Shout out to all of the PACE and SAR paras - your support during lunch and recess is amazing and helps students have a smooth day!

Shout out to the middle school and admin team! The way you rolled out the new expectations for middle schoolers has been effective and great modeling for the rest of us. The hallways have been so quiet!

Shout out to Kristen Mitchell for helping find my student's equipment on the bus! You went above and beyond- Thank you!

Retirement Celebration

ACCESS

ACCESS testing begins tomorrow:
Writing Grades 1-3
Your materials will be ready for teachers after students complete the Listening and Reading sections. You will need to give yourself enough time to sign out materials. Mr. Diaz will be there by 8:00.

On-Line Testers 2-8:
First all lap tops need to be rebooted in order to make sure that the DRC insight APP is loaded on the chrome books.

You need to make sure to pick up your tickets for testing from David Diaz. Each student has a different password for each session. Their username is the same but the password changes for Reading, Listening and Writing.

Each students has their own computer. The should not log-in.
Verify the ticket contains the correct Student Name and Date of Birth.
Students should login to the assessment using the Username and Password on their test tickets. Once this information is correctly entered, the test becomes active. Test tickets need to be collected at the end of each session and returned to David Diaz.

Lexia Rapid

I have an update regarding the January Lexia Rapid Assessment. I know some of you have started this and some may have completed it. However, we have just received news we do not need to administer this test just for this round. This is new information and is based on the push back from teachers here at our training. (Thanks, Sara, Alissa and all the teachers from the Condon, Mather, JFK, Perkins & Holmes.) BPS central office staff have heard about the concerns with the assessment as well as the high volume of testing during this time.

This means that if you have started the test, you can stop. There will be no make ups for absent students. As of right now, we are scheduled to take the EOY Lexia Assessment.

I am sorry to those staff who have already dedicated time to this, but I do think this is a great example of the power of teacher leadership and the value of teacher voice!

TerraNova3 Test Score Information to Parents/Guardians

TerraNova3 test scores for students in grades 3-5 will be sent home with students on Friday, January 11, 2019. Mrs. Vasquez (grades 4th and 5th) and Mrs. Powers (3rd grade), will distribute scores by homeroom in a sealed school envelope. Please make sure all students in your homeroom take their letters home in their backpacks. Let Mr. Diaz know if you have any questions.

Announcement from Guidance

As many of you know, we have a waitlist for school-based counseling services at the Curley. We are excited to announced that Kelly Reed, Mental Health Counselor, has agreed to provide school-based counseling services to many of our waitlisted students, especially those needing services in Spanish. Please help us welcome Kelly to our community:

Kelly is a mental health counselor and drama therapist from the Rio Grande Valley, Texas, and a graduate of Lesley University. Kelly works for Community Services Institute and will be at the Curley Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

MOY BAS Info for grades K2, 1st, and 2nd

If you have running records that show a student is reading on or above your grade's instructional level benchmark, you do not need to do the BAS with them. If a student is reading below the instructional level benchmark, you need to do the BAS to find the highest instructional level and their hard level. See table below in blog for BAS dates.

CPT Cycle January 3rd - March 1st

Thank you to the teachers who provided feedback from the first 70 days of school regarding CPT time. We have heard that you are supportive of the structure but need more time to implement the CPT Cycles within the Curley Work Plan. This week on the Work Plan: Norming/Grading ELA Interim 2 Open Response Analyzing Data- CPT #1 Cycle We would like to propose that from 1/3/19-3/1/19 that teams will complete a CPT Cycle based on Interim 2 data (ELA for everyone but middle school math and science) as well as hold one climate meeting. Everyone will begin with CPT 1 in 2019. This will give teams between 6-8 CPT meetings (depending on days off) as well as one 2 hour PD on 1/24/19 to complete these items. Below are sample agendas for each CPT meeting. Team have the autonomy to map out these weeks so they can complete the full cycle by 3/1/19. See ILT representatives for more details.

• CPT #1 - Looking at Data/Focus students - Review most recent forms of data (ELA Interim 2, Lexia etc…) in order to understand where your students are in connection to the grade level learning standards. Choose a focus standard/area for the upcoming unit plan.
• CPT #2 - Unit Plan Overview - Preview the upcoming unit, specifically focus on where within this unit the focus standard/area you choose during CPT 1 and where it can be explicitly taught.
• CPT #3 - Plan Lesson - Collaboratively plan one lesson as a team that relates to the focus standard/area chosen during CPT 1.
• CPT #4 - LASW - All team members bring focus student work for the collaboratively planned lesson (CPT 3) and complete the protocol.
• CPT #5 - Reflection - Take time to reflect on this CPT cycle. 
• Climate Meeting - TBD

NAEP Testing

The Curley K-8 School will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on 2/25/18 (4th grade) and 2/26/18 (8th grade). NAEP is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics. The results are released as The Nation’s Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents, policymakers, and the public.
Students in 4th and 8th grade will/may take an assessment in mathematics or reading. In addition to subject-area questions, NAEP survey questionnaires are voluntarily completed by students. The questionnaires provide valuable information about participating students’ educational experiences and opportunities to learn both in and out of the classroom. More information about NAEP survey questionnaires is available at https://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/parents under the section “What Questions Are on the Test?”
The assessment takes about 120 minutes for most students, including transition time and directions. Please contact Mr. Diaz if you have any questions or concerns.

