Thank you for staying after school to support a family and for listening to what they need. It is overwhelmingly positive to see so many adults who will do anything to help a child succeed! Boston Herald

The Boston Herald will join us for all of our Curley Shares on Thursday. They want to do a feature about our school and the work we have done around Curley Cares. Tomorrow Madeline and Kathy will hand out copies of releases to send home with each student. In case you need more here is the English version and the Spanish version.

Sharing Fun Memories and Kind Thoughts

We are collecting staff memories, thoughts, and words of wisdom to be shared with our retirees and school partners. Please think back over your time working with each of our retirees and school partners and share a few thoughts about their contribution to your life, the lives of our students and families, and/or the larger Curley community across the years. 

• Please share your fun, funny, or just plain memorable moments and kind thoughts about one or all of our retirees or our partners. 
• Consider your everyday interactions with these colleagues and how their contributions (big or small) have supported you, our students, or our school. All comments will be shared ANONYMOUSLY during our final PD on June 2, 2016.

Bulletin Boards

It's time to change our bulletin boards one last time!  During art class this week all classes will be participating in a contest to design our Curley T-Shirt for next year.  Next week, you will be asked to display the designs created by your students on your classroom bulletin board.  They must be up by June 13th so that the judges can choose a winner.  We can't wait to see the halls filled with reasons why the Curley is caring!

EOY Math Assessments

For students in Grades 3 - 12 who are taking the ATI end-of-year assessments:

EOY testing is scheduled from June 6-17. ODA will be posting the policy and procedure guides by the beginning of this week. Briefly, schools should return the assessments by June 17 at 4:30pm. For paper tests that are returned by that date, we will make every effort to have assessments scanned (and scores available) by Monday, June 20. For tests taken online, scores are instantaneous.

For students in K2, Grade 1, and Grade 2, there is an end-of-year assessment created by the Math Office that you can find on Aspen/SIS.  These are intended to provide your school with information about how students are performing relative to the math standards at those grade levels and we are not currently collecting those data centrally.

Hat Day

We are scheduled to have our first annual Curley K-8 School Hat Day to support our 8th Graders’ Moving On Ceremony on Friday, June 3.  All students and staff members who purchase a bracelet for $1 will be permitted to wear their favorite hat all day next Friday.  Mr. Melzer is putting envelopes in your mailboxes which should include enough fliers and bracelets for the students in your homeroom class.  If a mistake was made or if you need more for the adults in your class, please contact him directly at cmelzer@bostonpublicschools.org. Please consider marking bracelets with a sharpie to distribute on Friday so no students lose theirs.  Thanks for supporting our 8th Graders’ celebration!​

Lead Teacher Position Posting

Below is some information from BPS Central Office regarding this position. Please let Katie Grassa know if you are interested in applying. We are launching the Lead Teacher program for 2016-2017 at this time. The current description includes co-facilitation of the ILT as a key element of the Lead Teacher position. A key piece of our Theory of Action (TOA) is that all schools have effective ILTs guided by a shared vision of collaborative adult learning that engage in CDTs themselves. Including Lead Teachers as co-facilitators of ILT is an important step in building the vision of collaborative adult learning. Please review the Lead Teacher Information Sheet and Lead Teacher position description (also attached below). These documents will provide more information about the role and include guidance for selecting Lead Teachers and a selection process checklist.

Use this form to recognize the students we work with who exhibit consistent or improved understanding of the Curley Cares rules as demonstrated by a specific deed, general conduct, overall academic perseverance and/or improvement, or some other form of participation. Awards will be presented during the Curley Shares assemblies on Thursday, June 2, 2016. Submissions are due Tuesday, May 31, 2016 ​ If you would like to give more than 3 awards, please email Kate Davis directly by Friday, May 27 with the extra name(s), award type(s), and what they did to earn the award, and I will add the names to the list. Here is the list of students who have won awards so far this year. You​ must be logged into your BPS Google account to fill out and submit the form. The End of Year Assessments are due June 15, 2016. Please schedule your EOY testing dates for Math and ELA by grade level and enter the information on the following link EOY Schedule Spreadsheet. I will prepare bins by homeroom and I will have them ready the day before your administer the assessment. Please contact Mr. Diaz if you have any questions.

ELA Spring Benchmark Period – Grades 3-8

The ELA spring benchmark assessment for grades 3-8 should be conducted between May 31^st and June 10th.  Grades 3-6 will administer DIBELS/DAZE Benchmark 3, and grades 7 and 8 will administer MAZE Benchmark 3. All testing materials will be distributed to teachers this week, and assessment results should be entered into the WIN Data spreadsheet on the Google drive as soon as possible, but no later than June 10th. Please contact Eileen Cronin for any questions regarding the upcoming benchmarking activities.

