Shout out to all of our first year teachers for all their hard work in September and October. It is not easy to be a first year teacher but Meron Tefera, Melanie Bourgeault, Nicole Ferguson, Joanne Mylett and Kristen Willis have all been working hard for our students! Keep up the good work!

Vision Screening

NEEI will be back Monday, November 16th to finish K1 & K2 vision screening and any students who were absent.

Curley Cares Student Awards

Please submit the names of any students you would like give a Curley Cares Award to during our student Curley Shares assemblies next Thursday, November 5, 2015. Submissions are due on Monday, November 2, 2015 by 5:00pm. Please be sure to include the homeroom of each student receiving an award as it will help ensure awards are sent to the correct assembly. Thank you all very much for helping sustain this effort to recognize our students - your support is appreciated! You can fill it out in Google Forms.

Safety Plan

We are also asking that students leave all costumes, masks and face painting at home as well. Thank you in advance for your support around this matter.

PD

Professional Development is for all staff tomorrow (Paras and Teachers) this was voted on last spring and these hours are converted from January 4th (we voted to not come in that day and convert the hours). Please meet at 3pm in the auditorium. It is important that all staff sign in at this PD to get credit for the hours.

Also you must notify the cafeteria and the nurses when you submit this form. This helps them plan ahead for food and student needs. Movie Night Fundraiser for PACE

PACE will be holding a Family Movie Night Fundraiser on Tuesday, November 10th from 5-7pm (There is no school the next day). This event will help raise money for field trips which provide very important social and community experience for students on the Autism Spectrum. Tickets will be $3 a person and will include the movie ticket, popcorn and water. The movie will be Big Hero Six rated PG and all students must be accompanied by an adult. Staff is welcome to stay and help support PACE either by enjoying the movie, helping to supervisor or run concessions. Moving Carts To and From Classrooms:  

Each intervention teacher should work with grade level teams to think through the logistics of getting your Chromebook cart to the appropriate classroom.  Some teams are working with their City Year Corps members to assist in these timely transitions.  Students should not move carts.

After each WIN session, Chromebooks must be pluggedback into their appropriate spot in the cart and the cart should be returned to the host classroom, where the cart should be connected to an appropriate outlet for recharging.  It is critical that these steps are followed to assure that carts are ready for the next person to use. Also, please note any problems with specific chromebooks on the “Maintenance Request Log” found in each cart.

As a final reminder, all students should come to their respective WIN block with a sharpened pencil and independent reading book.  We ask each WIN teacher to take attendance to assure we have students in the correct intervention.  You can simply copy the rosters that were distributed to you last week and date them for this purpose.  Attendance sheets will be collected at the end of this week.

INTERNATIONAL WEEK UPDATE

Middle School students need to be brought in front of the school through the main office Upper School. Curley Staff Shares

Heat

It is that time of year again! The heat is on in the building for the foreseeable future. If you do not have heat after 8am please contact the main office and let Kathy and Madeline know EACH DAY this happens. ABA PD

You can find learning objectives and target audience information on the corresponding tabs. You can also RSVP for individual sessions (hover over the "RSVP Link" cell, then click the hyperlink).  Sessions are available both live (most at the Bruce C Bolling Building) and remotely via Google Hangouts.

Curley Event

It was an action packed day with visits from Dr. Chang and Chelsea Clinton. Open Circle Breakfast

Open Circle Breakfast will be held this Friday morning at 7:45 in room 212, second floor, Lower School. We hope you all have begun using your Open Circle curriculum guides and are trying to religiously teach 2 lessons per week. At the meeting, we can help answer questions you have, provide ideas for any time issues you're facing, schedule a time for you to come watch one of us teach a lesson, or we can come and watch you teach one and provide feedback. WE ARE NOT ASSESSORS!!! We are SUPPORT! All new teachers to the building with classrooms should definitely attend. Feel free to bring a dish if you like.

All progress reports should address each individual benchmark and include the rate of progress towards mastering the goals.

WIN 

The “soft launch” of the WIN block for students in grades 3-8 over the past two weeks has given grade level teams the opportunity to work out logistics and student assignments. Once ANET testing is completed this week, we move into our next phase of WIN implementation, beginning October 26th, during which specific program instruction is expected to begin, if it hasn’t already.

