Shout Out

Shout out to Jenn Clark on the birth of her baby boy, Everett Adam Clark! Everett was born on March 16th and weighed 8lbs 8oz. Jenn and Everett are both doing well! Congrats!

Shout out to Hadley Keohane for being a leader in her classroom, following student Behavior Support Plans, consulting with colleagues and seeking feedback to improve her practice.  Your colleagues in Room 110 and Strand supervisors appreciate you!

Shout out Bianca Guerrero, Pat Freeman, and Alberto Guerrero for following the How To Offer Help Protocol this afternoon.  The educators saw that a student was engaging in challenging behavior but kept their distance and subtly offered help to the staff working with the student without providing additional attention to the situation.  Additional shout out to Corey Edmiston for assisting in clearing the hallway for a student transitioning.  He was able to neutrally redirect others to clear a path, keeping others safe, but without providing unnecessary attention.  Way to be a team!

Shout out to Meg Nason, Jenni Craman, Helenia Solomini and Laura Shea for coming to school on a day off to interview candidates for our open K2 position. Early childhood teaching matters and sets the foundation for the rest of a student's life. Thanks!

Winter Term Report Card Grading Window for Grades 1-5

The winter grading window for students in grades 1-5 is will open from March 7th to March 24th. Please refer to the materials below for instructions on entering grades. Reminder: After entering or editing grades in the scores tab, teachers must click Post Grades to write the grades to the report cards. Grades will be saved as you enter them but they will not appear on the report cards until you click Post Grades.

Red Jacket Weekend 2016

Each year in September, City Year corps members and staff kick off their year of service with a large scale service day benefiting a school in our communities. We are very excited to announce that next year, the Curley K-8 will be the host and beneficiary of this event. On a Saturday in September, around 750 volunteers from the City Year community will be coming out to the Curley and the surrounding community for a day of volunteering that will be organized by a specialized team from City Year. Projects for this type of event can include painting, murals, organization, landscaping, light construction and the creation of resources for students and teachers.   Your input and feedback is essential for us to best align our projects with the needs of the school and we greatly appreciate you for taking the time to answer the questions using this link. The Curley School Parent Council (SPC) will be hosting their Annual Silent Auction at Canary Square on Tuesday, March 29th and would like to extend an invite to all staff and their friends and family. If you are interested in donating a prize to the auction please contact Molly Brigham by February 22nd at mollykbrigham@gmail.com. In the past some staff have donated an afternoon with their teacher to get an ice cream at JP Licks, Principal for the Day, lunch with your teacher, etc... The SPC is open to any of your ideas and really appreciates your time (and the students love the prizes). The money raised from the Silent Auction goes to directly supporting our school such as CMCB, BalletROX, Arts supplies, science supplies, staff luncheon, Chromebooks etc...

Movie Night

On Wednesday, Mar. 16th PACE will hold a fundraiser. It is a family movie night from 5-7pm in the Upper School Auditorium. Tickets are $3 and will be sold at the door on the Centre Street entrance. All ages are welcome as long as children are accompanied by an adult and the ticket price will include water and popcorn. Our Hint about the Movie is... When I'm feeling happy, angry, scared, or sad I can watch this Oscar winning animated feature film and it is sure to make me feel glad.

Adult Dance Class

Ms. Taylor has agreed to let us use her room on Tuesdays from 2:45 to 3:30 to dance for fun. She will be running the warm up/cool down part of it. I see this as a way of relaxing, exercising and having fun for the staff. More details to come. First dance for fun will be Tuesday, March 15th at 2:45.

