Shout Out

Shout out to Ms Beck for taking time to keep a student connected to school and feeling like a part of the community during his absence.

Shout out to Tenacity and all our students who participated in the 4th Annual Poetry Slam on Friday afternoon at Bella Luna. Our Middle Schoolers who participated were Jianelys Maldonado (decima poem), Jayshawn Brooks (free verse), Keerah Ulysses and Kayla Valdez (free verse). For trimester 1 students studied poetry and each wrote original poems to recite. Jianelys won first place in the decima category! The students worked so hard on practicing and writing these poems. Here is the award winning poem:

• 1-2 artifacts for I.B.2 Adjustments to Practice
• 1-2 artifacts for II. D. 2 High Expectations)
• 5-10 total artifacts with thorough explanations of each item uploaded and how it connects to the goal or standard

7th/8th Grade Showcase

The students in 7A, 7B, 7C, 8A, and 8B are preparing digital portfolios to share with visitors at our event on Wednesday from 9:30-10:30am. We would love to have as many attendees as possible! Attendees will meet in the 7th/8th grade hallway (outside of room 218) at 9:30 and adults will be given a few questions to ask individual students as they look at portfolios. Please RSVP to opeters@bostonpublicschools.org so we can have a general idea of how many people to expect.

Class Coverage Payment DUE WEDNESDAY 11/27

Class coverage & missed PD hours are now due for the month of November. Please submit to Madeline and Kathy by 12:30pm on Wednesday, November 27th.

Early Release 11/27

Wednesday, November 27 is an early release day for students. Please review the schedule for that day, including the times for lunch and recess. Please note that the student dismissal will be at 12:30 pm, which is earlier than in past years. If you have questions or conflicts, please reach out to David Diaz. We are asking you to remind families of this change since there will be NO after school programming on this day.

Bulletin Boards

All Bulletin Boards must be updated by Wednesday, November 27th.  All bulletin boards should have the Curley template posted with it. Please be mindful that the boards should have grade level work posted that connects to a learning standard. This is a perfect time to update board prior to families attending a Family Engagement event. This is a great project for a student teacher and/or a set of responsible students. It is important that things are stapled up in all corners. Please note that you can share whole group learning (number talk, sample of writing process, response to reading etc....) The work does have to be perfect we prefer authenticity. Bulletin Boards make our hallways feel warm and welcoming and help us celebrate our students.

Preference Sheets

We are beginning the planning process for SY 2020-21 and would like to take into consideration teacher preferences for next year. We are sending these out earlier than the schedule required by the contract so that we can better prepare for the budget process and for meeting the needs of our students for next year.  Please fill out the attached form to indicate your preferences for SY 2020-21. Please complete by Friday, December 6, 2019.

Secret Snowman returns to the Curley!

The Secret Snowman gift exchange will again be held throughout the month of December.

Each week you will get a chance (or chances!) to surprise your Secret Snowman with a small treat. In total, money spent on your gifts should NOT exceed $25 throughout the entire gift exchange. The themes are only suggestions, we really just want you to have fun with it!!! Gifts can be dropped off any time during the day or delivered by another staff-member (or even a student). Reveal yourself to your Secret Snowman upon delivering your last gift during the final week of the exchange.

Ava Untermyer (Ms. U) will lead a Staff Yoga class for the Curley Team! Enjoy relaxing, connecting to your body and cultivating gratitude during the holiday season.

- Yoga mats provided
- Wear clothes that you feel comfortable moving in (leggings, sweatpants etc.)

ELA Interim 2

Please find the link for the ELA Interim 2 schedule here ELA Interim 2. The link includes instructions for administering the interim, the schedule, and proctor lists and locations. The access codes are not yet available, but will be included in the document as soon as they are. In addition, an inventory of the chrome carts and their locations is being updated. Curley Cares Climate Lesson Feedback

The Climate Team is looking for feedback in relation to how the implementation of the eight (8) Curley Cares Climate lessons went in your classrooms. Your feedback will be anonymous. Winter Coat Drive

With temperatures continuing to drop, the guidance team is making finding each student a winter coat before the holiday break a priority. While the SPC coat drive is hugely helpful towards this aim, we recognize that the two students per class limit might make it difficult to meet our goal. We are therefore working with a community partner to accumulate additional coats.

If you have a student who might need a coat who has not already turned in a coat drive form, please add them to the Google doc below so that we are able to get him/her one!

BIMAS is back! 

