Shout Out

Shout out to Rachel and Sam Childers for taking the initiative to organize the unruly Lost and Found area in the Lower School. Your willingness to take on this huge project, allowing others to more easily locate missing coats, gloves hats, mittens and more is greatly appreciated by all, and is a great example of "Curley Cares" in action!

BPS Operations Information

The forecast is calling for some heavy winds and significant rain (possible snow) from Thursday night - Saturday. Custodians have been instructed to check roof drains, exterior drains, catch basins, windows, etc. today before the storm hits. We ask you to please reach out to your food service staff, teachers, and school staff for their help in making sure all windows are secure. This could be particularly troublesome with the warm weather today. Small staff bathroom windows are areas we typically have issues with - they seem to be missed or forgotten. Thanks everyone for your attention to this - have a great rest of the week!

Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) materials are now available in Ms. Arroyo’s room in the upper school. Lessons and books from the Blue kit (Levels C-N) and Red kit (Levels L-Q) may be borrowed to use as part of your intervention instruction for students reading below grade level. These materials are most effective when used in addition to daily guided reading lessons.
Ms. Arroyo uses this space for small group instruction daily, so please keep in mind the following schedule when picking up or returning materials. You can access materials during the following times:

Monday: 8:15 - 9:45, 10:45 - 11:10, 12:45 - 2:10

City Year Grades 3-8

City Year would like to introduce you to an SEL initiative that invites students to recognize each other for showing that “Curley Cares.” All students in grades 3-8 are eligible to participate. The initiative asks students, alongside City Year AmeriCorps members, to act as “detectives” on the lookout to catch students around the school caring. A poster with pull-off tabs attached to its bottom will hang in every participating classroom. When students or a City Year see a classmate “caring,” and with teacher approval, they can rip off a tab, write the name and grade of the student who was caught caring, and place the filled-out tab in the manila envelope located next to the poster. Students should use Curley values (i.e. “I care about myself, my classmates, and my school”) to determine whether or not a student should receive a tab. We are asking teachers to introduce the initiative to participating classrooms, grades 3-8, the week of February 26th so students are prepared to start their search for caring classmates by March 5th. Guidelines both for students and teachers could be found here. City Year will collect and count all tabs by March 22nd. Recognized students will be entered into a raffle for various prizes, like a brand new backpack. We will announce raffle prize winners the week of March 26th. Shout out to Kate Davis for always being willing to share her technological expertise to help out colleagues, even when it means that she must stop her own planning to provide assistance. Kate’s deep knowledge of Google Docs and general computer savvy are so appreciated, as is her patience in helping us all develop and sharpen our 21st century skills!

Shout out to Azariah Mamousette for setting a new 10 & under NE and RES 50 freestyle record! Azariah is the first male swimmer in NE to drop under the 26 second mark! His time of 25.96 breaks his own NE record of 26.37 set in December and the RES record of 26.31 set by Brian Fiske back in 1996!

Shout out to Nubea Martorell for joining our team as a new K1 Paraprofessional! You all may know Nubea since she has worked for CASP for several years as our K1 teacher as well as delivered our fruits and vegetables twice per week for the last two school years.

Shout out to Maria Amy-Moreno and Nina Wessen for leading the middle school dance on the Friday before vacation! The students truly look forward to this every year!

Shout out to Jesse Cardoso, Emanuela Alves, Adrian Ward-Jackson, Kim Taylor Knight, Shawn Paulling, Sandra Samuel, BalletROX, Bashir Kayou, Ms. Brown and Ms. Solomon for leading the Black History Month Performance on Friday before vacation. Our Middle Schoolers and 2nd graders shined on stage and the messages shared through the performances were moving for the audience. Thank you for your efforts!

Shout out to Cinthia Aguasvivas for her kind nature, hardworking attitude and love of her students and colleagues. Thank you for all you do each and everyday for our school.

Shout out to Kayla working as an intern in the special education office who goes above and beyond each day. She voluntarily pulls targeted social skills groups and helps problem solve with students to help improve their interactions with peers. Thank you for being so wonderful!

Girls on the Run

This spring we will bring back Girls on the Run at the Curley! The season will begin the week of March 20th. The culminating 5K takes place on June 9th. We need coaches! Practices will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:00 on the playing field. If you want to hear more about the coaching experience, talk to Meg Nason, Jenni Craman, Laura Shea, or Kelly Van Clief who coached our last GOTR team. Contact Meg Nason to join the team this spring.