Curley Lion Dance and Kung Fu Team

The Curley Lion Dance and Kung Fu team will be starting practice on Wednesdays 2:45 at the Pershing Road School Yard. The class will be pay by donation. The class is geared toward older children but everyone willing to follow along is welcome to do so. We will cover some basic meditation, stances for strengthening and flexibility, Kung Fu moves for self defense, Lion Dance, drumming, Tai Chi exercises for rest, relaxation and health, and we will also sing a Kung Fu song for the purpose of group dynamics and self affirmation. The short term goal is to perform in the Wake Up the Earth Parade and to foster teamwork through practicing together and doing that parade together. The Long term goal is participate in performances as a stand alone team, as well as with other teams throughout Boston. The even longer term goal is for students from this class to teach the younger children at the Curley what they have learned, and perhaps to teach other schools in the area as well. Student ID Numbers

As part of the corrective action plan of the DESE Administrative Review, the district is required to provide documentation of student identification to ensure accurate accountability of each meal served. Students are required to learn their six digit BPS ID number. We are are working with the cafeteria staff to ensure a smooth implementation of this mandate. Thus, before your students go to lunch tomorrow:

• Please write your students ID numbers in a card or sticky note
• In the next few days, help them memorize their ID numbers 
• Please send and pick up your students on time to ensure that the cafeteria workers have time to input the student numbers in the system 

Eventually, students will be given a card with a bar code to swipe or enter their information on a pin pad after they get their food. Thank you for you for cooperation see Mr. Diaz if you have any questions.

Basketball

We are excited to have a girls and boys middle school basketball team here at school. We know students want to cheer on their peers however students can only attend the game with an adult such as staff, partner (Tenacity or City Year) or parent/guardian. Once the game is over the adult should walk the child to exit the building. This assures that safety of all students during the afternoon hours.

Teach Plus Courses

Are you looking to earn additional PDPs this spring? Don't miss the chance to finish the school year strong and be a part of teacher-led PD. Courses are specific to your grade level and content areas. Each course is free and offers the opportunity to earn 15 PDPs or graduate credit from UMASS Boston. Plus, free dinner, because no one learns well on an empty stomach. Courses run for 5 weeks from March to early April and cover a wide range of topics. Register now on My Learning Plan or through the Teach Plus website.

AWC Announcement

Many of you may have already heard but I wanted to take the time to clarify the statement. 

We will increase opportunities for students who have not been identified through testing to participate in rigorous learning experiences typically found in AWC classrooms. These modifications will include:

1. AWC for all - using the same curricular materials, differentiation strategies, and classroom community building strategies with all 4th graders in all 4th grade classrooms in your school. 
2. Heterogeneous grouping of all students in grade 4 with common curriculum as described above.
3. Flexible grouping: pulling additional students into the various classroom for just part of the day; for example just during the literacy or math.

We will have further discussion around this transition in the coming weeks. This will only impact grade 4 next year but we plan to roll it up a year at a time moving forward. All of our AWC teachers will continue teaching in their jobs but they will not lead an exclusive AWC homeroom. There will also be families with questions and I am more than happy to communicate with them as well.

Shout out to the Health and Wellness Committee for leading an Environmental Walk Thru of our school. Teachers, parents, students, parents and district staff were all present and collecting data around recycling, nutrition, environment and bathrooms. The Curley School Parent Council (SPC) will be hosting their Annual Silent Auction at Canary Square on Tuesday, March 29th and would like to extend an invite to all staff and their friends and family. If you are interested in donating a prize to the auction please contact Molly Brigham by February 22nd at mollykbrigham@gmail.com. In the past some staff have donated an afternoon with their teacher to get an ice cream at JP Licks, Principal for the Day, lunch with your teacher, etc... The SPC is open to any of your ideas and really appreciates your time (and the students love the prizes). Our yearly uniform surveys will go home with students tomorrow in both Spanish and English. We are asking staff to collect these forms and encourage students to return them. Environmental Walk Thru

Health and Wellness: Join Us! Volunteers Wanted for K-8 Environmental Health Walk-through! The Curley Health and Wellness Committee will be conducting an

Environmental Walk-through of the Curley K-8 in Jamaica Plain, MA on

Curley Basketball

Our basketball season will begin this week with home games on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. The girls will play at 3:30pm and the boys will play at 4:30pm. Go Flying Lions!

Adult Dance Class

Ms. Taylor has agreed to let us use her room on Tuesdays from 2:45 to 3:30 to dance for fun. She will be running the warm up/cool down part of it. I see this as a way of relaxing, exercising and having fun for the staff. More details to come. First dance for fun will be Tuesday March 1st at 2:45.

