Shout Out

Shout out to Caitlyn Gable and Waverly Kidd for leading the adults ESL class for families over the last 13 weeks! The families felt supported by you both and were thrilled to have an opportunity to learn and grow. Thanks also to Blanca Pereira for providing day care so the families could focus on learning each Thursday evening.

Shout out to Craig Melzer, Alissa Ferro and Adrian Ward-Jackson for spending their Saturday redecorating the auditorium for the 8th grade moving on ceremony. You truly CARE and are dedicated to our students. Thank you for your efforts today!

SY 2018-2019 Top Ten Highlights of SY 2017-2018

Every year we like to wrap up and celebrate our successes as a community. While their are an infinite amount of successes for staff, students and families here are the top ten high lights this year!

10. Partnering with BTU and BPS Central Office to train teacher facilitators. Having teachers lead portions of CPT and PD as well as reading and learning through a common text, Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain.

9. Our early childhood team collaborating and prepping for NAEYC Re-accreditation. We had a perfectly submitted portfolio and the assessor was impressed with classroom instruction!

8. We survived a full year of a longer school day. Adding 40 minutes to our day changed our schedule, planning time, commutes home from school etc...

7. Watching our library transform from a room with leftover furniture and boxes piled high to a room filled with new books, fresh paint and our newest staff member leading the charge to open this space for all our students. We even had a visit from a Caldecott Award Winning Author, Javaka Steptoe. We look forward to the opening day in September!

6. Adding additional SEL supports across our school such as Open Circle, and acceptance into CBHM, an additional guidance counselor and an Advisory pilot in middle school. Putting SEL in the forefront of what we do to best serve our students.

5. Halfway to last day party on day 90 of school this year. Great to see so many staff out enjoying each others company and dancing and singing to their favorite 90's tunes!

4. Hosting our (first in a while) Black History celebration that included our school talent in art, music, dance and fashion. It was a collaborative plan between teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, students and families.

3. Middle school overnight trips to building trust and teamwork amongst students and staff. This year all students had an opportunity to earn a space to attend Thompson Island or a NH camping trip. This is a great opportunity for our students to grow and learn with one another outside of our building.

2. Our new windows and doors have restored the Curley back to its 1931 charm. We love having shades to block out the sun too. We survived the dust, moving of furniture and fall without shades!

The number 1 highlight from SY 2017-2018 was our fall fundraiser for Puerto Rico and other hurricane victims. Our community showed how much they CARE when we raised thousands of dollars to donate to those in need and shipped thousands of dollars worth of items as well. We modeled, We Care About Each Other, as a whole school community!

Early Release June 27 & 28

Students will be dismissed at 1:00 pm on the last two days of school -- June 27 and 28. Teachers and paras work a full day on Wednesday & Thursday, and lunch will be served on both days to students. Please take a moment to review the schedule for those two days, and reach out to David Diaz with questions or concerns. We will host a staff event on Wednesday at 1:30pm details will follow. (Hint: It is edible and their will be gluten free and vegan options.)

End Of Year Party!

Join us as we celebrate retirees Janet Zablocki & Pauline Skelton (Lunch Monitors) and others leaving the Curley this year. There will be food, fun and maybe even some dancing.

Moving On Ceremonies

We look forward to celebrate with students and families as they move on to the next grade. Below are the dates of the events for the next week:

• 6/25 Grade 8 - 10am in auditorium and afterwards on the playing field

Lemonade Day with Ms. Wright & Ms. P's Class

My class has been learning about managing & counting money, being polite & focused while working jobs, and reading books that taught us about financial literacy. You may have seen them delivering snacks throughout the building this year! We just hosted an author who taught us about what it means to be an entrepreneur and we are feeling extra inspired. We are having a lemonade stand on Monday 6/25 from 9:30 - 12. Last year we raised $350 for the school library! This year we will have two stands and are raising money for the MSPCA Animal Shelter in JP.
If you would like to bring your class out for lemonade on Monday, we would love to serve you some ice cold lemonade!
If you are interested (#1 THANK YOU!) and #2 please bring your class out to the stand #2 on the playing field (by CASP entrance) on Monday, 6/25 between 9:30 - 11:00. We are hoping to sell to 8th grade graduation families from 11:00 - 12:00.

21st Century Furniture Delivery

There was not a delivery of furniture last week, as was expected. We have contacted the office and are awaiting a response. Before you leave for the summer, you can make sure your room is prepared to receive new furniture by taking the following steps:

• Place all items to be removed on the corridor wall (touching the hallway) 
• Place items to stay on window wall 
• Place surplus tag on all items to be removed (see email from Lindsey with tags, extra copies available in office) 
• Place surplus tag on outside of door

Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain

Please be sure to bring this home with you over the summer. We will have summer reading to prepare for PD in August. More details will follow.

Summer Reading - 2018

Summer Reading packets, including the Summer Reading pledge, Reading Log, and Summer Reading Bingo are now being distributed to all classroom teachers. Please contact Eileen Cronin (Gr. 3-8) and Caitlyn Gable (Gr. K-2) if you have questions or have not received packets by June 20th.

Updated Room Assignments for SY 2018-2019

Thank you all for your thoughtful feedback and ideas around space in this school. We have made adjustments to the spaces based on this feedback. Please know that we are also requesting some facilities updates to improve the conditions in many of these spaces as well. The End of Year Checklist is updated for this year. Please review the document and reach out to the admin team if you have any questions. This should be completed, signed and submitted to Katie Grassa before staff leave on June 28th.

End of School Year Reminders

We’re getting into the final days of the school year, and it’s more important than ever to make sure we’re holding students to the same expectations as the beginning of the year. Remember when you have students in the outdoor spaces, they need to be monitored at all times. Be mindful of placement of adults so that you can see all students. (If you’re on the field, you probably can’t see students at the basketball court...) Also, please ensure that you are on time and present for all duties. This is important for student safety. Thank you! We can do this!

BTU Voting Results

• We voted to redistribute the 6 hours from 1/2/19 
• We voted to hold our Fall Open House on Thursday, September 27th from 5pm-7pm 
• We voted for Option 2 (24 hours): Professional Development on August 28th and 29th from 8am to 3pm (14 hours) AND five (5) 2-hour sessions on the following Thursdays from 3:45 to 5:45 pm: 10/4, 11/1, 12/13, 1/31, 3/7 with a make-up day on 4/4 (in case of snow). 
• Please feel free to contact your BTU representative with any questions! 

New Field Trip Request Procedure

Starting Monday, 3/12/28, all field trips requests should be submitted in the following way. If you have already submitted a paper previously, that is ok, but all new requests should be done in this way. Check out this powerpoint for additional information on the steps.

• Fill out electronic form at least 2 weeks in advance. This link will be available in the blog daily. Field Trip Request Form
• Print your form submission. 
• Email list of students attending to nurses. 
• Get nurse and cafeteria signature at least 2 weeks in advance. They can sign anywhere at the bottom of your page. 
• Turn in to either main office. 
• Pass out permission slips and have students return. (English p.12, Other Languages)