Middle School Valentine's Dance

The Valentines Dance coming on Feb 16th. The dance will be used to fundraise for buses for Canobie Lake. For the dance, we are asking for your help. Please contact Nina Wessen and Maria Amy-Moreno with questions.

You can help us in the following ways:

• Dance admittance will be $3. Bracelets will be in your mailboxes by the week of Feb 12th. Please collect money and pass out bracelets on Friday, Feb. 16. If you would like, please drop off money and the amount fundraised to Nina in 209 and I can collect and give the money to Katie. 
• We are selling water bottles for $1 to further fundraise for Canobie. WE NEED YOUR HELP TO TELL STUDENTS THAT WATER WILL BE SOLD AT THE DANCE FOR $1. 
• There is a strict rule that students MAY NOT RUN in the gym during the dance. If caught running, students will be asked to leave. (We had a safety issue that occurred at the last dance). 
• We need more active supervisors during the dance. Please actively supervise and monitor the students during this time. We want to ensure the safety of our students and of the equipments. 
• Lastly, we will pass out music forms to all teachers on Monday. Please take the time to pass out these forms to your students and have them write in 1-2 appropriate songs that they would like to hear at the dance. We will not necessarily play every single song, but we will attempt to do so if the song is appropriate.

Shout out to Ms. Alves for spending extra time with a student in need and taking the time to understand the student's perspectives and make sure he felt cared for and supported.

Shout out to Emily Beck, Joanne Mylett, Noraa Ricketts, and Rose Rodriguez for hosting teachers from China and India, who spent time observing lessons in their classrooms. Our guests learned a lot and were very appreciative of the warm welcome they received from everyone.

Students should use Curley values (i.e. “I care about myself, my classmates, and my school”) to determine whether or not a student should receive a tab. The Valentines Dance coming on Feb 16th. The dance will be used to fundraise for buses for Canobie Lake. For the dance, we are asking for your help. Please contact Nina Wessen and Maria Amy-Moreno with questions.

You can help us in the following ways:

• Dance admittance will be $3. Bracelets will be in your mailboxes by the week of Feb 12th. Please collect money and pass out bracelets on Friday, Feb. 16. If you would like, please drop off money and the amount fundraised to Nina in 209 and I can collect and give the money to Katie. 
• We are selling water bottles for $1 to further fundraise for Canobie. WE NEED YOUR HELP TO TELL STUDENTS THAT WATER WILL BE SOLD AT THE DANCE FOR $1. 
• There is a strict rule that students MAY NOT RUN in the gym during the dance. If caught running, students will be asked to leave. (We had a safety issue that occurred at the last dance). 
• We need more active supervisors during the dance. Please actively supervise and monitor the students during this time. We want to ensure the safety of our students and of the equipments. 
• Lastly, we will pass out music forms to all teachers on Monday. Please take the time to pass out these forms to your students and have them write in 1-2 appropriate songs that they would like to hear at the dance. Shout out to the Curley Attendance Team for being recognized yesterday at the SEL conference for having "GOLD" attendance. Our attendance team has worked hard to improve attendance outcomes, communicate with students, created plans that support families and collaborated with teacher to get students to school each day! Nominations Open - Boston Educator of the Year

The City of Boston, BPS, and the BTU invite our stakeholders to nominate exceptional educators and to honor their work and dedication through the 2018 Boston Educator of the Year Award. Bulletin Boards Updated by Friday, February 9th 

Bulletin boards communicate the values of our school. Bulletin boards are a window into our classrooms that allow us to share the teaching and learning happening inside. Bulletin boards send a message to students that their work is important and valued here. Please update your bulletin board by Friday, February 9th. You must also include the Curley template which describes the learning your students are doing that links to the instructional focus.

CPT at a Glance

Thanks to the staff who have provided feedback we will have a weekly update about what should be covered at CPT. The CPT at a Glance document will be updated each week. Lindsey Morgan will support teams in grades 3-8 on analyzing STAR reading data. 

K2, 1st and 2nd Grade

The middle of the year testing window is open from January 22nd to March 2nd. If you have running records that show a student is reading on or above your grade's instructional level benchmark, you do not need to do the BAS with them. If a student is reading below the instructional level benchmark, you need to do the BAS to find the highest instructional level and their hard level.
The levels are as follows:
K2 - on or above instructional C
1st grade - on or above instructional G
2nd grade - on or above instructional L