School Climate Team

Red Jacket Weekend 2016

Each year in September, City Year corps members and staff kick off their year of service with a large scale service day benefiting a school in our communities. We are very excited to announce that next year, the Curley K-8 will be the host and beneficiary of this event. On a Saturday in September, around 750 volunteers from the City Year community will be coming out to the Curley and the surrounding community for a day of volunteering that will be organized by a specialized team from City Year. Projects for this type of event can include painting, murals, organization, landscaping, light construction and the creation of resources for students and teachers.   Your input and feedback is essential for us to best align our projects with the needs of the school and we greatly appreciate you for taking the time to answer the questions using this link. The winter benchmark window is now open through February 26th. Teachers in K2-2 should administer the BAS for students who are reading below the current grade level instructional expectations. Instructional level expectations for the middle of the year are as follows: Kindergarten - C, Grade 1 - G, Grade 2 - L. It is expected that teachers will change the data board at the end of this window to assure it reflects the most up to date data.

Shout out to all staff! Tomorrow marks the 100th Day of School this year! Everyone has been working incredibly hard and our students are making progress every day! Thank you for your tireless work on behalf of all our students!

Shout out to Curley staff who previously taught Evan Thomson (BLS) and Angel Tejeda (Brighton High). The families reached out to thank the Curley for their support in educating these boys both of whom received the prestigious Posse Scholarship to college next year. Please read the excerpt from the parent: The Posse is a 27-year-old program that provides full scholarships to inner-city kids with “extraordinary academic and leadership potential”. This year’s Bucknell Posse comprises 10 kids out of 1,400 Greater Boston applicants. (There are Posses of Boston kids going to Hamilton, Union, Bryn Mawr, Dennison and Centre Colleges as well.) Learning lessons: 

1. Glow with Curley Pride - I’m sure it is a rare feat that the same K-8 school produces two Posse Scholars in the same year; 
2. Credit the BPS - you don’t have to go to BLS, or one of the other exam schools, to be a high achiever and be recognized as such; and 
3. Parents - Don’t forget to check out the Posse program for your kids late in their junior year. It is awe-inspiring.

Shout out to Sara Silverstein, Lindsey Wright, Kate Davis, Traka Smith and Laura Shea for opening their classrooms to UP Academy Holland Charter School this morning. The school heard positive things about our SAR program and asked to come and observe. They also wanted to see some of the inclusion work we have done once they arrived. The visitors raved about this school from the bright cheery hallways that celebrated student work, positive interactions between adults and students, level or rigor in classrooms, well behaved children and clear Curley School Pride (Curley Cares). UP Teachers left with many ideas they wanted to bring back and implement in their school. Thank you for opening your classrooms the day after break and for helping other schools learn!

Uniform Survey

Our yearly uniform surveys will go home with students tomorrow in both Spanish and English. We are asking staff to collect these forms and encourage students to return them. We are also asking staff to complete these forms for feedback either on paper or online http://goo.gl/forms/YVgo87NEZy. Please bring all completed forms to Madeline or Kathy by 3/3/16.

Teach Plus Courses

Teach Plus courses are returning this spring and we strongly encourage staff to participate. The courses being offered at the Curley specifically focus on areas we are discussing with the ILT and align with our school goals and the Instructional Focus (Teachers will vary demands and resources to optimize challenge in writing task to support students in expressing a clear, organized idea).

Curley staff will be given preference for seats in courses offered at our school and we hope you take advantage of this benefit - either individually or as a team. Jumpathon

Mr. Righini will lead the Jumpathon on Feb. 23rd from 10:30-11:30am in lower gym, students in grades 1-6 can raise money for the American Heart Association. This year we are being sponsored by a company called ARCLIGHT. They are donating $250 for Physical Education supplies. See Mr. R for forms and details.

BAS Testing K-2

The winter benchmark window is now open through February 26th. Teachers in K2-2 should administer the BAS for students who are reading below the current grade level instructional expectations. Instructional level expectations for the middle of the year are as follows: Kindergarten - C, Grade 1 - G, Grade 2 - L. It is expected that teachers will change the data board at the end of this window to assure it reflects the most up to date data.
