Shout Out

Shout out to Helenia Solimini for organizing a wonderful concert experience for her K2 students. Yesterday morning, the students had the opportunity to listen to musicians from the Boston Pops and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The students even got to dance a little and sing along!

Shout out to everyone who was involved with the gift drive this year—your donations, time and assistance will help make our students’ days a little brighter! An extra special shout out to Kristen Mitchell for implementing the idea, Sara Silverstein, Joanne Mylett, Waverly Kidd, Katie Baulier, and Connie Redden for doing the grunt work, and Christina Silva and interns for delivering gifts! To everyone that donated time to help wrap yesterday, you are THE BEST! Thank you for caring about our students!

Shout out to Meg Nason and Genet Mehari for hosting a cookie swap with the Climate Team today! It was fun and a great way to laugh and enjoy each other's company.

Shout out to Jenny Goldstein, Cari Lopez, Eva Banks, Emily Beck and Heide Signes for leading their class through sharing learning today at the assembly. The auditorium was filled with student work, song, acting, and video throughout the day all celebrating learning.

INCENTIVE FOR EARLY NOTIFICATION OF TERMINATION FOR BOSTON TEACHERS UNION - TEACHERS UNIT

In order to assist hiring for the 2017 - 2018 school year, the Boston Public Schools is offering a one-time incentive for early notification of termination to members of the BTU Teachers’ Unit.
An individual must be a permanent BTU Teacher, have a minimum of ten (10) years of continuous service in the Boston Public Schools, and must meet the minimum age requirement of fifty-five (55) years.

• Eligible employees presently on paid or unpaid leave of absence can apply. 
• The application, once accepted by the Office of Human Capital by execution of the 
• Separation Agreement, is binding on both parties and irrevocable. 
• Applicants understand that the termination must be effective between June 30, 2018 
• and August 31, 2018. 
• Applicants will be ineligible for hire into full time positions at Boston Public Schools for school year 2018-2019. 

Applicants further understand that:
a.) they will not be eligible for unemployment compensation and,
b.) acceptance of this incentive shall not affect any rights of a member under
the Teacher Retirement Law.

Applications must be filed with the Office of Human Capital by the close of business on Friday, January 12, 2018. If accepted, a one-time payment of $1,500 will be made by Friday, February 23rd, 2018. Individuals planning to retire must also file an “Intent to Retire” form with the City of Boston Retirement Board. The incentive application does not replace this process. Please note that pursuant to Retirement Board policy, an individual cannot file an “Intent to Retire” more than forty-five (45) days before the retirement date.

School Health and Wellness

In accordance with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), Boston Public Schools is required to inform all staff about the availability of the AHERA Management Plan. The AHERA Management Plan contains information about asbestos containing building materials (ACBM), plans to properly manage the asbestos, and periodic surveillance reports and re-inspection reports.
Boston Public Schools Environmental Division manages and updates an online database containing the AHERA Management Plan for each school. If any staff member would like to review a copy of the school’s AHERA Management Plan, please email Katie Grassa

ESL Classes for Families

In 2018 (hopefully starting in January), we will be offering ESL classes for parents at the Curley School. All levels are welcome and we will focus on learning English for practical purposes (for example, applying for jobs or helping your child with schoolwork) as well as basic grammar. There will be many opportunities to practice speaking. If you are interested, please call the Curley main office and speak to Madeline (617) 635-8176 to give her your information. Please say whether you prefer a morning or evening class.

Interim Assessment #2

The window for Curley Interim #2 is Jan. 3-19. Students should complete the Star test and open response question for both Math and Reading. Open response questions can be found in your grade level's CPT folder. Please reach out to Lindsey with questions.

Ground Crusher Coffee Shop

My class has again learned about economics and entrepreneurship. We have opened a coffee shop to apply these skills, many functional life math skills, social skills, and pre-vocational/transitional skills. Please come by and support my students efforts at being apart of the wider Curley Community! The money we raise goes to help support our students getting out to the JP community and apply social and community life skills in real-world scenarios (making purchases, grocery lists, staying in a budget, social skills in a store, etc.). Thank you in advance for your support in teaching my students and getting them out to new environments!

As 2017 draws to a close, we all have many reasons to be thankful. The Curley K-8 School is one-third of the way through a great school year with a diverse group of nearly 1,000 students, We celebrated a record-breaking Fall Fling and are all excited about the upcoming library re-opening.

During this season of giving, we are asking you to consider supporting additional needs of the school, specifically technology. Why is technology important in school? Beyond writing stories, students at the Curley K-8 school have used computers to calculate the velocity of a dog on skate board, design persuasive presentations, to read books and articles that would otherwise be inaccessible to them, to learn coding and to record and critique their musical and dramatic performances.

The school has achieved a 2:1 student-to-laptop ratio for 3rd - 8th graders, but we are still working to raise $16,000 to buy another mobile laptop cart to ensure our students are prepared for the 21st century.

In addition, some of the technology we purchased several years ago will soon need to be replaced. We can expect technology to be an ongoing fundraising area from year-to-year.