The Behavior Intervention Monitoring Assessment System (BIMAS) is a measure of social, emotional and behavioral functioning in children and adolescents ages 5 to 18 years. It includes 34 change-sensitive items that are used for universal screening of behavioral health and for assessing response to intervention.  Linked is the updated Powerpoint that will discussed in your CPT. Opt out letters will go out 10/17 and the window opens on 10/21. THE BIMAS COMPETITION IS ALSO BACK! First two grades to 100% completion win a special breakfast from climate! Middle School Detention

Middle School Detention is every Tuesday from 3:15 - 4:15. Please use this link to record students assigned to detention. Students will earn detention for the following reasons:

· Refusal to turn in their cellphone

· Being in the hallways without a pass

· Arriving late to class without a pass

• Fill out electronic form at least 2 weeks in advance. This link will be available in the blog daily. Field Trip Request Form
• Print your form submission. 
• Email list of students attending to nurses. 
• Get nurse and cafeteria signature at least 2 weeks in advance. They can sign anywhere at the bottom of your page. 
• Turn in to either main office. 
• Pass out permission slips and have students return. (English p.12, Other Languages)
• The SPC has allotted each grade level $500 to put towards field trips; any questions should be send to treasurer@curleyk8.com.

Supporting Colleagues Addressing Difficult Behaviors

As a school with a population of students with diverse needs, we have students who demonstrate challenging behaviors. Often these behaviors happen in common areas of our school. In the midst of a tantrum, a child's behavior can look unsafe or overwhelming and when we see a teacher in a challenging situation, our first instinct is to offer help or support in some way. Although intentions are good, typically adding another adult to the situation who is not familiar with the child or the child’s behavior plan, can cause more harm to the situation than help.

As we build our best practices for supporting all students at the Curley, we would like to create a culture where the lead teacher will ask for support when he/she needs it. The lead teacher will give you (the supporting adult) a specific task (i.e. please help my class walk down the hall). If you think a teacher needs support and has not asked, you can check in by making eye contact. Please do not speak to or interact with the child. Some behaviors are increased by adult attention and for some children withholding attention is part of a treatment plan. If a teacher does not need your support, ignore the situation and instruct your students to do so as well. We encourage you to follow up at a later time to further discuss a situation.

Para Professional Technology Course

BPS & BTU are offering two hours training in Google for Paraprofessionals after school. As of now, there are three locations: Charles H. Taylor Elementary, Curley k-8 School, and the JF Condon. ACCESS Testing

Staff, it is that time of year again to prepare for ACCESS: This year all teachers need to retrain for administering the test. You will need to log into to www.wida.us, read the information and take a quiz for each section you need to take. You must score at least 80% on the section in order to be certified to administer the test. All students grade 1-8 will be taking the test on-line. Grades 1-3 will take the writing section on paper.
New Staff or those who did not takes the training last year.

• You will need to create an account on www.wida.us using username Massachusetts, password patriot. Create an account and follow the steps below. 

All Staff
• Teachers in Kindergarten: sign into www.wida.us your account and take the Kindergarten training module and quiz.
• Teachers in Grades 1-8: sign into www.wida.us and take the online administration test.
• All teachers that have or service students that are ACCESS ALT will need to sign into their account and take the testing listed above as well as the Alternate ACCESS quiz.
• Any non-teaching staff and administrators need to take kindergarten, speaking 1-6, paper and online. Once you have taken and passed the quizzes please bring in the completed certification to Kathy or Madeline by Friday January 4th 2018.

It is that time again! Families will be choosing schools for SY 2019-2020. We will host three events here at Curley for perspective families. Current Curley families will support these three events and provide guided tours throughout the building.

Artifacts

Please be sure to upload your artifacts on EDFS by Friday, December 21st. You should upload 1-2 artifacts for each goal (two goals) AND each standard (four standards) for a total of 6-12 artifacts. SLG and PPG - Upload your tracker of student conferences with your focus student & evidence of relationship building with the focus students

Standard I - Upload a Unit Plan created with your team and a sample of student work

Standard II - Upload evidence of differentiation (or modification if applicable) and a sample of students work to match this

November, 2018 Curley Cares Student Awards

The next Curley Cares assembly of the 2018-2019 school year will be held in Friday, November 30, 2018. Curley Cares awards are intended to reinforce positive student behaviors in support of the Curley Cares rules and the expectation/hope is that every Curley K8 student should earn at least one award each year. Throughout the year, reach out to members of your grade-level team, paras, specialists, and other staff to help try and make this happen. With this in mind PLEASE take a moment to recognize students who are doing their best to support the Curley Cares way.
Please use the NOVEMBER 2018 FORM to submit student names so they may receive an award at our Friday, November 30, 2018 Curley Shares assemblies. You may reference the 1819_CurleyCaresStudentRecipients list to see the names of students who have already received awards this year. Please SUBMIT awards by 4:00pm Tuesday, November 27, 2018.

