think it would be good to have a second refrigerator, please weigh in and plans can get made for several strong people to pick it up, if someone can make a pickup available. Contact Charles T. (would be one of the pickup crew). He'll have to let Mr. Ditzion know - YES OR NO - by Monday afternoon.

Support for Hurricane Victims

Our 7th grade Geography classes are taking on a project to help us think about how to Care About the World. They are particularly focusing on the devastation in Puerto Rico and Houston. We will have an event to raise funds for these effected areas. More info will be forthcoming and we will be looking for your input and support. Please reach out to Craig Melzer with ideas or questions.

Emergency Cards

We need emergency cards from all students. Once you receive one from everyone please make a copy for the main office and the nurses office as well. Open House is a great time to collect any that are missing.

Window Schedule

In both the Upper and Lower School you may see our contractors caulking the outside of the windows while you are teaching. We are trying to not distract the work in classrooms but this work needs to be done in daylight. Below is the two week schedule for rooms that will be working on in the afternoon inside each classroom. Please make sure that all furniture in these rooms is 3ft-5ft away from the windows and staff exit this space after dismissal. We will send a new update every two weeks. Please direct all questions about windows to Katie Grassa.

Note from Superintendent Tommy Chang

The devastating natural disasters in recent weeks that have impacted large portions of the southern United States, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Caribbean have touched many of us directly or indirectly. During these times, it is important for us to come together as a community to support our students, families and staff who have been affected, as well help the people in these regions try to recover from these events.

Within the Boston Public Schools (BPS) community, many students, families and staff have loved ones living in the impacted areas. This BPS website has resources to help staff talk to students about natural disasters. We have also included tips on how to care for your own mental health after a natural disaster.  

I ask that schools share ideas on how we can provide comfort to our communities and support relief efforts. We can all work together to collect ideas on this document.  I would like to thank the school leaders who have shared their thoughts with me directly and provided examples of letters that they have sent to their school communities.

As Bostonians, we don’t shy away from stepping up to help others in times of emergency — and our city has been grateful for the support it has received during our own times of crisis. Please join us in donating to organizations such as the American Red Cross, UNICEF, and Save the Children, and in supporting one another everyday.

Playworks Class Game Time (CGT)

Due to Playworks professional development trainings, the afternoon CGT are cancelled for this week.Those who have signed up for morning slots on weeks 1 & 3 of the month will have their first CGT this week. I will be stopping by in the morning the day of your CGTs as a reminder and notify the location. Feel free to email me any questions you have (jacqueline.conley@playworks.org).

This is the finalized CGT schedule for K2-5th grade. Please double check that your times are correct and fit with your schedule. We have a little wiggle room for swaps with open times so please get back to me as soon as possible if there is a problem or concern. This week is the 3rd week of the month so I will be seeing all of my morning classes for the rest of the week. I will come by in the morning as a reminder and work out a good location for your CGT. Afternoon lessons are cancelled for this week and will begin next week. I apologize for this inconvenience but I have professional development training with Playworks at 3:00 pm.

Counseling Services for Students

The Guidance Office is charged with providing a range of services to students, families, and faculty that support and promote the successful functioning of our students. One of the ways we do this is by providing students with individual counseling services. We are very fortunate to have amazing clinicians from The Home for Little Wanderers, Children Services of Roxbury (CSR), and Community Service Institute (CSI) to support our students. These Clinicians provide a range of services including, but not limited to: providing solution­-focused strategies to help students manage problems that may arise during the school day, providing crisis assessments and developing safety plans, and working with teachers to help them understand how a student’s social­/emotional concerns may impact their academic performance and identify classroom strategies that can help the student to be successful.
If during the course of this school year, you have a student in need of counseling services, please inform Ms. Santos (4-8th grade) or Ms. Silva (K-3rd grade). All students seeking counseling services MUST receive parental consent in order to receive school-based services. You can obtain parent permission by sending home the "Parent Permission Form," then, submitting the form to Ms. Santos or Ms. Silva. You can find copies of this form below, in the Lower or Upper school office, or by visiting the Guidance Office located in the Upper-School room 203.

Fall Assessment - Updates

STAR assessments, as well as Accelerated Reader, have been activated in students' digital backpack. As a result, we are extending the fall testing window. All Interim #1 assessments, including STAR Reading, STAR Math and written open response, should be completed by end of day, September 28th. Open response prompts and accompanying scoring rubrics will be posted. Please contact Lindsey Morgan or Eileen Cronin with any questions.

