Important Special Education Meeting

The special education department at the Curley needs to share important information with you regarding our upcoming progress reports that are due on March 17th. We are offering 4 different meeting times before the report due date in order to help you prepare for progress notes. At this meeting we will review what legally needs to be in progress reports and show exemplars. As a special educator we need you to attend one of these meetings. We have planned meetings during various PD times in order to help accommodate everyone. For 3 teach teams, at least one member needs to attend and then be able to share information with the other team teachers. Please email your coordinator if you have difficulty attending one of these meetings. This meeting is necessary for all special education teachers, despite programing placement (ABA, SAR, Pull out, Inclusion, etc.) Related service providers are encouraged to attend.

Willie Wonka School Performances

For this year’s Disney Musicals in Schools production, students in Grades 3, 4 and 5 will perform Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. School performances will take place on March 24 and 25 at 9:00 am and 1:45 pm. Homeroom teachers, please use this form to indicate your first, second and third choices for the performance you would like your students to attend. We will make every effort to give everyone their preferred choice. If you do not submit a form, your class will be scheduled for a performance time. Please submit forms by Monday, March 16. Thank you for your support of our production and we look forward to seeing you at the show!!

Home Basketball Games

We will have several home basketball games in the coming weeks. Students, staff and families all want to enjoy these opportunities. We have a plan to each games moving forward. If staff are agreeing to supervise students at the Basketball Game they must submit this form for EACH student by NOON on the day of the home game. The remaining home games are:

Staff are agreeing to remain with students leading up to the start of the game, during the game and ensuring they exit the building directly after the game. All spectators will watch from the balcony and will enter from the 2nd Floor. The only students in the gym (1st floor) are the players themselves.

Boston Public Schools: Student Feedback Survey grades 3-8

The Curley K-8 School will be administering the Student Feedback Survey March 9th - March 27th for students in grades 3-8. Students will be randomly provided one of six versions of the MCIEA Culture & Climate Survey. Each survey contains 2/3 of the Culture & Climate questions and will take about 15 minutes to complete. Students will also take a survey about 2 randomly selected teachers. Each survey will take about 10 minutes to complete. As a result, students will need about 35 minutes to complete the entire survey.
How will students take the survey?
• All surveys are available online.
• Students will log-in with the Clever account.
• Students may use desktops, laptops, netbooks, Chromebooks, tablets and/or mobile devices to access the survey.
• All appropriate and available accommodations can be used to assist students with disabilities.
• Languages available: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Cape Verdean Creole, Haitian Creole, Somali, and Chinese.

Once you meet with your team please email Mr. Diaz the dates and times your planning to administer the survey to your students.

March, 2020 Curley Cares Student Awards

Use this form to recognize up to three of the students you work with who exhibit consistent or improved understanding of the Curley Cares rules as demonstrated by a specific deed, general conduct, overall academic perseverance and/or improvement, or some other form of participation.
With this in mind PLEASE take a moment to recognize students who are doing their best to support the Curley Cares way.
Please use the MARCH 2020 FORM (also included below) to submit names so that the students you work can receive an award at our Wednesday, March 18, 2020 Curley Shares assemblies. Come represent your grade band as we update the “Big Six” Lessons. This year we implemented our draft of the “Big Six” lessons. Now, as we revisit the lessons, we need your feedback to ensure the lessons support teacher needs and students’ understanding and growth. Climate will be meeting in the upper school room 214 on the following dates. There will be snacks.

ELA Interim 3

Thank you to all who provided quick feedback to the interim 3 scheduled. The schedule has been updated and can be found here. ELA Interim 3. We are still tweaking the proctor schedule and will have it ready ASAP. Please note, all open response questions need to be scored in illuminate prior to the PD on Thursday, March 12th. Retention

We are 4 months away from wrapping up SY 2019-2020. As we get closer to the end of the year, we must begin thinking about those students who may not meet the requirements to move on to the next grade level. Although it's not time for Cristina or Sugeily to hold retention meetings with parents and admin, we do want to ask that you begin having conversations with parents whose children you're thinking might be good candidates for retention. Also this is the time to refer them to SST. Students should not be on a list for retention if they have not be referred to SST. As you speak with parents, please highlight two main points: their child is at-risk of being retained and these next few months we will be evaluating your child's progress and challenges so together we can make a determination. You also want to stress to parents that you will continue to communicate with them throughout the process. As always, please document parent contact on SIS under the document tab.  If you have any questions please contact Sugeily and Cristina.