Shout out to K2 and 3rd grade for being the first teams to fully complete the BIMAS! The Climate Team thanks you and you all should look forward to a treat soon.

Shout out to Carolyn Silva-Sanchez for reaching out to offer advice and encouragement in an area she heard I was struggling in. It felt really good to be supported by a colleague who I don't often work with!


Shout out to Ms. McDavitt. She welcomed us on Friday when we couldn't stay in our classroom and our classes had a really great day learning together!

Shout out to Helenia Solomini for being flexible one Friday in the bad weather! Thanks for staying calm and putting your students first!

Shout out to Lindsey Morgan, Kristen Mitchell, and all of the staff in her classroom for supporting me with a tough situation on Friday morning. I am so appreciative of you all!!Shout out today to John DePalm who spent his planning period leading a rhythm circle with Ms. McDavitt's class. The kids loved seeing how talented their gym teacher was and were totally engaged. It was a wonderful spontaneous collaboration. Check out the video clips here too!

Shout out to Eileen Cronin and Lisa Portadin for leading a planning day for all middle school ELA teachers. it was great to step away and have time to plan as colleagues as we kick off a new curriculum in Term 2! Thanks!

Shout out to the students from 5D for piloting the 'No More Bullying' Program for MGH! The students did an amazing job learning about responsibility, compassion, self-control, and integrity this week and practicing these behaviors with our special guest Penny the therapy dog! The students made our classroom a calm and peaceful place for Penny to relax and feel comfortable!

In the midst of a tantrum, a child's behavior can look unsafe or overwhelming and when we see a teacher in a challenging situation, our first instinct is to offer help or support in some way. Although intentions are good, typically adding another adult to the situation who is not familiar with the child or the child’s behavior plan, can cause more harm to the situation than help.

As we build our best practices for supporting all students at the Curley, we would like to create a culture where the lead teacher will ask for support when he/she needs it. The lead teacher will give you (the supporting adult) a specific task (i.e. please help my class walk down the hall). If you think a teacher needs support and has not asked, you can check in by making eye contact. Please do not speak to or interact with the child. Some behaviors are increased by adult attention and for some children withholding attention is part of a treatment plan. If a teacher does not need your support, ignore the situation and instruct your students to do so as well. We encourage you to follow up at a later time to further discuss a situation.

Para Professional Technology Course

BPS & BTU are offering two hours training in Google for Paraprofessionals after school. As of now, there are three locations: Charles H. Taylor Elementary, Curley k-8 School, and the JF Condon. ACCESS Testing

Staff, it is that time of year again to prepare for ACCESS: This year all teachers need to retrain for administering the test. You will need to log into to www.wida.us, read the information and take a quiz for each section you need to take. You must score at least 80% on the section in order to be certified to administer the test. All students grade 1-8 will be taking the test on-line. Grades 1-3 will take the writing section on paper.
New Staff or those who did not takes the training last year.

• You will need to create an account on www.wida.us using username Massachusetts, password patriot. Create an account and follow the steps below. 

All Staff
• Teachers in Kindergarten: sign into www.wida.us your account and take the Kindergarten training module and quiz.
• Teachers in Grades 1-8: sign into www.wida.us and take the online administration test.
• All teachers that have or service students that are ACCESS ALT will need to sign into their account and take the testing listed above as well as the Alternate ACCESS quiz.
• Any non-teaching staff and administrators need to take kindergarten, speaking 1-6, paper and online. Once you have taken and passed the quizzes please bring in the completed certification to Kathy or Madeline by Friday January 4th 2018.

Preference Sheets

We are beginning the planning process for SY 2019-20 and would like to take into consideration teacher preferences for next year. We are sending these out earlier than the schedule required by the contract so that we can better prepare for the budget process and for meeting the needs of our students for next year. We anticipate that the Curley will have the same grade configuration as this year. Please fill out the attached form to indicate your preferences for SY 2019-20. Please complete by Friday, November 30, 2018.

