Mask-Free Speech

When scheduling speech and teacher of the Deaf (TOD) services, please make efforts to leave times available on Wednesdays. Because Wednesday is full remote, students and teachers will not be wearing masks. Given the nature of speech sound disorders, stuttering, and comprehension work for children with hearing impairment, these students will benefit most from speech practice and listening for aural rehabilitation without masks.

Preventing Zoom Bombing

Zoom has started alerting teachers if they find Zoom links on social media and caught the following Tweet from a BPS student over the weekend, inviting people to Zoom Bomb their classroom. We recommend teachers take extra care to safeguard their Zoom links and refer to this guide to learn how to set security settings or download our Zoom/Google Hangouts Safety Poster
Teachers with older students (grades 5-12) should consider requiring authentication on meetings to ensure that only BPS accounts are allowed into their Zoom meetings. This is the strongest way to prevent unauthorized access to meetings and/or identify the person disrupting a meeting. Instructions for enabling this setting can be found here.

Student Who Start 10/1/20 In Person Priority (IPP)

In Person Priority (IPP), formerly referred to as "high needs" is a designated group of students identified by criteria that will start attending school in person on October 1, 2020 following their assigned A or B cohort. As a staff, once you have a student arriving in person for an A or B day, you must also be in the building to teach in person on that A or B day. All staff teaching this student must report at that time.
Students were identified for IPP in BPS based on the following criteria:

• Students who attend special education public day schools (McKinley, Carter, Horace Mann)
• Students with disabilities who learn in substantially separate classrooms
• Students with disabilities in inclusion classrooms with high needs, as defined by the PL3 in the student’s IEP
• Students with limited or interrupted formal education
• English learners who have an ELD Level of 1 or 2
• Students who are experiencing homelessness
• Students in the care of the Department of Children and Families

You can see if your student is listed for IPP by looking on SIS under the In Person Priority column. If the word "HIGH" is next to your student, your student is scheduled to come to the Curley in person on October 1,2020 (B Cohort) or October 5, 2020 (A Cohort). At this time, you cannot submit a student for the IPP list. Only students who have met the criteria by BPS will have IPP at this time. Please reach out to mohrenberger@bostonpublicschools.org with any questions regarding IPP.

Technology Updates

We are sending messages to families regarding chromebook distribution. A shipment has just come in so at present, we have approximately 100 chromebooks available to distribute. We will first be contacting the families that were identified by BPS as being in Phase 1. Distribution will be available Monday and Tuesday for pick up at the school. Families will also be told that if they are not able to come to the school on Monday or Tuesday to contact their child's homeroom teacher. If you hear from a family that requires delivery, please send an email to Pete, Kate and Dawn and we will arrange for delivery ASAP. We are expecting another delivery of chromebooks soon and will distribute them as soon as we can and don't forget to update our tracker. 

BPS Helpline 617-635-8873 - Please have families call the BPS Family helpline Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm for questions about technology and other resources available to BPS families.
Help is available in Arabic, Cape Verdean Creole, Chinese, French, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, Russian, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

Walkthrough

We conducted our first walkthrough of the building today as we prepare to safely open and welcome students. While there were many items on the list in place we are still missing important items that were negotiated in the BPS/BTU MOA. We will conduct another walkthrough next week to update everyone on our progress in securing these items. Please note that the walkthrough results were reported directly to the BTU.

ALL Staff Sign In/Sign Out Procedures - Effective starting Friday, Sept. 18, 2020

All BPS employees have been directed to use the following form to sign-in AND to sign-out each day that they are working; you will be expected to complete the form twice each day: once when you start your day, and once when you end your day. The form will use the timestamp to capture the date and time; in the event that you forget, there is an option to retroactively log a sign-in/out, where you will be asked to manually enter the date and time. For more information about this, please see the attached document entitled Remote Sign-In Procedure for BPS Staff. To make sure that you are in compliance with this directive, you will be required to sign in and out daily at the following link: Boston Public Schools - Sign-In/Sign-Out (SY20-21)

Beginning Monday, March 16th through Friday May 1st , students in Grades 3-5 will participate in an independent reading challenge. The Grade level that comes closest to reaching their Accelerated Reader Reading Goal will win a party of their choice, hosted by Ms. Grassa, and the rights to display the “Curl Up and Read, Curley” championship trophy! Results of the challenge will be posted weekly on a scoreboard in the Upper School main hallway. Family letters to send home, explaining the challenge, will be distributed this week. Boston Public Schools: Student Feedback Survey grades 3-8