Staff, it is that time of year again to prepare for ACCESS: This year all teachers need to retrain for administering the test. You will need to log into to www.wida.us, read the information and take a quiz for each section you need to take. You must score at least 80% on the section in order to be certified to administer the test.

• New Staff or those who did not takes the training last year. 
• You will need to create an account on www.wida.us using username Massachusetts, password patriot. Create an account and follow the steps below. 

All Staff

• Teachers in Kindergarten: sign into www.wida.us your account and take the Kindergarten training module and quiz.
• Teachers in Grades 1-2: sign into www.wida.us and take the speaking grades 1-6 and paper administration modules and quizzes. 
• All Teachers in grades 3-8: Sign into www.wida.us and take the online administration test. 
• All teachers that have or service students that are ACCESS ALT will need to sign into their account and take the testing listed above as well as the Alternate ACCESS quiz. 
• Any non-teaching staff and administrators need to take kindergarten, speaking 1-6, paper and online. Once you have taken and passed the quizzes please bring in the completed certification to Kathy or Madeline by Friday January 5th 2017.

Shout out to Rain Twohads, Stiven Birenbaum, Jeremiah Sanchez, Amber Solo, Brennan Shapiro, and Yami Torres for representing the Curley community last Friday in a tennis tournament at Harvard University. This tournament ended up being the closest and most pressure-filled tennis event that Curley tennis has ever had, ending in a second place finish (Umana finished with 42 total games, Curley with 40) in the 6 team event. Despite heartbreaking losses in the championship round (after two hours of play, Jeremiah Sanchez and Stiven Birenbaum were literally 2 inches away from winning their division), Curley students handled themselves with resilience and sportsmanship. As a team, the players went over together to congratulate the Umana's team after the trophy ceremony. They weren't happy about this, but displayed tremendous maturity and gratitude during what was a disappointing moment for them.

Shout-Out Ms. Ricketts for coming out to support the Curley Tennis Crew on Friday at the tournament. Rain was especially happy to see her there!

City Year will come by next week, between 12/18 and 12/20, to drop off holiday cards for all the students in the school! These cards are to promote a positive mindset for students returning to school after the Winter Break. Our hopes is that these cards can help keep attendance high during the month of January! Shout out to the Girls Volleyball Team for coming in 3rd place overall at this weekends tournament. This team has worked hard to improve all year and we are so proud of this accomplishment! Thanks to Angela O'Neil and Danielle Moran for their efforts in leading this team.

 

Shout out to Curley retiree Susan Trotz for organizing some former colleagues for an evening of volunteering at the Celebration of Life event at Hynes Auditorium. It is an annual holiday dinner for folks with HIV/AIDS and their families.

K2 is having an owl visit from the Trailside Museum tomorrow (12/19). A parking space in the lower school lot will be reserved for our visitors with a sign. Thank you for your understanding.

Thanks to a caring Curley staff, several families have been chosen as recipients of the Curley Gift Drive! Here’s how it works: Tags will be hung outside both main offices, labeled with items (clothing, toys, etc.) that families have identified as areas of need for the holiday season. Staff and families can take the tags, purchase items, and bring them back to the Curley before December 19th. (The tags are labeled with identifying marks, so please return them with your unwrapped gift!) Gifts will be collected in Ms. Redden’s room (015 upper school) and Ms. Baulier’s room (111 lower school). Please feel free to send gift tags home with families that ask. Shout out to Emanuela Alves, Kim Taylor Knight and Shawn Paulling for putting on some fabulous performances today in the auditorium! It was standing room only for grade level singers, dancers and a middle school monologue. 

 

Shout out to Erika Mercado, Princess Ortega, Keon Hill, Nubea Martorell, Joseph Robinson, Andria Butler, Geju Brown, Jocelyn Hernandez, Sharon Pina-Pitts, Lourdes Vasquez, Adalberto Guerrero, Eunice Leon, Jasmine Rivera, Freddy Quinones, Blanca Pereira, Arleta Faulkner, Celia Chan, Maria Kamberidis, Kafunda Banks and all the students in CASP for a fantastic performance last week! Students from K1-grade 5 danced for an auditorium full of families!

 

 

Shout out to Konstantinos Petmezis, Deirdre Anderson, Nelly Rivera, Heide Signes and Joanne Mylett for opening their classrooms to the Step Into Art Program. This gave students an opportunity to look at art in a new way, visit an art museum as well as create their own art and writing products.

Staff, it is that time of year again to prepare for ACCESS: This year all teachers need to retrain for administering the test. You will need to log into to www.wida.us, read the information and take a quiz for each section you need to take. You must score at least 80% on the section in order to be certified to administer the test.

• You will need to create an account on www.wida.us using username Massachusetts, password patriot. Create an account and follow the steps below. 

All Staff

• Teachers in Kindergarten: sign into www.wida.us your account and take the Kindergarten training module and quiz.
• Teachers in Grades 1-2: sign into www.wida.us and take the speaking grades 1-6 and paper administration modules and quizzes.

Shout out to 6th grader Nicor Lawton for being brave and asking East Boston Savings Bank to help support those in Puerto Rico. His ability to express the needs of others and sharing his passion for helping them inspired the bank to give $250! Thank you Nicor for CARING about others!