School Preview Time

It is that time again! Families will be choosing schools for SY 2019-2020. We will host three events here at Curley for perspective families. Current Curley families will support these three events and provide guided tours throughout the building.

Artifacts

Please be sure to upload your artifacts on EDFS by Friday, December 21st. You should upload 1-2 artifacts for each goal (two goals) AND each standard (four standards) for a total of 6-12 artifacts. SLG and PPG - Upload your tracker of student conferences with your focus student & evidence of relationship building with the focus students

Standard I - Upload a Unit Plan created with your team and a sample of student work

Standard II - Upload evidence of differentiation (or modification if applicable) and a sample of students work to match this

November, 2018 Curley Cares Student Awards

The next Curley Cares assembly of the 2018-2019 school year will be held in Friday, November 30, 2018. Curley Cares awards are intended to reinforce positive student behaviors in support of the Curley Cares rules and the expectation/hope is that every Curley K8 student should earn at least one award each year. Throughout the year, reach out to members of your grade-level team, paras, specialists, and other staff to help try and make this happen. With this in mind PLEASE take a moment to recognize students who are doing their best to support the Curley Cares way.
Please use the NOVEMBER 2018 FORM to submit student names so they may receive an award at our Friday, November 30, 2018 Curley Shares assemblies. You may reference the 1819_CurleyCaresStudentRecipients list to see the names of students who have already received awards this year. Please SUBMIT awards by 4:00pm Tuesday, November 27, 2018.

BIMAS

The Behavior Intervention Monitoring Assessment System (BIMAS) is a measure of social, emotional and behavioral functioning in children and adolescents ages 5 to 18 years. It includes 34 change-sensitive items that are used for universal screening of behavioral health and for assessing response to intervention. There will be optional times in CPT for you to complete the data entry. The due date is November 21st. WIDA Can Do For ELLs

The drive has been updated to include a folder for ELL's. In this folder you will find the WIDA Can Do Descriptors for students in Grades K-8. These are broken down into the four domains (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) and then each domain is broken into four subcategories: Recount, Explain, Argue, & Discuss. Using the students ACCESS data from January you can begin to see where you students are and where we can push them. It is important to remember that when looking at the students ACCESS scores they are just a snapshot in time from six months ago so the information may be different; however, this tool can be helpful to inform your practice.

Disney Musical

In two weeks rehearsals for the Disney Musical will begin on October 17, at 3:30 to 5:00 pm. No need to pre-register. You must be able to pick up your child at 5:00 or if they are in CASP, they will be escorted back to the appropriate classrooms after rehearsals. Rehearsals are Wednesday through March. Students should meet Ms. Knight in the walker yard at dismissal. Pick up at 5 pm is at the CASP entrance. INTERNATIONAL WEEK IS COMING!

This year at the Curley we will be celebrating International Week from November 26-30. This is an opportunity to introduce students to the world beyond classroom, school, and community — more details will be coming soon. In the meantime, you might reach out to families to find out the cultural background/ancestry of your students and talk with your classes/colleagues about countries you might like to study — perhaps collaborating on one country as a grade level team. Please let Amika know your country choice by Friday, October 26th.

If you’re new to the Curley, or interested in helping, please come to a meeting with members of the International Week Planning Committee tomorrow — Monday, October 15th — from 3:45-4:15 PM in Upper School Room 201. We’ll watch a 3-minute slideshow, answer questions, share resources, and exchange ideas to help make this year’s experience an integral part of your teaching rather than an “add on” with no connection to your daily routines. All are welcome and refreshments will be available!

Fall Fling Raffle Tickets

This year’s Fall Fling is Friday, October 19th and we hope you can come!
We are sending home 10 Fall Fling Raffle Tickets for families to purchase, sell or return. Please send the attached letters and tickets home with each student. The tickets and payment will come back in the envelopes provided. We are asking that they be returned by Tuesday, October 16th and we will come by to collect them during that week. Terranova Testing SY 2018-2019

During the period of October 9 ‐ 16, 2018, students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will be administered the TerraNova, third edition, in Reading and Mathematics in order to determine AWC eligibility for the 2019‐2020 school year. For the last two years our Excellence for All (EFA) schools have made clear that students would have access to the same level of rigor and enrichment through EFA programming. They have also made 5th grade parents aware that the TerraNova scores are used to identify students for the Exam School Initiative along with AWC eligibility. We will start administering the Terranova at Curley K-8 School test on Wednesday October 10 2018. Please Mr. Diaz if you have any questions or concerns.