The Curley K-8 School will be administering the Student Feedback Survey March 9th - March 27th for students in grades 3-8. Students will be randomly provided one of six versions of the MCIEA Culture & Climate Survey. Each survey contains 2/3 of the Culture & Climate questions and will take about 15 minutes to complete. Students will also take a survey about 2 randomly selected teachers. Each survey will take about 10 minutes to complete. As a result, students will need about 35 minutes to complete the entire survey.
How will students take the survey?
• All surveys are available online.
• Students will log-in with the Clever account.
• Students may use desktops, laptops, netbooks, Chromebooks, tablets and/or mobile devices to access the survey.
• All appropriate and available accommodations can be used to assist students with disabilities.
• Languages available: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Cape Verdean Creole, Haitian Creole, Somali, and Chinese.

Class Coverage

Teachers and paras will be responsible for submitting coverage in this form and they will be paid out monthly. If either Teachers or Para Professionals have questions or need support submitting this documentation they should speak to either Madeline or Kathy. 

SST

In order to submit a referral, please complete the google form. All materials can be found in the drive. Once a referral form is submitted, you will hear from a member of the SST team regarding next steps. 

Middle School Detention

Middle School Detention is every Tuesday from 3:15 - 4:15. Please use this link to record students assigned to detention. Students will earn detention for the following reasons:

· Refusal to turn in their cellphone

· Being in the hallways without a pass

· Arriving late to class without a pass

• The SPC has allotted each grade level $500 to put towards field trips; any questions should be send to treasurer@curleyk8.com.

World Down Syndrome Day

Did you know that people all over the world celebrate persons with Down Syndrome each year on March 21st? Trisomy 21, otherwise known as Down Syndrome is a genetic condition that affects chromosome 21. Help us celebrate our differences by wearing two mismatched colorful socks on Friday, March 20th. We are all unique! Let's celebrate our differences that make this world colorful by Rocking our Socks for Down Syndrome!

Reminder to staff: Please refrain from naming a student's disability. Not all students know that they have a disability! Steer away from statements like "Meaghan, we are celebrating you because you have Down Syndrome!" and stick with statements like "Curley cares about celebrating our differences!". Please respect families' personal decisions about discussing disabilities with their 

children.

The third math interim is scheduled to begin the week of March 23rd. This interim brings us really close to MCAS testing and there are school performances during the week so we will not be able to make any grade level scheduling changes. BPS 24/7 Respect Program

BPS will be implementing the 24/7 respect program in all 6th-grade classrooms during the week of March 9 through 13 of 2020. In an effort to address bias-based conduct and sexual misconduct at school and beyond, the Office of Equity has created a curriculum to help you discuss this topic with your students. Attached you will find the following items for the 24/7 Respect program.

• Guidance for English Learners produced by the Office of English Learners and the Office of Opportunity Gaps
• Guidance for working with diverse learners from the Office of Special Education

Willie Wonka School Performances

For this year’s Disney Musicals in Schools production, students in Grades 3, 4 and 5 will perform Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. School performances will take place on March 24 and 25 at 9:00 am and 1:45 pm. Homeroom teachers, please use this form to indicate your first, second and third choices for the performance you would like your students to attend. We will make every effort to give everyone their preferred choice. If you do not submit a form, your class will be scheduled for a performance time. Please submit forms by Monday, March 16. Use this form to recognize up to three of the students you work with who exhibit consistent or improved understanding of the Curley Cares rules as demonstrated by a specific deed, general conduct, overall academic perseverance and/or improvement, or some other form of participation.
With this in mind PLEASE take a moment to recognize students who are doing their best to support the Curley Cares way.

Our goal is to keep you as informed as possible and make sure you have the tools and resources you need in order to both talk with your students, staff, and families and keep your school community safe and healthy. BTU Vote

Dear Teachers and Paras,
We wanted to inform you that there will be a vote held next week, on Thursday, March 12th. The vote will determine if we have PD on January 4, 2021 or distribute the hours throughout the school year. Interim Updates

The third math interim is scheduled to begin the week of March 23rd. This interim brings us really close to MCAS testing and there are school performances during the week so we will not be able to make any grade level scheduling changes. BPS 24/7 Respect Program

BPS will be implementing the 24/7 respect program in all 6th-grade classrooms during the week of March 9 through 13 of 2020. In an effort to address bias-based conduct and sexual misconduct at school and beyond, the Office of Equity has created a curriculum to help you discuss this topic with your students. Attached you will find the following items for the 24/7 Respect program.