Student Performance

On Friday, December 15th at 9AM Ms. Taylor Knight and Ms. Alves will be presenting their winter performance. This includes dancing with K1 and PACE, a musical showcase for grades K1-2nd grade and the middle school choir elective and Theatre elective.

Gift Drive Update

Thank you to everyone who offered to help donate wrapping paper and help wrap gifts. We will be sending the gifts home unwrapped. Sorry for any confusion!

City Year Cards for ALL Students

City Year will come by next week, between 12/18 and 12/20, to drop off holiday cards for all the students in the school! These cards are to promote a positive mindset for students returning to school after the Winter Break. Our hopes is that these cards can help keep attendance high during the month of January! Here’s how it works: Tags will be hung outside both main offices, labeled with items (clothing, toys, etc.) that families have identified as areas of need for the holiday season. Staff and families can take the tags, purchase items, and bring them back to the Curley before December 19th. (The tags are labeled with identifying marks, so please return them with your unwrapped gift!) Gifts will be collected in Ms. Redden’s room (015 upper school) and Ms. Baulier’s room (111 lower school). Please feel free to send gift tags home with families that ask. Monetary donations will also be collected in Ms. Mylett’s room (115 upper school). Thank you for caring about our students!

As 2017 draws to a close, we all have many reasons to be thankful. The Curley K-8 School is one-third of the way through a great school year with a diverse group of nearly 1,000 students, We celebrated a record-breaking Fall Fling and are all excited about the upcoming library re-opening.

During this season of giving, we are asking you to consider supporting additional needs of the school, specifically technology. Why is technology important in school? Beyond writing stories, students at the Curley K-8 school have used computers to calculate the velocity of a dog on skate board, design persuasive presentations, to read books and articles that would otherwise be inaccessible to them, to learn coding and to record and critique their musical and dramatic performances.

Curley family, you were so generous last year when I did the Toy Drive. I am doing it again.
My family and I are going to be collecting new unwrapped toys for Ambrose’s 2nd Annual Donation to Boston Children’s Hospital.
Last year over 500 toys where donated in honor of our sweet love, Ambrose Valentino and this year we are looking to go beyond.
All families at Children’s don’t go there by choice, but more often by necessity. Most stays are lengthy with children & families needing something to make it feel like home (as much as possible) especially during the holidays - not able to go home we will bring the comforts of home, love and kindness to them.
We are collecting new unwrapped toys for all ages. Thank you so much

We are beginning the planning process for SY 2018-19 and would like to take into consideration teacher preferences for next year. We are sending these out earlier than the schedule required by the contract so that we can better prepare for the budget process and for meeting the needs of our students for next year. We anticipate that the Curley will have the same grade configuration as this year, with the exception of one additional homeroom in Grade 6. Please fill out the attached form to indicate your preferences for SY 2018-19. Please complete by Friday, December 15, 2017.

Shout out to the 4th/5th Grade team for kindly including the 7th/8th Grade SAR students in your Wonder field trip. I know our students and teachers had a great time. It so supported our 1st semester reading of the book Wonder!

Shout out to Alicia Green, Danielle Moran, Kim Daly, Sarah Quatrale, Maria Santos, Candida Mundo, Leah Travers, Mr. Tewksbury, Ms. Peck Oser, Ms. Ward Jackson, Kate Davis, and City Year and TNY students for taking their 5th grade, SLIFE, and 7th & 8th grade students to see a screening of the movie Wonder today. This field trip tied in to students' summer reading and was timely support of anti-bullying workshops held on Monday for all 5th graders led by Iris Nieves, a Safe and Welcoming Schools specialist, with support from Sugeily Santos. Thank you all for coordinating these successful events in support of our students' social emotional learning.

Shout out to the entire 5th grade wants to send a huge thank you to Ms. Green for pulling together an amazing field-trip to see Wonder. The students, teachers, and parents who attended all had a great time! We also want to thank Ms. Ward Jackson for coming along to support some students who would not have been able to attend.

Most stays are lengthy with children & families needing something to make it feel like home (as much as possible) especially during the holidays - not able to go home we will bring the comforts of home, love and kindness to them.

Student Performance

On Friday, December 15th at 9AM Ms. Taylor Knight and Ms. Alves will be presenting their winter performance. This includes dancing with K1 and PACE, a musical showcase for grades K1-2nd grade and the middle school choir elective and Theatre elective.

Preference Sheet

We are beginning the planning process for SY 2018-19 and would like to take into consideration teacher preferences for next year. We are sending these out earlier than the schedule required by the contract so that we can better prepare for the budget process and for meeting the needs of our students for next year. We anticipate that the Curley will have the same grade configuration as this year, with the exception of one additional homeroom in Grade 6. Please fill out the attached form to indicate your preferences for SY 2018-19. Please complete by Friday, December 15, 2017.

Artifacts

Please be sure to upload your artifacts on EDFS by Friday, December 15th. You should upload 1-2 artifacts for each goal (two goals) AND each standard (four standards) for a total of 6-12 artifacts. Be sure to upload the data to support your progress with your Student Learning Goal.