Rosters of students, by WIN placement, will be distributed this week for grade level teams to review and confirm, so that our WIN data spreadsheet is accurate and reflects current students’ assignments. Please take time during your grade team meetings to quickly review these rosters as well as confirm plans for moving students to their appropriate WIN rooms. 

As standard operating procedure, all students should come to their WIN room with a pencil and an independent reading book, just in case technology is not working, or if substitutes are covering the period. Again, thank you for your continued hard work to assure that all Curley 3-8 students receive “what is needed” to be successful readers!

We are excited to announce that this Wednesday October 21st, Chelsea Clinton will be visiting the Curley K-8 school. Clinton is the daughter of Bill Clinton (42nd President of the United States) and Hillary Clinton (former US Secretary of State and current Democratic Presidential Candidate), and is in Boston to share her new book, It’s Your World: Get Informed, Get Inspired & Get Going. In the book, aimed at young readers ages 10-14, Clinton breaks down some of the world’s biggest challenges and shares inspiring stories of young people who are already making an impact in their own communities and around the globe.

Clinton will be meeting with middle school students at the Curley K-8 School to complete projects that will benefit the entire school community as well as ​residents of Boston. In addition to painting murals to beautify our school with inspirational phrases and pictures, students will create academic resource kits for their lower-school peers. The “soft launch” of the WIN block for students in grades 3-8 over the past two weeks has given grade level teams the opportunity to work out logistics and student assignments.  Once ANET testing is completed this week, we move into our next phase of WIN implementation, beginning October 26th, during which specific program instruction is expected to begin, if it hasn’t already. Rosters of students, by WIN placement, will be distributed this week for grade level teams to review and confirm, so that our WIN data spreadsheet is accurate and reflects current students’ assignments. Please take time during your grade team meetings to quickly review these rosters as well as confirm plans for moving students to their appropriate WIN rooms. Also, as standard operating procedure, all students should come to their WIN room with a pencil and an independent reading book, just in case technology is not working, or if substitutes are covering the period.Again, thank you for your continued hard work to assure that all Curley 3-8 students receive “what is needed” to be successful readers!

Movie Night Fundraiser for PACE

PACE will be holding a Family Movie Night Fundraiser on Tuesday, November 10th from 5-7pm (There is no school the next day). This event will help raise money for field trips which provide very important social and community experience for students on the Autism Spectrum. Tickets will be $3 a person and will include the movie ticket, popcorn and water. The movie will be Big Hero Six rated PG and all students must be accompanied by an adult. Staff is welcome to stay and help support PACE either by enjoying the movie, helping to supervisor or run concessions. Staff family members are welcome as well free of charge. Please email Kristen Mitchell for further details kmitchell@bostonpublicschools.org.

Shout out to Lindsey Wright for assisting a colleague with the new system for writing IEP goals online. It entails a lot of cutting and pasting and can be cumbersome until you figure the process out. She was so pleasant, patient, thoughtful and very helpful.  This experience confirms my belief that people, although they may appear quiet, are really nice people and when given the opportunity to show their true self though acts of kindness, they will. Thanks!

Shout out to Anna Youman for taking on the Arts Liaison position and acting as a rudder in the art department at the Curley. We appreciate your support helping both the school and the families.

Shout out to Laurie Ciardi for helping us better organize the use of the playing field. A few simple clicks and teams/teachers can block off time for your students to play outside on the field. Thanks for helping us solve this "good" problem!

Shout out to the School Climate Team for organizing a first set of Curley Shares! It was an exciting day and amazing to see how students already knew the routines for the event. A special thanks to Matt Hins (Husband of Cara Hins) for putting together the fabulous Smile and Say Hello Video. It will be stored on the drive for you to view with your students at other times.

Shout out to our Spanish teacher, Acacia Aguirre. She was in the teachers room yesterday making small booklets for every student she teaches, differentiated by grade level and language ability, so they can practice reading Spanish at home. She does this every week for 250 students. She also volunteered to be a resource for any teacher studying a Spanish-speaking country during International Week. I just think this is going “above and beyond” for a person who is only here a few days/week.

Gone are the days of emailing the whole staff to let them know you want to use the field! Click on the link that says Book Playing Field and you can submit a request to use the field. All teachers and teams should use this from now on when you want to use the field.