Save the Date! Curley Winter Social Dinner & Auction

Join the Curley community for an evening of grown-up fun at Bella Luna Restaurant on Thursday, March 19th from 6:00-9:00pm. Bid on great items donated by area businesses and Curley families and help raise money for enrichment programs, arts activities, field trips, and new technology at the Curley.
 Tickets are $25 each and include a pizza buffet dinner with salad. Cash bar.
 Childcare, provided by CASP, will be available upstairs at the Children’s Music Center of JP for $12 per child (ages 4 and up) and include pizza and veggies for dinner.

Willie Wonka School Performances

For this year’s Disney Musicals in Schools production, students in Grades 3, 4 and 5 will perform Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. School performances will take place on March 24 and 25 at 9:00 am and 1:45 pm. Homeroom teachers, please use this form to indicate your first, second and third choices for the performance you would like your students to attend. We will make every effort to give everyone their preferred choice. If you do not submit a form, your class will be scheduled for a performance time. Please submit forms by Monday, March 16. Thank you for your support of our production and we look forward to seeing you at the show!!

Home Basketball Games

We will have several home basketball games in the coming weeks. Students, staff and families all want to enjoy these opportunities. We have a plan to each games moving forward. If staff are agreeing to supervise students at the Basketball Game they must submit this form for EACH student by NOON on the day of the home game. The remaining home games are:

Staff are agreeing to remain with students leading up to the start of the game, during the game and ensuring they exit the building directly after the game. All spectators will watch from the balcony and will enter from the 2nd Floor. Boston Public Schools: Student Feedback Survey grades 3-8

The Curley K-8 School will be administering the Student Feedback Survey March 9th - March 27th for students in grades 3-8. Students will be randomly provided one of six versions of the MCIEA Culture & Climate Survey. Each survey contains 2/3 of the Culture & Climate questions and will take about 15 minutes to complete. Students will also take a survey about 2 randomly selected teachers. Each survey will take about 10 minutes to complete. As a result, students will need about 35 minutes to complete the entire survey.
How will students take the survey?
• All surveys are available online.
• Students will log-in with the Clever account.
• Students may use desktops, laptops, netbooks, Chromebooks, tablets and/or mobile devices to access the survey.
• All appropriate and available accommodations can be used to assist students with disabilities.
• Languages available: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Cape Verdean Creole, Haitian Creole, Somali, and Chinese.

Come represent your grade band as we update the “Big Six” Lessons. This year we implemented our draft of the “Big Six” lessons. Now, as we revisit the lessons, we need your feedback to ensure the lessons support teacher needs and students’ understanding and growth. Middle School Detention

Middle School Detention is every Tuesday from 3:15 - 4:15. Please use this link to record students assigned to detention. Students will earn detention for the following reasons:

All field trips requests should be submitted in the following way, check out this powerpoint for additional information on the steps.

• Fill out electronic form at least 2 weeks in advance. This link will be available in the blog daily. Field Trip Request Form
• Print your form submission. 
• Email list of students attending to nurses. 
• Get nurse and cafeteria signature at least 2 weeks in advance. They can sign anywhere at the bottom of your page. 
• Turn in to either main office. 
• Pass out permission slips and have students return. (English p.12, Other Languages)
• The SPC has allotted each grade level $500 to put towards field trips; any questions should be send to treasurer@curleyk8.com.

Shout out to our Attendance Team: Jessica Burque, Sugeily Santos, April Pumphret, Cristina Silva, Tori Weisman, Katie Kovacovich and George Physic. Yesterday they were presented with the Silver Attendance Award for reducing Chronic Absenteeism. This is one of the hard attendance data points to reduce and attendance is a predictor for students graduating on time from high school starting in Kindergarten! Thank you for your efforts and the life-long impact you are having on our community!

The schedule was prepared to allow us to maintain optimal testing conditions, keep P & D's, and pull as many staff as possible to meet all the needs of our students during testing. Please go over the schedule with your team and make sure you note all the changes in the Master Schedule during the testing window. Please contact Mr. Diaz if you have any questions or concerns.

 

End-of-Year Celebration honoring the Retirees

Later sunsets are a reminder that the end of the year is approaching quickly! We are planning an end-of-year party in early June to honor our retirees and celebrate our hard work all year. Grade 3-5 Independent Reading Challenge

Curl Up and Read, Curley!
Beginning Monday, March 16th through Friday May 1st , students in Grades 3-5 will participate in an independent reading challenge. The Grade level that comes closest to reaching their Accelerated Reader Reading Goal will win a party of their choice, hosted by Ms. Grassa, and the rights to display the “Curl Up and Read, Curley” championship trophy! Results of the challenge will be posted weekly on a scoreboard in the Upper School main hallway. Family letters to send home, explaining the challenge, will be distributed this week.