Health and Wellness

We are looking for a Health and Wellness co-chair for next year. There will be a stipend for the staff member who wants to take this work on in collaboration with families. Some of the responsibilities include:

Environment- bathrooms, windows

Cultural proficiency

Exercise/ yoga

stress reduction and mental health

Notes from the Nurse

We are seeing a large number of students with seasonal allergy symptoms in the nurse's office. The pollen count is very high and effecting even people who do not usually suffer from seasonal allergy symptoms. We have been giving children a "seasonal allergy" letter to take home to parents/guardians. These letters contain some helpful information on how to manage seasonal allergy symptoms. Some children may need medication that can be given at home with the advice of their pediatrician.  Seasonal allergies can be uncomfortable for some children but generally not dangerous, and they are not contagious. If you suspect a student is having allergy symptoms it can be helpful to send the child to the bathroom to wash their hands and face, especially if they have just come in from outside. Attached is Seasonal Allergy handout for teachers to read. As always if you suspect a student is having difficulty breathing or you have other concerns, please send the student to the nurse. 

Bring a Book – Take a Book

A Summer Reading Book Swap is scheduled for Friday, June 17th! Students will be able to choose a “new to you” book or two from the donated collection, as part of Field Day activities. Over the next few weeks, a visit schedule will be developed, with teacher input. Look for notices in your mailboxes to send home with students, in both English and Spanish.

WE NEED BOOKS! 

Flower-covered donation boxes will be located in the upper and lower school lobbies. This is a great opportunity to review classroom libraries and donate gently used books that you no longer need. The deadline for donating books for the book swap is Thursday, June 15th. Please contact Caitlyn Gable (lower school) or Eileen Cronin (upper school) with any questions.

K-4 Field Day

The K-4 Field Day will take place on Thursday, June 16th with a rain date of Friday, June 17th. Please email Mark Righini with and questions.

SPED Progress Reports

The Final round of SPED progress reports will open Monday, May 16th.  They will close on Thursday, June 9th.

Finger Printing

Just a reminder to all staff that finger printing must be completed by July 30th. Please see the BTU Reps if you have any questions and here is a website for your reference as well www.identogo.com/fp/massachusetts.aspx. Also the code you need is 00350000.

Outside Use

Secretaries, counselors, and others need to know where students are for various reasons. With the continuing good weather we need to remind teachers that if they leave their classroom to go outside or to another classroom they need let the front office know and put a sign on your door. Also, if teachers are interested in going outside, they have to wait until all recesses are over at 1:20pm also from 1:30-2:20 each day PACE uses the play structures. K-2 Teachers

Teachers should move their students on the Lower School data wall by May 26th. There will be one more final move in June. The EOY BAS window is May 16th - June 16th. Teachers need to find instructional and hard levels for all students. The EOY Dibels window is May 23rd - June 10th.

Field Trips

Spring is here and many classes are signed up for field trips in the coming weeks. Please do not forget to give the nurse's office and cafeteria staff 2 weeks notice for any field trips.

Shout out to our new BTU Reps for SY 2016-2017 Arleta Faulkner, Genet Mehari, MaryClare Moran, Connie Redden, and Kate Davis. Thank you in advance for all your support and guidance and we look forward to continued collaboration. It is a big year since we are in contract negotiations and your leadership will be necessary in supporting us all with any of the contract shifts. Thanks!

Shout out to our students and staff in Sole Train! This past Sunday, over 150 Sole Train runners from schools all over Boston ran the 5 mile or half marathon race at Boston's Run to Remember.  14 Curley students and 5 Curley staff were out there on the course that day running alongside the 10,000 other people who are registered for the event.

Shout out to Maria Ploessl on her last day as the Curley City Year Impact Manager. Thank you for all your have done for our school. We have truly enjoyed our partnership with City Year in part because of your ability to build relationships between the organization and our school. You are a strong leader who has been able to support teachers and Corps Members. Your smile, kindness towards others and Minnesota accent will be missed. Best of luck to you in all your future endeavors and remember that you will always be considered a Curley Flying Lion!

BTU Representation SY 2016-2017

We have some changes in the voting for BTU Reps. We will be voting now in May for Building Reps due to changes in the BYLAWS with the BTU. We will be taking names of any and all staff who wish to run for BTU Reps now through Monday, May 23rd. The election will be held on Tuesday, May 24th. You may vote throughout the day and announcements will be given on Wednesday the 25th. Please submit your name if interested in an Email to any of our current reps.

EOY Assessments for grades 3-8

The End of Year Assessments are due June 15, 2016. Please schedule your EOY testing dates for Math and ELA by grade level and enter the information on the following link EOY Schedule Spreadsheet. I will prepare bins by homeroom and I will have them ready the day before your administer the assessment. Please contact Mr. Diaz if you have any questions.