ANet Updates

We want to thank everyone for being patient during this A1 cycle. Your students have persevered through Internet challenges and login issues. As we continue the A1 cycle, We ask that when hosting a computer cart it is plugged in to ensure that the computers are charged and ready for other classes. All students will still receive Universal Free Breakfast and Lunch however each student will be asked to type in their 6 digit student ID number upon receiving a lunch. This has been rolling out across the city and we are the last wave of schools to implement this change. Students with bus passes (many 7th & 8th grades) will be able to just swipe their pass but others will need to learn their code. This has been practice across the city in the past so if you know of a good system we are open to the ideas. We will not be getting the white ID cards which has been used in the past. Please email any ideas, questions or concerns to David Diaz.

Halloween

The Curley K-8 will not have a Halloween celebration during the school day. As a community we are focused on health and wellness and therefore we ask that all candy remain at home. We are also asking that students leave all costumes, masks and face painting at home as well. Thank you in advance for your support around this matter.

Shout out to all teachers! Last night a School Site Council families spoke overwhelmingly about how much they enjoyed Open House. They wanted to make sure that teachers knew how much they appreciated their efforts and how excited they are about this school year! PACE PD

It will take place on Thursday from 3pm-5pm in room 109 (Upper School). From 3pm-4pm we will review new restraint laws and documentation and from 4pm-5pm Jen Richards will do a communications training. See Liz Spring for further clarification.

LC PD

Cohorts 1 and 2 will meet together to focus on 'Maximizing Literacy Opportunities in Managed Independent Learning'.  Our goals for the session are to think about and discuss the continuum of literacy opportunities during MIL in K2, 1st and 2nd grade, think about how MIL supports the diverse needs of learners in our classrooms, and revisit the values of MIL.  Materials and meeting place TBA.

INTERNATIONAL WEEK IS COMING! 

Thanks to those who were able to come to last week’s planning meeting! Participating homerooms will spend time during the week of November 16-20 learning about a country, then sharing what they’ve learned by visiting & hosting at least one other class (passports in hand) in the days before Thanksgiving. Attached is an “Activity Menu” for your reference. City Year will make passports for all participating students and provide classroom support to grades 3-8. This year we’re encouraging you to exchange with your cross-grade buddy class.

Please let Amika know, by the end of October, which country your class would like to study, preferably via email: amika45@comcast.net. Attached is a list of countries represented at the Curley K-8; let us know if you have anyone whose family came from a country not yet included! We hope you’ll enjoy this annual celebration of countries around the world; it’s a perfect opportunity to invite families to share their cultures with your students. While there were a few issues beyond our control it was helpful to know these now so we can troubleshoot. Thanks!

Additional access points will be place in the Upper School early next week and this should curb some of the internet concerns around the building. It is important that we communicate about these issues early and often to assure the kinks are worked out sooner rather than later.

DUE: Student Names for Curley Cares Awards 

Please submit the names of up to three (3) students you would like to nominate for Curley Cares awards by this Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at 4:00pm using the following form:

Click here for a direct link to the form. Our goal is that each Curley K-8 student will receive a Curley Cares award by the end of the school year. Each homeroom teacher should try to give 3 student awards each month (one for each: We Care About Ourselves, We Care About Each Other, We Care About Our School). 

ALL staff (not just homeroom teachers) can nominate students to receive awards - so work with specialty teachers, paraprofessionals, WIN team members, administrative staff, and after school staff to find ways to ensure that all students are recognized by the end of the year. Thank you!

Life Threatening Allergies (LTAs)

Please read the list of students with Life Threatening Allergies (LTAs) sorted by homeroom teacher. If the student currently has an Epipen and/or orders to use an Epipen in school, it has been noted in parenthesis next to the student’s name. This information has been derived from student Physical Exams and student Emergency Cards. As you can see most of the students listed as having an allergy do not have an Epipen in school. All student medications (including Epipens) should be kept in the nurse’s office unless alternate arrangements have been made with the nurse. As always, please contact the Nurse’s Office with any questions or concerns.

Picture Day

Picture Day this year will take place October 27 for grades K-5 and October 28 for grades 6-8. We will have a make up day for elementary grade students on October 28 and for middle school students by appointment. Middle School families can make arrangements with Jennifer Connelly at (781) 696-1138.

We encourage all students to fill out their picture forms and take individual pictures. This year, we will also take homeroom pictures for grades 7th and 8th for $10 a picture. If your students would like to order one, please write it on the order form and attach $10.

Middle School students need to be brought in front of the school through the main office Upper School. They'll have their picture taken in front of the school on Centre Street.
