Shout out to Melanie Barone, Jessica Burque, and Ms. D in the library for their flexibility and support our students and team during MCAS testing this week. Thank you!!! 

Shout out to Mrs. Locke, Mrs. Kidd, Mrs. Garcia and all their 2nd Grade Students for putting on the Wax Museum of Famous Latin Americans. They did a beautiful job of creating a realistic museum experience for staff and parents complete with ushers and refreshments! The students did a fabulous job of staying in character and delivering inspiring speeches about the historic figures that they played. We were amazed and inspired! Second grade Wax Museum: what a gem of a project! Your students exulted confidence and pride! 

 

Shout out to the Grade 3 Team for supporting a colleague when she fell ill last week. Your support and generosity are well appreciated. Also thank you to Ms. Cronin for giving her a ride when She most needed it. Thanks!

Shout out to the Lower School greetings crew with our lovely daily guess grandmother Alma! Guaranteed smiles in rain, snow, or sunshine! Thanks for making it a fun duty everyday!

 

Shout out to Leah Travers, Candida Mundo, Janet McDavitt, Laura Merdkhanian, Jenny Goldstein, Eva Banks, Lindsey Morgan, Waverly Kidd and Hadley Keohane for making the Biblioburro Fiesta a reality. We loved hosting the SLIFE students on Friday and were especially excited to have Yordany read the Spanish language version of the book to our class. Thanks as well to the upper school teachers who sent older siblings to join in on the fun!

BTU Vote

Here are the details regarding the BTU vote to be held next week:
We will be holding two (2) votes next Thursday to determine PD hours for the 2019-20 school year. The first vote will be about holding PD on January 2, 2020 or distributing the six (6) hours throughout the school year. Ballots will be available at arrival (7:00-9:00), in each of the main offices. The second vote will be open from 2:00-3:45 before our afternoon PD, also in each of the main offices. This vote will be to determine distribution of the remaining PD hours. Please be sure to cast your votes in both the morning and afternoon.

Curley Up and Read, Curley! Week 5 Update

The demands of MCAS did not deter students in keeping the momentum going with our reading challenge! Grade 3 came fighting back this week, taking the lead again, reaching 49.6% of their AR goal, with Grade 4 close at their heels with a strong 47.7%, followed by Grade 5, with a respectable 42.6% of their independent reading target.

April 2019 Curley Shares Awards

The next Curley Cares assemblies will be held Friday, April 26, 2019 so take a moment to recognize students who are doing their best to support the Curley Cares way.
Use the APRIL 2019 FORM to submit names so students you work with can receive an award at our Friday, April 26, 2019 Curley Shares assemblies. It is the general intent that most, if not all, Curley students receive an award during the school year. Positive reinforcement of even small improvements can sometimes make a big difference.
Please SUBMIT awards by 7:00pm Monday, April 22, 2019.

Teach Next Year Interviews

Please email Kim Daly (kdaly@bostonpublicschools.org) if you are interested in a Teach Next Year intern from UMASS Boston for the 2019-20 school year.

• Criteria for becoming a mentors is three full years of experience under appropriate license, appropriate initial or professional license for endorsement being sought by the candidate, summative performance rating of Proficient or Exemplary on most recent evaluation and commitment from school building administration.
• Early Childhood (K-2) interns teach half the year in kindergarten and half the year in a first or second grade class therefore are not guaranteed a year long placement. Grades 3-5 candidates teach the entire year in one class. There are supposedly middle school candidates, but I have not heard what subjects, I will reach out when I know.
• Interested mentors should be available to interview potential candidates on Tuesday, April 23rd at 3:30 in Room 114. Attending the interview process does not guarantee a placement for next year.

Student School Climate Surveys

I'm reaching out to provide you with some information about student surveys that we must administer by April 12. I apologize for the short-notice, but we will be administering these surveys to students in the afternoon on days they take MCAS. That way, each classroom is already set up with enough chromebooks.

We know that this timing is unfortunate and we have already sent feedback to central office that this is not the best time with MCAS happening.

Students in grades 3-12 across the district will take the MCIEA student climate survey and two teacher feedback surveys. The student data is anonymous and teachers will be able to see their own feedback data in June. These surveys are an intentional effort made by the district to increase student voice and get student feedback.

All three surveys should take students about 30 min (10 min each). As a proctor, you will read the proctor script from this Proctor Guide.

Artifacts are due April 13th. Please update the date for your goals and reread over your formative evaluation. If your evaluator has indicated that you are missing an artifact please add that artifact.