Early Retirement Incentive

In an effort to assist in early planning and hiring for the 2019-2020 academic year, the district offers a $1,500 incentive to eligible members of the teachers unit who inform us of their intent to terminate at the end of the school year. The application for the incentive must be submitted by Jan 11, 2019. See attached circular for more details. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Field Trip Request Procedure

All field trips requests should be submitted in the following way, check out this powerpoint for additional information on the steps.

• Fill out electronic form at least 2 weeks in advance. This link will be available in the blog daily. Field Trip Request Form
• Print your form submission. 
• Email list of students attending to nurses. 
• Get nurse and cafeteria signature at least 2 weeks in advance. They can sign anywhere at the bottom of your page. 
• Turn in to either main office. 
• Pass out permission slips and have students return. (English p.12, Other Languages)
• The SPC has allotted each grade level $500 to put towards field trips; any questions should be send to treasurer@curleyk8.com.

Shout out to Ms. West. Today she assisted in managing a behavior issue. Two students needed a space, buddy room. She let them work in her room, during her P&D. This helped reset my class.

Monday 1/7/19 - Wednesday 1/9/19

Katie, Adrian, Alissa, Sara will be out 1/7-1/9 for a training at the University of Virginia. This training will be lead by Paul Bambrick-Santoyo the author of Leveraged Leadership. We look forward to sharing our learning upon our return to Boston. For a good portion of the day, Katie & Adrian will not have access to email/phone. David & Lindsey will be your main supports. These numbers should be used for emergencies and if you need to call/text in sick.

NAEP Testing

The Curley K-8 School will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on 2/25/18 (4th grade) and 2/26/18 (8th grade). NAEP is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics. The results are released as The Nation’s Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents, policymakers, and the public.
Students in 4th and 8th grade will/may take an assessment in mathematics or reading. In addition to subject-area questions, NAEP survey questionnaires are voluntarily completed by students. The questionnaires provide valuable information about participating students’ educational experiences and opportunities to learn both in and out of the classroom. More information about NAEP survey questionnaires is available at https://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/parents under the section “What Questions Are on the Test?”
The assessment takes about 120 minutes for most students, including transition time and directions. Please contact Mr. Diaz if you have any questions or concerns.

Early Retirement Incentive

In an effort to assist in early planning and hiring for the 2019-2020 academic year, the district offers a $1,500 incentive to eligible members of the teachers unit who inform us of their intent to terminate at the end of the school year. The application for the incentive must be submitted by Jan 11, 2019. See attached circular for more details. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Field Trip Request Procedure

All field trips requests should be submitted in the following way, check out this powerpoint for additional information on the steps.

• Fill out electronic form at least 2 weeks in advance. This link will be available in the blog daily. Field Trip Request Form
• Print your form submission. 
• Email list of students attending to nurses. 
• Get nurse and cafeteria signature at least 2 weeks in advance. They can sign anywhere at the bottom of your page. 
• Turn in to either main office. 
• Pass out permission slips and have students return. (English p.12, Other Languages)
• The SPC has allotted each grade level $500 to put towards field trips; any questions should be send to treasurer@curleyk8.com.

Shout out to everyone who came out to support the Girls on the Run Team's bake sale last Thursday. The team proudly raised a total of $222 to donate to a children's cancer organization.

Congrats to the girls for completing their 5K in Hopkinton this weekend! If you see a girl in a pink shirt on Tuesday, give her a high five for her accomplishment!

Katie's Absence Plan 6/11-6/15

I wanted to remind you all that I will be out all next week at a training at the University of Virginia. I certainly wish it was not during such a busy time of year and I am sad to miss so many amazing events that will take place here next week. I wanted to communicate a coverage plan so you are all aware what will continue to take place in my absence. Also please note that I am not allowed to be on school email or phone during my learning sessions and I will be putting up an away message.

Seeking Capstone Panel Members

Mr. Paulling's Final Shows

Here are the dates and times for the final week. All will be in the theatre arts room, except the June 15 performance of Redden and Garcia. I'm going to rehearse with those students on the stage to see if we can make it work, because both classes are performing together. Performances should last about 40 minutes.

June Curley Cares Awards!

The last Curley Cares assembly of the 2017-2018 school year is rapidly approaching (YAY!) and we have given close too 1,110 awards to students so far this year. Curley Cares awards are intended to reinforce positive student behaviors in support of the Curley Cares rules and the expectation/hope is that every Curley K8 student should earn at least one award each year so reach out to members of your grade-level team, paras, specialists, and other staff to help try and make this happen (any staff member with a BPS Google login can access the form). Please ​refer to THIS LIST to see those students who have already received award(s)​ this school year​.

