Shout Out

Shout out to Sylvia Rua on being chosen to receive a Bridge Builder Grant from the Martin Richard Foundation. Sylvia received a $500.00 grant to fund a community service project. With this project, she will be able to foster inclusion, equality, understanding, and trust in your community and beyond. Sylvia will be responsible for strengthening your community and promoting the values of the Martin Richard Foundation - kindness, sportsmanship, inclusion, and peace. Sylvia and her students will use the money to create care packages for families at Children's Hospital.

Shout out to Jesse Cardoso and his art students for beautifying our school space! It was amazing to see students working collaboratively and supporting each other as well as encouraging diversity.

Instructional Focus Review (IFR)

On Wednesday, March 7th we will host an Instructional Focus Review. Every school in Boston is hosting once per year. This is an opportunity for our ILT members and other leaders throughout the district to help us collect data on the progress of our Instructional Focus (To support students in expressing a clear, organized idea, teachers will plan culturally responsive and cognitively demanding learning experiences that include scaffolding to ensure access for all students). The team will be here from 8am-1pm and we will conduct observations across the school from 9:00am-10:30am. Thank you in advance for opening your practice be know that all data collected is not specific to a teacher, instead we are looking at trends across the school.

TNTP - Impact Survey

In December 2017 all teachers received a Survey from The New Teacher Project (TNTP) - Impact Survey. This data was recently shared back with us and we wanted to share it as a school. As an administrative team and with the leaders of ILT and Climate we have reviewed this data as well. You will receive this survey again in the spring and both sets of result help us to plan for next school year. Insight Survey Data

Walk For Hunger

Curley parent, Khara Burns, mother of 6th grader Dmitrius Sherrion, asked me to share this information about the Walk For Hunger. Project Bread is celebrating its 50th Walk for Hunger on Sunday, May 6, 2018 and I want to invite you to our big event. The money raised at the Walk each year funds hundreds of anti-hunger programs across Massachusetts, providing food-insecure children and families with nutritious meals.  The Curley’s participation would not only help the 1 in 10 people in our state who face hunger, but it’s also a wonderful opportunity to build school community, foster civic engagement, and encourage student leadership. LLI Materials Now Available in Upper School

Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) materials are now available in Ms. Arroyo’s room in the upper school. Lessons and books from the Blue kit (Levels C-N) and Red kit (Levels L-Q) may be borrowed to use as part of your intervention instruction for students reading below grade level. These materials are most effective when used in addition to daily guided reading lessons.
Ms. Arroyo uses this space for small group instruction daily, so please keep in mind the following schedule when picking up or returning materials. You can access materials during the following times:
Daily from 8:15 - 9:00
Monday: 8:15 - 9:45, 10:45 - 11:10, 12:45 - 2:10
Tuesday 11:50 - 2:10
Wednesday 11:50 - 2:10
Thursday: 12:45 - 2:10
Friday: 8:15 – 10:45, 1:30 – 3:05
Contact Ms. Arroyo for access before 8:15 and after 3:05.
Please be sure to follow the posted guidelines for checking out materials, and be sure to return and re-file materials in their appropriate box within three days of checking items out. Together we can assure that the LLI kits are complete and accessible to all. City Year Grades 3-8

City Year would like to introduce you to an SEL initiative that invites students to recognize each other for showing that “Curley Cares.” All students in grades 3-8 are eligible to participate. The initiative asks students, alongside City Year AmeriCorps members, to act as “detectives” on the lookout to catch students around the school caring. A poster with pull-off tabs attached to its bottom will hang in every participating classroom. When students or a City Year see a classmate “caring,” and with teacher approval, they can rip off a tab, write the name and grade of the student who was caught caring, and place the filled-out tab in the manila envelope located next to the poster. Students should use Curley values (i.e. “I care about myself, my classmates, and my school”) to determine whether or not a student should receive a tab. We are asking teachers to introduce the initiative to participating classrooms, grades 3-8, the week of February 26th so students are prepared to start their search for caring classmates by March 5th. Guidelines both for students and teachers could be found here. City Year will collect and count all tabs by March 22nd. Recognized students will be entered into a raffle for various prizes, like a brand new backpack. We will announce raffle prize winners the week of March 26th. Shout out to Kristen Mitchell for organizing the changing tables in the K0/K1 bathrooms! We are all very grateful for your organization and leadership in taking on this task!

Shout out to the Curley Girls Basketball Team for winning 36-15 over the McCormack Middle School! We hope you can cheer on the team next Tuesday for our home game.

BPS Operations Information

The forecast is calling for some heavy winds and significant rain (possible snow) from Thursday night - Saturday. Custodians have been instructed to check roof drains, exterior drains, catch basins, windows, etc. today before the storm hits. We ask you to please reach out to your food service staff, teachers, and school staff for their help in making sure all windows are secure. This could be particularly troublesome with the warm weather today. Small staff bathroom windows are areas we typically have issues with - they seem to be missed or forgotten. Thanks everyone for your attention to this - have a great rest of the week!

We are excited to share a free professional learning opportunity for your teachers. The Boston Educators Collaborative connects teachers throughout the city of Boston to share best practices and refine their instructional practice over five weeks. The courses are entirely teacher-led. Participants can receive PDP points or pay for UMass Boston graduate credit. Here is a direct link to the information on our website. The middle of the year testing window is open from January 22nd to March 2nd. If you have running records that show a student is reading on or above your grade's instructional level benchmark, you do not need to do the BAS with them. If a student is reading below the instructional level benchmark, you need to do the BAS to find the highest instructional level and their hard level.
The levels are as follows:
K2 - on or above instructional C
1st grade - on or above instructional G
2nd grade - on or above instructional L

Shout out to Rachel and Sam Childers for taking the initiative to organize the unruly Lost and Found area in the Lower School. Your willingness to take on this huge project, allowing others to more easily locate missing coats, gloves hats, mittens and more is greatly appreciated by all, and is a great example of "Curley Cares" in action!