ELA Spring Benchmark Period – Grades 3-8

The ELA spring benchmark assessment for grades 3-8 should be conducted between May 31^st and June 10th.  Grades 3-6 will administer DIBELS/DAZE Benchmark 3, and grades 7 and 8 will administer MAZE Benchmark 3. All testing materials will be distributed to teachers this week, and assessment results should be entered into the WIN Data spreadsheet on the Google drive as soon as possible, but no later than June 10th. Please contact Eileen Cronin for any questions regarding the upcoming benchmarking activities.

Health and Wellness

We are looking for a Health and Wellness co-chair for next year. There will be a stipend for the staff member who wants to take this work on in collaboration with families. Some of the responsibilities include:

Facilitate meetings with a parent and work on the following issues

Recycling

Environment- bathrooms, windows

Cultural proficiency

Exercise/ yoga

stress reduction and mental health

Access to nature

We are seeing a large number of students with seasonal allergy symptoms in the nurse's office. The pollen count is very high and effecting even people who do not usually suffer from seasonal allergy symptoms. We have been giving children a "seasonal allergy" letter to take home to parents/guardians. These letters contain some helpful information on how to manage seasonal allergy symptoms. Some children may need medication that can be given at home with the advice of their pediatrician.  Seasonal allergies can be uncomfortable for some children but generally not dangerous, and they are not contagious. If you suspect a student is having allergy symptoms it can be helpful to send the child to the bathroom to wash their hands and face, especially if they have just come in from outside. Attached is Seasonal Allergy handout for teachers to read. As always if you suspect a student is having difficulty breathing or you have other concerns, please send the student to the nurse. 

BTU Representation SY 2016-2017

We have some changes in the voting for BTU Reps. We will be voting now in May for Building Reps due to changes in the BYLAWS with the BTU. We will be taking names of any and all staff who wish to run for BTU Reps now through Monday, May 23rd. The election will be held on Tuesday, May 24th. You may vote throughout the day and announcements will be given on Wednesday the 25th. Please submit your name if interested in an Email to any of our current reps.

A Summer Reading Book Swap is scheduled for Friday, June 17th! Students will be able to choose a “new to you” book or two from the donated collection, as part of Field Day activities. Over the next few weeks, a visit schedule will be developed, with teacher input. Look for notices in your mailboxes to send home with students, in both English and Spanish.

WE NEED BOOKS! 

Flower-covered donation boxes will be located in the upper and lower school lobbies. This is a great opportunity to review classroom libraries and donate gently used books that you no longer need. The deadline for donating books for the book swap is Thursday, June 15th. Please contact Caitlyn Gable (lower school) or Eileen Cronin (upper school) with any questions.

With the continuing good weather we need to remind teachers that if they leave their classroom to go outside or to another classroom they need let the front office know and put a sign on your door. Also, if teachers are interested in going outside, they have to wait until all recesses are over at 1:20pm also from 1:30-2:20 each day PACE uses the play structures. Shout out to Payne Schanski, Curley Tenacity Site Director, who was recently named the  “Under 30 Pro of the Year—2015” by the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA)—New England Division. This is a huge honor and we feel lucky to collaborate with Coach Payne and have him supporting our middle school students! Congrats!

Shout out to Liz Spring and Cassie Mountain for supporting a family with a tough decision today. You compassion and care for this child helped to build a trusting relationship between home and school. Your clear language and data to support your findings proved that we were recommending something we believe is best for a child. Thank you for the added time and attention you put into supporting a student and the family!

We are seeing a large number of students with seasonal allergy symptoms in the nurse's office. The pollen count is very high and effecting even people who do not usually suffer from seasonal allergy symptoms. We have been giving children a "seasonal allergy" letter to take home to parents/guardians. These letters contain some helpful information on how to manage seasonal allergy symptoms. Some children may need medication that can be given at home with the advice of their pediatrician.  Seasonal allergies can be uncomfortable for some children but generally not dangerous, and they are not contagious. If you suspect a student is having allergy symptoms it can be helpful to send the child to the bathroom to wash their hands and face, especially if they have just come in from outside. Attached is Seasonal Allergy handout for teachers to read. As always if you suspect a student is having difficulty breathing or you have other concerns, please send the student to the nurse.

For those of you who were not able to participate live in the Investigations 3 webinar on May 6th, that material has now been recorded, and can be found on the youtube link below. For those of you who were able to participate live, you may remember that power went out toward the end of the webinar, and this link takes you to an edited and complete version of that material. Shout Out

Shout out to Charles Tewksbury.  He has been amazing with the buses on Pershing Rd.  Charles texts the bus numbers to the main office in addition to guiding the teachers and students to bus locations.  He also helps support traffic patterns by directing the cars and buses.  He especially helps when they are trying to round the corners.  Charles is there with a smile and a positive thought in all kinds of weather.  Above all Charles is always ensuring our children's safety. Thanks!