Guide to the Boston Public Schools (Formerly Blue Guide Books Handed to Families)

The following is a message going out to families:
In an effort to reduce paper waste and create a more efficient system, BPS has decided to move the guide online. Families and students will view the guide and fill out necessary online at www.bostonpublicschools.org/family guide.

The guide is available in English and nine other languages. It outlines many of the district's policies, programs, and services. A separate booklet contains forms needs to be completed at www.bostonpublicschools.org/contact.

A limited number of paper booklets will be provided to each main office for families of students who are new to BPS or do not have access to the internet. We encourage you to go online and complete the form for each of your students as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation. 

ID Badges

Please remember to wear you badge tomorrow and also to let yourself in the building. If you have lost or misplaced your badge please let Kathy Powers know. We recognize that not all new staff have their IDs yet and we are working on this.

Open House

Open House is on Thursday, September 28th from 5pm-7pm. All teachers, nurses, guidance counselors, coaches, admin will be present to greet families for this event. We will do a call and email blast as a reminder to families. Please be sure to also communicate the information to students and families as well. At the event we will have several resources and stations. Be sure to communicate the following with families:

• 21st Century Funding information and gathering of family input will take place in the Upper School Main Lobby.
• Sugeily and Cristina will have some partners for families to connect with and out school partners will all be present.
• Encourage students being present and on time everyday.
• Be sure all forms are completed by families such as: Terra Nova opt out, emergency cards, BPS Guides (done online see note below), physical and health forms
• All middle school staff should show families how to sign on to LiveSchools as well as SIS Gradebook and please remind families that we have moved to a trimester model.

Our goal is to ensure that every student attends school regularly.
Showing up for school has a significant impact on a student’s academic success starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school. Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in ensuring students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and in life. In an effort to encourage parents to send their students to school everyday and on time, we are asking you to send home a copy of the “Attendance Works” flyer. You will find a copy of the flyer in your mailbox. Please make sure to send the flyer home tomorrow, Tuesday, September, 26th. In addition, please take a moment at our Open House to review the flyer with parents.

Playworks Class Game Time (CGT)

Due to Playworks professional development trainings, the afternoon CGT are cancelled for this week.Those who have signed up for morning slots on weeks 1 & 3 of the month will have their first CGT this week. Wheelock Visit for Teachers

On Wednesday, September 27th from 11:00am-1:00pm in the faculty lounge, Paul Akoury, Director of Field Education, and Ryan Lovell, Licensure Preparation Officer at Wheelock College, will visit Curley School as part of Wheelock’s continued efforts to deepen the partnership and provide support to supervising practitioners. Their visit will be an informal opportunity for them to speak with staff and: (a) share information and resources with supervising practitioners, as well as answer questions or address concerns; (b) meet teachers who may be interested in serving as a supervising practitioner for Wheelock in future semesters.

Counseling Services for Students

The Guidance Office is charged with providing a range of services to students, families, and faculty that support and promote the successful functioning of our students. One of the ways we do this is by providing students with individual counseling services. We are very fortunate to have amazing clinicians from The Home for Little Wanderers, Children Services of Roxbury (CSR), and Community Service Institute (CSI) to support our students. These Clinicians provide a range of services including, but not limited to: providing solution­-focused strategies to help students manage problems that may arise during the school day, providing crisis assessments and developing safety plans, and working with teachers to help them understand how a student’s social­/emotional concerns may impact their academic performance and identify classroom strategies that can help the student to be successful.
If during the course of this school year, you have a student in need of counseling services, please inform Ms. Santos (4-8th grade) or Ms. Silva (K-3rd grade). All students seeking counseling services MUST receive parental consent in order to receive school-based services. You can obtain parent permission by sending home the "Parent Permission Form," then, submitting the form to Ms. Santos or Ms. Silva. You can find copies of this form below, in the Lower or Upper school office, or by visiting the Guidance Office located in the Upper-School room 203.

Fall Assessment - Updates

STAR assessments, as well as Accelerated Reader, have been activated in students' digital backpack. As a result, we are extending the fall testing window. All Interim #1 assessments, including STAR Reading, STAR Math and written open response, should be completed by end of day, September 28th. Open response prompts and accompanying scoring rubrics will be posted. Please contact Lindsey Morgan or Eileen Cronin with any questions.

Water Updates

Following our water bubbler walkthrough today the following will be put in place starting Tuesday, September 12th. Thank you for your ideas and patience as we make the process more clear to everyone.

