Shout Out

Shout out to Suzanne DeMarco for taking time to tour a school to further her understanding of programming. This additional time will be beneficial to students as we think about future placement needs to best meet the needs of our learners.

Bulletin Boards

It is that time again, please make sure to have your bulletin board updated with student work by Friday, February 8th. All bulletin boards should have the Curley template posted with it. This is a great project for a student teacher and/or a set of responsible students. It is important that things are stapled up in all corners. Please note that you can share whole group learning (number talk, sample of writing process, response to reading etc....) The work does have to be perfect we prefer authenticity. Bulletin Boards make our hallways feel warm and welcoming and help us celebrate our students.

STAR Reading Winter Benchmark (Grades 3-8 only)

The winter reading benchmark period is open from Monday, February 4th through Friday, February 8th. Testing should be scheduled during WIN block or other convenient time. All students, regardless of performance level, must take the STAR winter reading benchmark assessment. Students can access STAR Reading through Clever. Testing should take about 20 minutes and can be administered whole group.
The data we are collecting provides valuable insight into students’ growth as readers. Please remind students of the importance of this testing and be sure that students are provided a quiet, distraction-free environment, so that they can do their best.

Sickle Cell Disease Notice to Families

I am attaching the final Chronic Disease and Sickle Cell Disease letter (translated into 9 languages). These letters were developed as part of a legal complaint against the Boston Public Schools from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights. Madeline and Kathy will make enough copies for the whole school in both Spanish and English. These should be sent home on Monday, February 4th. The Next Curley Cares assemblies will be held Friday, February 15, 2019 so take a moment to recognize students who are doing their best to support the Curley Cares way.
Use the FEBRUARY 2019 FORM to submit names so students you work with can receive an award at our Friday, February 15, 2019 Curley Shares assemblies. If you'd like, please check out the list of students to review which students have already received awards this school year. Please SUBMIT awards by 4:00pm Monday, February 11, 2019.

The Educator of the Year award recognizes the exceptional educators who go above and beyond to impact the lives of Boston Public Schools students. 2nd Annual Half Way to Last Day Party

We are pleased to announce our 2nd Annual Half Way to Last Day Party! Please join us at Doyle's to celebrate day 90 of school on Friday, March 1st from 4pm-8pm. The cost is $20 per person and includes foods, prizes and the best 90's playlist!

This is a great opportunity to relax and enjoy time with your colleagues!

African American History Assembly

The African American History assembly is scheduled for Thursday, March 14th at 9am. We especially would love to have classroom teachers participate with essays, historical figure reenactments or other kinds of celebratory contributions. If you are interested please contact Kim Taylor Knight at storyinabox@gmail.com. We are making this a "no meeting" committee to participate you only need to let us know.

Color Cycle

In one of the first steps towards Zero Waste at the Curley, we are reigniting our previous efforts to recycle old markers. Crayola has a program, ColorCycle, which takes back old markers (any type and brand!) and turns them into green energy. http://www.crayola.com/colorcycle All you need to do is start collecting and the share this initiative with students and families. Attached are letters that can be sent home to families (we will get a hard copy in all mailboxes in the next few days). Collection bins are located in both offices. MOY BAS Info for grades K2, 1st, and 2nd

If you have running records that show a student is reading on or above your grade's instructional level benchmark, you do not need to do the BAS with them. If a student is reading below the instructional level benchmark, you need to do the BAS to find the highest instructional level and their hard level. See table below in blog for BAS dates.

CPT Cycle January 3rd - March 1st

Thank you to the teachers who provided feedback from the first 70 days of school regarding CPT time. We have heard that you are supportive of the structure but need more time to implement the CPT Cycles within the Curley Work Plan. We would like to propose that from 1/3/19-3/1/19 that teams will complete a CPT Cycle based on Interim 2 data (ELA for everyone but middle school math and science) as well as hold one climate meeting. Everyone will begin with CPT 1 in 2019. This will give teams between 6-8 CPT meetings (depending on days off) as well as one 2 hour PD on 1/24/19 to complete these items. Below are sample agendas for each CPT meeting. Team have the autonomy to map out these weeks so they can complete the full cycle by 3/1/19. See ILT representatives for more details.

• CPT #1 - Looking at Data/Focus students - Review most recent forms of data (ELA Interim 2, Lexia etc…) in order to understand where your students are in connection to the grade level learning standards. Choose a focus standard/area for the upcoming unit plan.
• CPT #2 - Unit Plan Overview - Preview the upcoming unit, specifically focus on where within this unit the focus standard/area you choose during CPT 1 and where it can be explicitly taught.
• CPT #3 - Plan Lesson - Collaboratively plan one lesson as a team that relates to the focus standard/area chosen during CPT 1.
• CPT #4 - LASW - All team members bring focus student work for the collaboratively planned lesson (CPT 3) and complete the protocol.
• CPT #5 - Reflection - Take time to reflect on this CPT cycle. 
• Climate Meeting - TBD

NAEP Testing

The Curley K-8 School will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on 2/25/18 (4th grade) and 2/26/18 (8th grade). NAEP is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics. The results are released as The Nation’s Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents, policymakers, and the public.
Students in 4th and 8th grade will/may take an assessment in mathematics or reading. In addition to subject-area questions, NAEP survey questionnaires are voluntarily completed by students. The questionnaires provide valuable information about participating students’ educational experiences and opportunities to learn both in and out of the classroom. More information about NAEP survey questionnaires is available at https://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/parents under the section “What Questions Are on the Test?”
The assessment takes about 120 minutes for most students, including transition time and directions. Please contact Mr. Diaz if you have any questions or concerns.