BPS Math Interim Feedback Survey (BE HONEST PLEASE)

This week’s math resource, TRU Math, is a site I was introduced to at the math facilitator training.  TRU stands for Teaching for Robust Understanding.  TRU math was created through a partnership of the Shell Center for Math Education,  UC  Berkeley, and the University of Nottingham in the UK.  Together, they identified and defined the Five Dimensions of a Powerful classroom: content; cognitive demand; equitable access to content; agency, authority,  and identify; and formative assessment.  The centerpiece of their work is a series of tasks and lessons, and a framework for using each.  I have really enjoyed engaging with the cognitive demand of the tasks during training! Though the tasks and problems are only available for grades 6-12, the presentation framework for lessons and tasks is applicable for all grades.  They also offer free online PD.  If you’re interested in forming a group to do a PD module as a group, let me (Emily Beck) know, and I’ll see what I can do to figure out scheduling and identify which module generates the most interest.

2019 Summer Learning Programs (Summer School)

BPS is offering summer learning opportunities (Non-Credit Bearing) to our 3rd – 8th grade students. District-wide student enrollment for these programs will open April 1st. If you have students that would benefit from BPS funded summer programming, please email Ms. Santos at ssantos2@bostonpublicschools.org (4-8) or Ms. Silva atcsilva4@bostonpublicschools.org (K1-3). Student names must be submitted to us by Friday, April 5th. We do have limited space, so not all students will be able to attend. However, students not selected to a BPS funded program will be placed on a waitlist. After April 5th, you will receive an email from Shirley Li (Guidance Intern) with what the next steps are in the process. This may include following up with families about applications that we will be sending home with students.

If you have families in need of summer programming, but not summer school, please refer them to the Summer Stuff 2019 newsletter.

Retention

As we prepare to close out the school year, we must begin thinking about those students who may not meet the requirements to move on to the next grade level. The district acknowledges that a student may have to repeat a grade following review by the principal, teacher, parent and support staff (Special Ed Coordinator, if applicable; Guidance Counselor). For additional information regarding the BPS Promotion Policy please refer to the 2018-2019 Guide to BPS For Students and Families (extra copies can be found in the Guidance Office). Once you review the promotion policy, and determine that a student is a strong candidate for retention, please email Ms. Silva (K1-3) at csilva2@bostonpublicschools.org or Ms. Santos (4-8) at ssantos2@bostonpublicschools.org (grades 4-8). Please note, Ms. Grassa has the final authority to make decisions on retention.

CPT Cycle March 3rd-May 3rd

Thank you to the teachers who provided feedback from the first 109 days of school regarding CPT time. We have heard that you are supportive of the structure but need more time to implement the CPT Cycles within the Curley Work Plan. We would like to propose that from 3/4/19-5/3/19 that teams will complete a CPT Cycle based on Interim 3 data (ELA for everyone but middle school math and science) as well as hold one climate meeting. Everyone will begin with CPT 1 starting the week of March 3, 2019. This will give teams between 6-8 CPT meetings (depending on days off) ato complete these items (The additional PDs can be for planning MCAS reviews in Math and ELA). Below are sample agendas for each CPT meeting. Team have the autonomy to map out these weeks so they can complete the full cycle by 5/3/19. See ILT representatives for more details.

• CPT #1 - Looking at Data/Focus students - Review most recent forms of data (ELA Interim 2, Lexia etc…) in order to understand where your students are in connection to the grade level learning standards. Choose a focus standard/area for the upcoming unit plan.
• CPT #2 - Unit Plan Overview - Preview the upcoming unit, specifically focus on where within this unit the focus standard/area you choose during CPT 1 and where it can be explicitly taught.
• CPT #3 - Plan Lesson - Collaboratively plan one lesson as a team that relates to the focus standard/area chosen during CPT 1. This lesson should be based on the data from your assessment and be a highly assessed standard.
• CPT #4 - LASW - All team members bring focus student work for the collaboratively planned lesson (CPT 3) and complete the protocol.
• CPT #5 - Reflection - Take time to reflect on this CPT cycle.

Detention

Students in Middle School should be submitted on the Google Form for Detention if they are tardy without a pass, missing from class, or in the hallway without a pass. Adults should ask to see the pass to make sure it has the accurate date and time. Any adults in the building can assign detention if they find students in the hallway without a pass. Please see Ms. Jackson if you have further questions.

Field Trip Request Procedure

All field trips requests should be submitted in the following way, check out this powerpoint for additional information on the steps.

• Fill out electronic form at least 2 weeks in advance. This link will be available in the blog daily. Field Trip Request Form
• Print your form submission. 
• Email list of students attending to nurses. 
• Get nurse and cafeteria signature at least 2 weeks in advance. They can sign anywhere at the bottom of your page. 
• Turn in to either main office. 
• Pass out permission slips and have students return. (English p.12, Other Languages)
• The SPC has allotted each grade level $500 to put towards field trips; any questions should be send to treasurer@curleyk8.com.