Shout out to the CITY YEAR corps members that attended the picnic last Thursday. Your awesome presence, help with activities for the children and in general is greatly appreciated.  Also thank you for lending us your amplifier so we could have music during the event. We are so happy that you are part of our community and are willing to support everything we do for our students at the Curley.

Girls on the Run Practice 5k

The girls who have been participating in Girls on the Run this year are gearing up to run a 5K in June! To get ready for our 5K we plan to run a practice 5k around the Jamaica Pond on May 23rd @ 3PM.  The girls are hoping that you may be able to join us! You can run, walk, skip and hop with the girls around the pond, or you can come stand near one of our water stations and help cheer them on! We hope that you can come help support the girls!

BTU Representation SY 2016-2017

We have some changes in the voting for BTU Reps. We will be voting now in May for Building Reps due to changes in the BYLAWS with the BTU. We will be taking names of any and all staff who wish to run for BTU Reps now through Monday, May 23rd. The election will be held on Tuesday, May 24th. You may vote throughout the day and announcements will be given on Wednesday the 25th. Please submit your name if interested in an Email to any of our current reps.

Bring a Book – Take a Book

A Summer Reading Book Swap is scheduled for Friday, June 17th! Students will be able to choose a “new to you” book or two from the donated collection, as part of Field Day activities. Over the next few weeks, a visit schedule will be developed, with teacher input. Look for notices in your mailboxes to send home with students, in both English and Spanish.

WE NEED BOOKS! 

Flower-covered donation boxes will be located in the upper and lower school lobbies. This is a great opportunity to review classroom libraries and donate gently used books that you no longer need. The deadline for donating books for the book swap is Thursday, June 15th. Please contact Caitlyn Gable (lower school) or Eileen Cronin (upper school) with any questions.

K-4 Field Day

The K-4 Field Day will take place on Thursday, June 16th with a rain date of Friday, June 17th. Please email Mark Righini with and questions.

Term 4 Progress Reports

The Term 4 Progress Grading window for students in grades 6-8 will open May 16th to May 26th.

SPED Progress Reports

The Final round of SPED progress reports will open Monday, May 16th.  They will close on Thursday, June 9th.

PARCC/MCAS

We are back to MCAS this week! :) Be sure to review the documents below for all grade 5 & 8 test administrators. PARCC is starting back up and we want to remind everyone that teaching should be happening leading up to the test and after the test as well. Secretaries, counselors, and others need to know where students are for various reasons. With the continuing good weather we need to remind teachers that if they leave their classroom to go outside or to another classroom they need let the front office know and put a sign on your door. Also, if teachers are interested in going outside, they have to wait until all recesses are over at 1:20pm. K-2 Teachers

Teachers should move their students on the Lower School data wall by May 26th. There will be one more final move in June. The EOY BAS window is May 16th - June 16th. Teachers need to find instructional and hard levels for all students. The EOY Dibels window is May 23rd - June 10th.

If you know about a staff member who is out on a leave of absence, lost a family member, had a baby or recently got married please contact Candida Mundo. We want to make sure all staff know that we are supportive of them in times of happiness or sadness.

Field Trips

Spring is here and many classes are signed up for field trips in the coming weeks. Please do not forget to give the nurse's office and cafeteria staff 2 weeks notice for any field trips.

Shout Out

Shout out to Leida Arroyo for all her work organizing the LGBTQA Picnic for the JP Community! It was an amazing turnout of families, students, staff, neighbors and local politicians who came to support. Many families emailed and reached out to say that were sorry they had a conflict and could not attend. This was a great first effort and we hope to continue our work, support and advocacy on behalf of students, families and staff.

Notes from the Nurse

We are seeing a large number of students with seasonal allergy symptoms in the nurse's office. The pollen count is very high and effecting even people who do not usually suffer from seasonal allergy symptoms. We have been giving children a "seasonal allergy" letter to take home to parents/guardians. These letters contain some helpful information on how to manage seasonal allergy symptoms. Some children may need medication that can be given at home with the advice of their pediatrician.  Seasonal allergies can be uncomfortable for some children but generally not dangerous, and they are not contagious. If you suspect a student is having allergy symptoms it can be helpful to send the child to the bathroom to wash their hands and face, especially if they have just come in from outside. Attached is Seasonal Allergy handout for teachers to read. As always if you suspect a student is having difficulty breathing or you have other concerns, please send the student to the nurse.

Excellence for All