Field Trip Request Procedure

All field trips requests should be submitted in the following way, check out this powerpoint for additional information on the steps.

• Fill out electronic form at least 2 weeks in advance. This link will be available in the blog daily. Field Trip Request Form
• Print your form submission. 
• Email list of students attending to nurses. 
• Get nurse and cafeteria signature at least 2 weeks in advance. They can sign anywhere at the bottom of your page. 
• Turn in to either main office. 
• Pass out permission slips and have students return. (English p.12, Other Languages)
• The SPC has allotted each grade level $500 to put towards field trips; any questions should be send to treasurer@curleyk8.com.

Shout out to Waverly Kidd for leading the ACCESS testing window as out LATF. This is an immense amount of work and we were able to test all of our students in this short window! Thank you for the clear communication during this process.

Shout out to all Curley Staff who tested during the ACCESS window. Teachers made sure that students had what they needed, were focused and present in school. Thank you for your efforts in making this a smooth process for our community!

Shout to Sugeily Santos for completing High School Choices for all 8th graders! She made it possible with care, skills, motivation, and tireless determination!

Shout out to Megan Nason for taking a lead in building our SEL groups. And for the time she invested in learning and sharing her knowledge of PEAR data.

Shout out to Alicia Green Gennaro for being so caring. Last week we had a late bus in the afternoon and she went to her classroom and brought the group granola bars so they could have a snack while they waited! The students really appreciated the treat! Thanks!

Shout out to Lindsey Wright for being a fierce advocate for her students. Your persistence, determination and follow through show us all how much you care!

Shout out to Traka Smith, Carolyn Silva-Brisbane, Laura Shea, Emily Beck, Myrrtha Dupoux, Lourdes Vasquez and Matthew Tallent, Team K2, for hosting a showcase of learning for students and and families. It was a beautiful display of how our students learn through art, science, literacy, math and other engaging centers! MOY BAS Info for grades K2, 1st, and 2nd

If you have running records that show a student is reading on or above your grade's instructional level benchmark, you do not need to do the BAS with them. If a student is reading below the instructional level benchmark, you need to do the BAS to find the highest instructional level and their hard level. See table below in blog for BAS dates.

CPT Cycle January 3rd - March 1st

Thank you to the teachers who provided feedback from the first 70 days of school regarding CPT time. We have heard that you are supportive of the structure but need more time to implement the CPT Cycles within the Curley Work Plan. We would like to propose that from 1/3/19-3/1/19 that teams will complete a CPT Cycle based on Interim 2 data (ELA for everyone but middle school math and science) as well as hold one climate meeting. Everyone will begin with CPT 1 in 2019. This will give teams between 6-8 CPT meetings (depending on days off) as well as one 2 hour PD on 1/24/19 to complete these items. Below are sample agendas for each CPT meeting. Team have the autonomy to map out these weeks so they can complete the full cycle by 3/1/19. See ILT representatives for more details.

• CPT #1 - Looking at Data/Focus students - Review most recent forms of data (ELA Interim 2, Lexia etc…) in order to understand where your students are in connection to the grade level learning standards. Choose a focus standard/area for the upcoming unit plan.
• CPT #2 - Unit Plan Overview - Preview the upcoming unit, specifically focus on where within this unit the focus standard/area you choose during CPT 1 and where it can be explicitly taught.
• CPT #3 - Plan Lesson - Collaboratively plan one lesson as a team that relates to the focus standard/area chosen during CPT 1.
• CPT #4 - LASW - All team members bring focus student work for the collaboratively planned lesson (CPT 3) and complete the protocol.
• CPT #5 - Reflection - Take time to reflect on this CPT cycle. 
• Climate Meeting - TBD

NAEP Testing

The Curley K-8 School will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on 2/25/18 (4th grade) and 2/26/18 (8th grade). NAEP is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics. The results are released as The Nation’s Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents, policymakers, and the public.
Students in 4th and 8th grade will/may take an assessment in mathematics or reading. In addition to subject-area questions, NAEP survey questionnaires are voluntarily completed by students. The questionnaires provide valuable information about participating students’ educational experiences and opportunities to learn both in and out of the classroom. More information about NAEP survey questionnaires is available at https://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/parents under the section “What Questions Are on the Test?”
The assessment takes about 120 minutes for most students, including transition time and directions. Please contact Mr. Diaz if you have any questions or concerns.

Field Trip Request Procedure

All field trips requests should be submitted in the following way, check out this powerpoint for additional information on the steps.

• Fill out electronic form at least 2 weeks in advance. This link will be available in the blog daily. Field Trip Request Form
• Print your form submission. 
• Email list of students attending to nurses. 
• Get nurse and cafeteria signature at least 2 weeks in advance. They can sign anywhere at the bottom of your page. 
• Turn in to either main office. 
• Pass out permission slips and have students return. (English p.12, Other Languages)
• The SPC has allotted each grade level $500 to put towards field trips; any questions should be send to treasurer@curleyk8.com.

Sick Day Procedure (teachers and paraprofessionals)

• If it is after 6:30am, also send an email to Katie Grassa, David Diaz and the secretary.
