Shout Out

Shout out to Maria Ploessl on her last day as the Curley City Year Impact Manager. Thank you for all your have done for our school. We have truly enjoyed our partnership with City Year in part because of your ability to build relationships between the organization and our school. You are a strong leader who has been able to support teachers and Corps Members. Your smile, kindness towards others and Minnesota accent will be missed. Best of luck to you in all your future endeavors and remember that you will always be considered a Curley Flying Lion!

Outdoor Log

Please help us collect information about our outdoor spaces.  If you see something dangerous (needles, dead animals, etc) please use the Environmental Safety Concerns binders in the main offices to log what you found.  Thanks for your help!

Hat Day

We are scheduled to have our first annual Curley K-8 School Hat Day to support our 8th Graders’ Moving On Ceremony on Friday, June 3.  All students and staff members who purchase a bracelet for $1 will be permitted to wear their favorite hat all day next Friday.  Mr. Melzer is putting envelopes in your mailboxes which should include enough fliers and bracelets for the students in your homeroom class.  If a mistake was made or if you need more for the adults in your class, please contact him directly at cmelzer@bostonpublicschools.org. Please consider marking bracelets with a sharpie to distribute on Friday so no students lose theirs.  Thanks for supporting our 8th Graders’ celebration!​

June 2016 Curley Cares Student Awards

Use this form to recognize the students we work with who exhibit consistent or improved understanding of the Curley Cares rules as demonstrated by a specific deed, general conduct, overall academic perseverance and/or improvement, or some other form of participation.

Awards will be presented during the Curley Shares assemblies on Thursday, June 2, 2016. Submissions are due Tuesday, May 31, 2016 ​

If you would like to give more than 3 awards, please email Kate Davis directly by Friday, May 27 with the extra name(s), award type(s), and what they did to earn the award, and I will add the names to the list. Here is the list of students who have won awards so far this year.

EOY Assessments for grades 3-8

The End of Year Assessments are due June 15, 2016. Please schedule your EOY testing dates for Math and ELA by grade level and enter the information on the following link EOY Schedule Spreadsheet. I will prepare bins by homeroom and I will have them ready the day before your administer the assessment. Please contact Mr. Diaz if you have any questions.

ELA Spring Benchmark Period – Grades 3-8

The ELA spring benchmark assessment for grades 3-8 should be conducted between May 31^st and June 10th.  Grades 3-6 will administer DIBELS/DAZE Benchmark 3, and grades 7 and 8 will administer MAZE Benchmark 3. All testing materials will be distributed to teachers this week, and assessment results should be entered into the WIN Data spreadsheet on the Google drive as soon as possible, but no later than June 10th. Please contact Eileen Cronin for any questions regarding the upcoming benchmarking activities.

Health and Wellness

We are looking for a Health and Wellness co-chair for next year. There will be a stipend for the staff member who wants to take this work on in collaboration with families. Some of the responsibilities include:

Facilitate meetings with a parent and work on the following issues

Recycling

Environment- bathrooms, windows

Cultural proficiency

Exercise/ yoga

stress reduction and mental health

Access to nature

Notes from the Nurse

We are seeing a large number of students with seasonal allergy symptoms in the nurse's office. The pollen count is very high and effecting even people who do not usually suffer from seasonal allergy symptoms. We have been giving children a "seasonal allergy" letter to take home to parents/guardians. These letters contain some helpful information on how to manage seasonal allergy symptoms. Some children may need medication that can be given at home with the advice of their pediatrician.  Seasonal allergies can be uncomfortable for some children but generally not dangerous, and they are not contagious. If you suspect a student is having allergy symptoms it can be helpful to send the child to the bathroom to wash their hands and face, especially if they have just come in from outside. Attached is Seasonal Allergy handout for teachers to read. As always if you suspect a student is having difficulty breathing or you have other concerns, please send the student to the nurse. 

BTU Representation SY 2016-2017

We have some changes in the voting for BTU Reps. We will be voting now in May for Building Reps due to changes in the BYLAWS with the BTU. We will be taking names of any and all staff who wish to run for BTU Reps now through Monday, May 23rd. The election will be held on Tuesday, May 24th. You may vote throughout the day and announcements will be given on Wednesday the 25th. Please submit your name if interested in an Email to any of our current reps.

Bring a Book – Take a Book

A Summer Reading Book Swap is scheduled for Friday, June 17th! Students will be able to choose a “new to you” book or two from the donated collection, as part of Field Day activities. Over the next few weeks, a visit schedule will be developed, with teacher input. Look for notices in your mailboxes to send home with students, in both English and Spanish.

WE NEED BOOKS! 

Flower-covered donation boxes will be located in the upper and lower school lobbies. This is a great opportunity to review classroom libraries and donate gently used books that you no longer need. The deadline for donating books for the book swap is Thursday, June 15th. Please contact Caitlyn Gable (lower school) or Eileen Cronin (upper school) with any questions.

K-4 Field Day

The K-4 Field Day will take place on Thursday, June 16th with a rain date of Friday, June 17th. Please email Mark Righini with and questions.

SPED Progress Reports

The Final round of SPED progress reports will open Monday, May 16th.  They will close on Thursday, June 9th.

Curley Shares

Out final Curley Shares for the year will be on Thursday, June 2nd. Thanks to those who share feedback about the change in days.

Finger Printing

Just a reminder to all staff that finger printing must be completed by July 30th. Please see the BTU Reps if you have any questions and here is a website for your reference as well www.identogo.com/fp/massachusetts.aspx. Also the code you need is 00350000.

Retention

Please email Katie Grassa if you are considering retention for a student. She will meet with you and map out next steps. This meeting must occur by Friday, May 27th.

Outside Use

Secretaries, counselors, and others need to know where students are for various reasons. With the continuing good weather we need to remind teachers that if they leave their classroom to go outside or to another classroom they need let the front office know and put a sign on your door. Also, if teachers are interested in going outside, they have to wait until all recesses are over at 1:20pm also from 1:30-2:20 each day PACE uses the play structures. K-2 Teachers

Teachers should move their students on the Lower School data wall by May 26th. There will be one more final move in June. The EOY BAS window is May 16th - June 16th. Teachers need to find instructional and hard levels for all students. The EOY Dibels window is May 23rd - June 10th.

Curley Cares

If you know about a staff member who is out on a leave of absence, lost a family member, had a baby or recently got married please contact Candida Mundo. We want to make sure all staff know that we are supportive of them in times of happiness or sadness.

Field Trips

Spring is here and many classes are signed up for field trips in the coming weeks. Please do not forget to give the nurse's office and cafeteria staff 2 weeks notice for any field trips.