BPS 24/7 Respect Program

BPS will be implementing the 24/7 respect program in all 6th-grade classrooms during the week of March 9 through 13 of 2020. In an effort to address bias-based conduct and sexual misconduct at school and beyond, the Office of Equity has created a curriculum to help you discuss this topic with your students. Attached you will find the following items for the 24/7 Respect program.

• The 24/7 Respect Lesson Plan and Supplementary Materials
• Guidance for English Learners produced by the Office of English Learners and the Office of Opportunity Gaps
• Guidance for working with diverse learners from the Office of Special Education

Save the Date! Curley Winter Social Dinner & Auction

Join the Curley community for an evening of grown-up fun at Bella Luna Restaurant on Thursday, March 19th from 6:00-9:00pm. Bid on great items donated by area businesses and Curley families and help raise money for enrichment programs, arts activities, field trips, and new technology at the Curley.
 Tickets are $25 each and include a pizza buffet dinner with salad. Cash bar.
 Childcare, provided by CASP, will be available upstairs at the Children’s Music Center of JP for $12 per child (ages 4 and up) and include pizza and veggies for dinner.

Teacher Leadership Fund: What challenge do you want to solve?

We are excited to announce the call for proposals for year three of the Teacher Leadership Fund a feature of our contract which grants teams of educators up to $15,000 to create and share solutions which improve the learning and well-being of our most marginalized students.  This year, we have two types of grants available.

• Action Grants will support teams interested in designing and implementing an intervention to address a challenge impacting marginalized students.
• Study Grants will support teams interested in learning more about the various dimensions of an identified challenge impacting marginalized students and developing an action plan based on that learning.

• Talk to the K2 if you want to know more. They have the grant this year.

Class Coverage

We are working on a new system for class coverage. Teachers and paras will be responsible for submitting coverage in this form and they will be paid out monthly. We can only pay out one month at a time, we cannot back pay if the time is not submitted and we cannot pay in advance for time. The time submitted will be crossed checked with the IEP meeting schedule as well as our staff absence list on ESS. There should be direct correlation between information sources before coverage is approved and entered to payroll. All forms are due by 5pm on the last day of the month. Also this form was co-created by the School Leadership Team in consultation with our BTU reps as well as the BTU elected officials centrally.

What can Teachers be paid for?
* Missed P&Ds
* Missed SEIMS blocks (max 90 min per week only for SPED teachers with a majority secondary 6-8 caseload)

What can't Teachers be paid for?
* Missed lunches

What are Paraprofessionals paid for?
* Covering when a teacher is absent, late or leaving early. (If there is more than one para in the room the paras need to divide the time up amongst themselves; they can not all be paid the full time and the total cannot exceed 6 hours in one day.)
* Covering their classroom during an IEP meeting. (1 to 1 Paraprofessionals can only receive payment for class coverage if their student is absent.)

What can't Paraprofessionals be paid for?
* Testing students as part of their IEP accommodations.
* Working through their lunch break.
* Coming in early or staying late.
* If a sub is assigned to the classroom.

SST

In order to submit a referral, please complete the google form. All materials can be found in the drive. Once a referral form is submitted, you will hear from a member of the SST team regarding next steps. 

Middle School Detention

Middle School Detention is every Tuesday from 3:15 - 4:15. Please use this link to record students assigned to detention. Students will earn detention for the following reasons:

· Refusal to turn in their cellphone

· Being in the hallways without a pass

· Arriving late to class without a pass

Next year we will hold 30 hours of professional development for teachers and 6 hours for para professionals. Below are the dates and times for the year. You can also find info on next years Draft Work Plan Calendar. The PD are not a draft but other information will be added throughout the summer and school year.

Field Trip Request Procedure

All field trips requests should be submitted in the following way, check out this powerpoint for additional information on the steps.

• Fill out electronic form at least 2 weeks in advance. This link will be available in the blog daily. Field Trip Request Form
• Print your form submission. 
• Email list of students attending to nurses. 
• Get nurse and cafeteria signature at least 2 weeks in advance. They can sign anywhere at the bottom of your page. 
• Turn in to either main office. 
• Pass out permission slips and have students return. (English p.12, Other Languages)
• The SPC has allotted each grade level $500 to put towards field trips; any questions should be send to treasurer@curleyk8.com.

Sick Day Procedure (teachers and paraprofessionals)

• Call/text Katie Grassa at 857-265-4954 immediately, no matter how late/early Enter the absence in SubCentral (teachers only). Link: https://bostonps.eschoolsolutions.com/logOnInitAction.do
• Enter absence on Boston Employees Self Service