• There will be one water bubbler in each hallway of both buildings
• Central locations will also have a bubbler: main offices, cafeterias, gymnasiums, nurses office
• Classrooms that have students with medical needs will also receive a bubblier: Lower School Room 116 & 121 Upper School Room 017, 115 & 207
• Due to a lack of electrical outlets some bubblers will not be plugged in and this means the water will be room temperature
• Facilities will look into having electrical outlets installed in the coming weeks as well as mats placed under the bubbler to avoid spilt water
• Custodians will fill each bubbler every night and leave 4-5 full jugs next to each bubbler
• Staff should get cups from each main office for students and/or encourage our students to bring in their own water bottles
• Kathy Powers & Madeline Vazquez will be responsible for ordering water jugs and cups for our community, please communicate any issue and/or questions with them

Guide to the Boston Public Schools (Formerly Blue Guide Books Handed to Families)

The following is a message going out to families:
In an effort to reduce paper waste and create a more efficient system, BPS has decided to move the guide online. Families and students will view the guide and fill out necessary online at www.bostonpublicschools.org/family guide.

The guide is available in English and nine other languages. It outlines many of the district's policies, programs, and services. A separate booklet contains forms needs to be completed at www.bostonpublicschools.org/contact.

A limited number of paper booklets will be provided to each main office for families of students who are new to BPS or do not have access to the internet. We encourage you to go online and complete the form for each of your students as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation.

Attendance Notice

Our goal is to ensure that every student attends school regularly.
Showing up for school has a significant impact on a student’s academic success starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school. Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in ensuring students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and in life. In an effort to encourage parents to send their students to school everyday and on time, we are asking you to send home a copy of the “Attendance Works” flyer. You will find a copy of the flyer in your mailbox. Please make sure to send the flyer home tomorrow, Tuesday, September, 26th. In addition, please take a moment at our Open House to review the flyer with parents.

Emergency Cards

We need emergency cards from all students. Once you receive one from everyone please make a copy for the main office and the nurses office as well. Open House is a great time to collect any that are missing.

Benchmark Assessments Due - Grades 3-8

Just a reminder that Interim #1 assessments should be completed by end of day this Thursday, September 28th, including STAR Reading, Star Math and open responses. Please contact Lindsey Morgan or Eileen Cronin if you have any questions.

Election Day

Tuesday, September 26th is Election Day and the Curley is a voting site. This will mean a lot of traffic around our school all day and potential parking issues. Please keep this in mind as you commute to school for Tuesday. There will be many adults in our building if you see anyone walk through the building to vote please escort them to the nearest door and have them walk through the voting entrance (located by the Upper School Parking Lot). Stairwell A (by the main office) will be off limits for the day.

Window Schedule

In both the Upper and Lower School you may see our contractors caulking the outside of the windows while you are teaching. We are trying to not distract the work in classrooms but this work needs to be done in daylight. Below is the two week schedule for rooms that will be working on in the afternoon inside each classroom. Please make sure that all furniture in these rooms is 3ft-5ft away from the windows and staff exit this space after dismissal. We will send a new update every two weeks. Please direct all questions about windows to Katie Grassa.

Open House

Open House is on Thursday, September 28th from 5pm-7pm. All teachers, nurses, guidance counselors, coaches, admin will be present to greet families for this event. We will do a call and email blast as a reminder to families. Please be sure to also communicate the information to students and families as well. At the event we will have several resources and stations. Be sure to communicate the following with families:

• 21st Century Funding information and gathering of family input will take place in the Upper School Main Lobby.
• Sugeily and Cristina will have some partners for families to connect with and out school partners will all be present.
• Encourage students being present and on time everyday.
• Be sure all forms are completed by families such as: Terra Nova opt out, emergency cards, BPS Guides (done online see note below), physical and health forms
• All middle school staff should show families how to sign on to LiveSchools as well as SIS Gradebook and please remind families that we have moved to a trimester model.

Reminder - Summer Reader Recognition

The devastating natural disasters in recent weeks that have impacted large portions of the southern United States, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Caribbean have touched many of us directly or indirectly. During these times, it is important for us to come together as a community to support our students, families and staff who have been affected, as well help the people in these regions try to recover from these events.

Within the Boston Public Schools (BPS) community, many students, families and staff have loved ones living in the impacted areas. This BPS website has resources to help staff talk to students about natural disasters. We have also included tips on how to care for your own mental health after a natural disaster.  

I ask that schools share ideas on how we can provide comfort to our communities and support relief efforts. We can all work together to collect ideas on this document.  I would like to thank the school leaders who have shared their thoughts with me directly and provided examples of letters that they have sent to their school communities.

As Bostonians, we don’t shy away from stepping up to help others in times of emergency — and our city has been grateful for the support it has received during our own times of crisis. Please join us in donating to organizations such as the American Red Cross, UNICEF, and Save the Children, and in supporting one another everyday.

