Shout Out

Shout out to Eileen Cronin for securing and organizing materials to support the students in our guided reading groups!

City Year Grades 3-8

City Year would like to introduce you to an SEL initiative that invites students to recognize each other for showing that “Curley Cares.” All students in grades 3-8 are eligible to participate. The initiative asks students, alongside City Year AmeriCorps members, to act as “detectives” on the lookout to catch students around the school caring. A poster with pull-off tabs attached to its bottom will hang in every participating classroom. When students or a City Year see a classmate “caring,” and with teacher approval, they can rip off a tab, write the name and grade of the student who was caught caring, and place the filled-out tab in the manila envelope located next to the poster. Students should use Curley values (i.e. “I care about myself, my classmates, and my school”) to determine whether or not a student should receive a tab. We are asking teachers to introduce the initiative to participating classrooms, grades 3-8, the week of February 26th so students are prepared to start their search for caring classmates by March 5th. Guidelines both for students and teachers could be found here. City Year will collect and count all tabs by March 22nd. Recognized students will be entered into a raffle for various prizes, like a brand new backpack. We will announce raffle prize winners the week of March 26th. Our January share is coming up this Wednesday, 1/24! Please review the Shares expectations and rituals with your class. Attached here are the times for each share as well as the schedule for which classes are expected to share this week. Thank you!

Please join us for ILT on Wednesday, February 14th from 3:45pm-5:00pm in Room 101. All staff are welcome! Please bring the book Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain with you! All staff are welcome.

Please join us for the February School Site Council meeting on Tuesday, February 13th from 5:30pm-7:00pm in Room 209. All staff and families are welcome to attend.

CPT at a Glance

Thanks to the staff who have provided feedback we will have a weekly update about what should be covered at CPT. The CPT at a Glance document will be updated each week. This week is a climate week and your climate representative should have 40 minutes on the agenda. Teams may also continue to reach out to Lindsey Morgan for support with data analysis.

Girls on the Run

This spring we will bring back Girls on the Run at the Curley! The season will begin the week of March 20th. The culminating 5K takes place on June 9th. We need coaches! Practices will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:00 on the playing field. If you want to hear more about the coaching experience, talk to Meg Nason, Jenni Craman, Laura Shea, or Kelly Van Clief who coached our last GOTR team. Contact Meg Nason to join the team this spring.

Middle School Valentine's Dance

The Valentines Dance coming on Feb 16th. The dance will be used to fundraise for buses for Canobie Lake. For the dance, we are asking for your help. Please contact Nina Wessen and Maria Amy-Moreno with questions.

You can help us in the following ways:

• Dance admittance will be $3. Bracelets will be in your mailboxes by the week of Feb 12th. Please collect money and pass out bracelets on Friday, Feb. 16. If you would like, please drop off money and the amount fundraised to Nina in 209 and I can collect and give the money to Katie. 
• We are selling water bottles for $1 to further fundraise for Canobie. WE NEED YOUR HELP TO TELL STUDENTS THAT WATER WILL BE SOLD AT THE DANCE FOR $1. 
• There is a strict rule that students MAY NOT RUN in the gym during the dance. If caught running, students will be asked to leave. (We had a safety issue that occurred at the last dance). 
• We need more active supervisors during the dance. Please actively supervise and monitor the students during this time. We want to ensure the safety of our students and of the equipments. 
• Lastly, we will pass out music forms to all teachers on Monday. Please take the time to pass out these forms to your students and have them write in 1-2 appropriate songs that they would like to hear at the dance. We will not necessarily play every single song, but we will attempt to do so if the song is appropriate.

The middle of the year testing window is open from January 22nd to March 2nd. If you have running records that show a student is reading on or above your grade's instructional level benchmark, you do not need to do the BAS with them. If a student is reading below the instructional level benchmark, you need to do the BAS to find the highest instructional level and their hard level.
The levels are as follows:
K2 - on or above instructional C
1st grade - on or above instructional G
2nd grade - on or above instructional L

With this in mind, please refer to THIS LIST to see those students who have already received award(s) this school year. If you'd like to give more than 3 awards, please coordinate with your grade-level colleagues such as specialists or other staff. If it is for a larger group of students (such as a sports team, etc.) please email Kate (kdavis3@bostonpublicschools.org) directly. Please SUBMIT awards by 4: 00pm Monday, February 12 , 2018. Shout out to Ms. P who gives her all every single day and always remains patient and calm, despite how trying a day may be! You have the best ideas for classroom activities and bring so much positivity to our classroom! We are SOOOOO thankful for you!!!

Shout out to Ms DeMarco for always going out of her way to bring excitement to our classroom. The highlight of our week is when you are with us for Thankful Thursday writing each week!

The week of February 5th teams in grades 3-8 should schedule time for Lindsey Morgan to review STAR data. She has reach out to each team via email as well.  There are many data slides that will help to support this conversation. February - Black History Month

February marks the start of Black History Month. How will you address this with your students? How can you ensure that we are not glossing over it and only celebrating in February? Below is a resource that was shared from former Curley teacher, Layla Hijab Cable (laylahcable@gmail.com).

The National Black Lives Matter Week of Action in Our Schools is launching an online gallery for student and community work during the Week of Action: Feb. 5th - Feb. 9th. Calling all educators, youth workers, young people, students, caregivers, parents, dreamers, activists, revolutionaries! Join us in imagining the world and schools we want to see. Invite, share, and respond to the prompt:
“In a school where Black Lives Matter, we…”

Bulletin Boards Updated by Friday, February 9th 

Bulletin boards communicate the values of our school. Bulletin boards are a window into our classrooms that allow us to share the teaching and learning happening inside. Bulletin boards send a message to students that their work is important and valued here. Please update your bulletin board by Friday, February 9th. You must also include the Curley template which describes the learning your students are doing that links to the instructional focus.