With this in mind PLEASE take a moment (perhaps during CPT) to recognize students who​ are doing their best to support the Curley Cares way. Student Surveys Grades 4 - 8 (March 12 - June 15)

Please have all students Grades 4-8 complete this as part of class. All student surveys are online. The survey is available in students’ Digital Backpack as well as through the following student link:

Spring ELA STAR Assessment Reminder : (Grades 3-8 Only)

Just a reminder that the STAR ELA assessment window is open this coming week, June 4-8th. ALL students should take STAR Reading at this time. In addition, students who have been assessed using STAR Early Literacy should take the spring benchmark of this assessment as well.
Please remind students of the importance of the assessment in understanding their reading progress over the past school year. Also, check that no background programs are running while students take the assessment (e.g. "Google Read/Write").

Summer Reading - 2018

We are finalizing expectations and guidelines for summer 2018 reading program. As last year, all students will be asked to take a pledge to read daily over the summer months and to maintain a log of this reading. In addition, students entering grades 4 through 8 will be expected to read one additional book, in coordination with the BPS and Boston Public Library initiative, “Summer Reading Together”. Packets of information, including the summer a reading pledge, reading bingo activity, and logs are now being finalized and will be distributed to classroom teachers the week of June 11th.

Spring Term Report Cards K2-Grade 5

The spring grading window for students in grades K2-5 is open from June 4th to June 24th. Please refer to the materials below for instructions on entering grades.
Reminder: After entering or editing grades in the scores tab, teachers must click Post Grades to write the grades to the report cards. Grades will be saved as you enter them but they will not appear on the report cards until you click Post Grades.

ACCESS Testing Results 

As you know we are required to meet in Grade level teams to discuss ACCESS test results and ELD levels for students. Results were delivered to the school today and Waverly will need a couple of days to sort through the paper work. We are asking teams to give me 30 minutes of their CPT time either next week (week of 6/4) or the week after (week of 6/11) to discuss students scores, overall academic growth and English language development. I realize this is in addition to what is being asked of you at this time of year but it is necessary prior to student placement. All meetings need to take place prior to Friday June 15th as all ELD levels are due in SIS by this date. Please Contact Waverly @wkidd@bostonpublicschools.org to set up a time to meet.

Student Profile Information

Student Profiles will be entered in the Journals tab of SIS by Monday, June 18. Every student (K1 - 8) will have a journal, even if they are leaving the Curley School. SPED and ESL teachers should support and provide input for students. Teachers can work amongst themselves to determine who is the most appropriate person to fill out for each student. 

• Please be concise, specific, and use discretion. Families have a right to request this information. 
• How to log onto the Journal tab: Log into SIS > Find student and click on their name > Click on Journals tab at the top > Click on Add button > Type Student Profile SY 2017-18 then a paragraph of the information (see below) > Click Save 
• For each student, log a Journal titled Student Profile SY 2017-18: 
• Academic strengths/supports? (Include interventions i.e. reading recovery)
• SEL/Behavior strengths supports? (Include behavior plans/important rapport-building info)
• Relevant family information
• Ex. mom prefers email, prefers morning meetings
• USE DISCRETION families have a right to request this info

Examples: 

• Student Profile SY 2017-18: Student was performing at grade level in all subjects by end of year. Works best academically with a small group. Student likes one-on-one talks to build relationship. Student received counseling SY 2017-18. Check in with Sugeily Santos for further information. 
• Student Profile SY 2017-18: Student has grade-level reading fluency and math skills. He needs support with reading comprehension and generating ideas in writing. Student likes to follow the rules and has trouble when others do not. This sometimes causes conflict between him and other classmates. See IEP. Mom and dad are easy to reach through email and/or text.

GLBTQA+ Club Kick-Off

(Gay, Straight, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning/Queer, Allies and Others)
We need your help. You will find flyers (English/Spanish) in your mailboxes to announce our kick-off. The Club will start next year but we want to gather interest and information in which students would like to attend to help us plan and celebrate them.
Can you please consider

• hanging the signs up on the outside door of your classroom or in a noticeable place for your students and others? 
• taking 3-5 minutes during Open Circle or Homeroom to announce the kick-off breakfast? 
• reminding students about the breakfast on June 12th?

While we are happy to have Staff attend (of course), our main focus for adult support is to get students to turn out for an event where our Curley students feel welcome, included and heard. We would appreciate any help you can provide with turnout and getting the word out.

The BAS/Dibels testing window will be open from May 14 to June 8. K2, 1st and 2nd grade teachers will receive one full day of testing coverage. Contact Caitlyn with any questions.

• We voted to redistribute the 6 hours from 1/2/19
• We voted to hold our Fall Open House on Thursday, September 27th from 5pm-7pm
• We voted for Option 2 (24 hours): Professional Development on August 28th and 29th from 8am to 3pm (14 hours) AND five (5) 2-hour sessions on the following Thursdays from 3:45 to 5:45 pm: 10/4, 11/1, 12/13, 1/31, 3/7 with a make-up day on 4/4 (in case of snow).