Shout out to Anne Saint Juste and Cara MacDonald for all their help this week. I know its only the second week of school for our K0 students but our students are already showing so much improvement with following their school day routine. I couldn't have done it with out you.

Early Childhood Assessments now on Illuminate!

Laminator

Laminator is out of order. More laminate is on order. Will advise when it's back up and running. Kudos to people for following our announced laminator guidelines.

Wheelock Visit for Teachers

On Wednesday, September 27th from 11:00am-1:00pm in the faculty lounge, Paul Akoury, Director of Field Education, and Ryan Lovell, Licensure Preparation Officer at Wheelock College, will visit Curley School as part of Wheelock’s continued efforts to deepen the partnership and provide support to supervising practitioners. Their visit will be an informal opportunity for them to speak with staff and: (a) share information and resources with supervising practitioners, as well as answer questions or address concerns; (b) meet teachers who may be interested in serving as a supervising practitioner for Wheelock in future semesters.

Counseling Services for Students

The Guidance Office is charged with providing a range of services to students, families, and faculty that support and promote the successful functioning of our students. One of the ways we do this is by providing students with individual counseling services. We are very fortunate to have amazing clinicians from The Home for Little Wanderers, Children Services of Roxbury (CSR), and Community Service Institute (CSI) to support our students. These Clinicians provide a range of services including, but not limited to: providing solution­-focused strategies to help students manage problems that may arise during the school day, providing crisis assessments and developing safety plans, and working with teachers to help them understand how a student’s social­/emotional concerns may impact their academic performance and identify classroom strategies that can help the student to be successful.
If during the course of this school year, you have a student in need of counseling services, please inform Ms. Santos (4-8th grade) or Ms. Silva (K-3rd grade). All students seeking counseling services MUST receive parental consent in order to receive school-based services. You can obtain parent permission by sending home the "Parent Permission Form," then, submitting the form to Ms. Santos or Ms. Silva. You can find copies of this form below, in the Lower or Upper school office, or by visiting the Guidance Office located in the Upper-School room 203.

Fall Assessment - Updates

STAR assessments, as well as Accelerated Reader, have been activated in students' digital backpack. As a result, we are extending the fall testing window. All Interim #1 assessments, including STAR Reading, STAR Math and written open response, should be completed by end of day, September 28th. Open response prompts and accompanying scoring rubrics will be posted. Please contact Lindsey Morgan or Eileen Cronin with any questions.

Water Updates

Following our water bubbler walkthrough today the following will be put in place starting Tuesday, September 12th. Thank you for your ideas and patience as we make the process more clear to everyone.

• There will be one water bubbler in each hallway of both buildings
• Central locations will also have a bubbler: main offices, cafeterias, gymnasiums, nurses office
• Classrooms that have students with medical needs will also receive a bubblier: Lower School Room 116 & 121 Upper School Room 017, 115 & 207
• Due to a lack of electrical outlets some bubblers will not be plugged in and this means the water will be room temperature
• Facilities will look into having electrical outlets installed in the coming weeks as well as mats placed under the bubbler to avoid spilt water
• Custodians will fill each bubbler every night and leave 4-5 full jugs next to each bubbler
• Staff should get cups from each main office for students and/or encourage our students to bring in their own water bottles
• Kathy Powers & Madeline Vazquez will be responsible for ordering water jugs and cups for our community, please communicate any issue and/or questions with them

Curley Cares Fund

Guide to the Boston Public Schools (Formerly Blue Guide Books Handed to Families)

The following is a message going out to families:
In an effort to reduce paper waste and create a more efficient system, BPS has decided to move the guide online. Families and students will view the guide and fill out necessary online at www.bostonpublicschools.org/family guide.

The guide is available in English and nine other languages. It outlines many of the district's policies, programs, and services. A separate booklet contains forms needs to be completed at www.bostonpublicschools.org/contact.

A limited number of paper booklets will be provided to each main office for families of students who are new to BPS or do not have access to the internet. We encourage you to go online and complete the form for each of your students as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation. 

ID Badges

Please remember to wear you badge tomorrow and also to let yourself in the building. If you have lost or misplaced your badge please let Kathy Powers know. We recognize that not all new staff have their IDs yet and we are working on this.

Emergency Cards

In your mailbox ( upper and lower school) is a copy of the English/Spanish Emergency card, instructions for volunteers on how to do CORI forms online and your bus tags and labels. We need emergency cards from all students. Once you receive one from everyone please make a copy for the main office and the nurses office as well.
