Shout Out

Shout out to Coach Payne and the Curley Middle School Tennis Team! Curley Tennis came from behind for a thrilling victory over Frederick in the final head-to-head match of the 2018-19 season! After Curley dropped the first doubles match 0-6, Amber Solo and Alex Castaneda won 6-0 to force a tiebreak. Amber Solo then stepped up under pressure in the singles tiebreaker, winning 4 games to 1.
Curley finishes this year's Team Tennis season with 10 wins and 0 losses--Tenacity champions for the 4th year in a row and our first ever undefeated finish! This week, our players will be going through tryouts to make one of six spots on the team for the annual end of year Crane Cup tournament, played on May 10th at Harvard.

Shout out to the Keep it Safe, Curley Committee, Deirdre Anderson, Laura Negoshian, April Pumpret, Liz Spring, Eileen Cronin, Cristina Silva and Leah Hassler. This team has been working hard to help us implement our new arrival procedures that aligns with Superintendent's Circular SAF-12. Starting on June 1st we will pilot our new arrival procedures across the school! Thank you!

Curley Arrival Changes 6/1/19

Starting June 1st we will be changing our arrival procedures and families will no longer be allowed to walk their child to class. This is a pilot to help us prepare for the start of next year. To ensure that our implementation of this new policy goes smoothly, we will be doing the following:

• Communicating with families about the upcoming changes. This flyer will go home to families to explain the policy change. Please be proactive in reaching out to families you anticipate will struggle with this new policy.
• Families will be able to give feedback using this form when implementation begins in June.
• We will also be sending out robocalls over the next month to prepare families.
• For staff members who encounter families at the door, please use this language to frame and describe our new arrival policy.
• Finally, please review this arrival document to see revised morning duty posts. It is especially important that those staff members who are posted at doors are able to communicate our new policy to families.

Water Room Upper School 

The water/paper room on the ground floor will now remain locked for safety reasons. If you need to get water or paper, please ask the main office or an administrator.

2019 Curley Plant + Bake Sale

Join us on Saturday, May 4th from 10am-2pm as we transform the parking lot across from the school into a pop-up nursery where the JP community buys top quality annuals, herbs, and vegetables. The Plant Sale is fun and a treasured community event. In addition to the plants, there are activities for the kids, a raffle, and a fabulous bake sale.If you can help the day of or donate a bake sale item (water/drinks are appreciated too) please sign up here.

Boosterthon

The SPC is leading the Boosterthon Fundraiser for the 2nd year. The Boosterthon team needs to come in for 10-15 min to meet with each team and explain the process. Boosterthon Fun Run will take place on Wednesday, June 12th.

Flower Sale

The 6th grade and SEI students are holding another flower sale to raise money for a bus for our overnight Appalachian Mountain Club hiking trip next month. We are taking flower orders by pre-order only this time!

We are excited to open the flower sale to the entire Curley community! Monday, all homeroom teachers will find an instructions sheet, a class order form with a money envelope, and a flier to go home with students. Please encourage students to place orders. Orders must be placed and all money turned in with the envelope by this Friday, May 3. Teachers, on Friday please place the order form in Amy Lieberman's mailbox or bring it to her room, Upper School 211. Flowers will be delivered to your classroom on May 10. This is right before Mothers' Day so please remind students that this is a great gift for any mother in their life! Thank you in advance for your support.

Go Green at the Curley

We hope you all are ready to help us all Go Green at the Curley. Students were told about how we will be reviving our recycling efforts starting tomorrow!

Small classroom bins that staff indicated they needed on an earlier survey will be distributed soon. They just arrived Friday afternoon. New locations for large barrels with tops have been labeled and there will be 2-3 bins on every floor of both buildings. We are asking for your help and support in modeling correct recycling and teaching all students about correct recycling. Here is a FAQ sheet to answer some of your questions. In the Reducing to Zero Waste drive folder, you will find other resources such as the signage that will be posted and the BPS Zero Waste Guide. We plan to start small and become very successful at creating good habits around recycling so that when we start the next school year, we can come in strong! If you have any questions or would like to join our team, please let someone on the Zero Waste team know.

Weekly Math Resource

This week’s math resources are two different summer professional development opportunities recommended by BPS math department head, Linda Davenport. Unfortunately, BPS does not have funds for these workshops. However, you will get graduate credits that count towards the salary scale.  The first workshop, run by EDC for teachers in grades 5-7, focuses on making fractions more accessible. Register by April 30 (Tuesday) for the best rates. The second set of workshops are run by Investigations. There are four different options: Using K-5 Investigations, Computational Fluency, Practice Standards 1, 3, 5, and 6, and another on Practice Standards 2, 4, 7, and 8. Unlike the initial trainings provided three years ago, these summer sessions are all run by actual Investigations authors.   Discount pricing until Wednesday, May 1.

Bulletin Boards

It is that time again, please make sure to have your bulletin board updated with student work by Friday, May 3rd. All bulletin boards should have the Curley template posted with it. This is a great project for a student teacher and/or a set of responsible students. It is important that things are stapled up in all corners. Please note that you can share whole group learning (number talk, sample of writing process, response to reading etc....) The work does have to be perfect we prefer authenticity. Bulletin Boards make our hallways feel warm and welcoming and help us celebrate our students.

School Visit & Observations

I would like to introduce Dr. Claire White and Karen White from EFA. Both Karen and Claire will be visiting classrooms to conduct an instructional inventory of the practices we use here at Curley across K-8. They will be collecting data the week of April 30. Please welcome them into our community.

Retention

As we prepare to close out the school year, we must begin thinking about those students who may not meet the requirements to move on to the next grade level. The district acknowledges that a student may have to repeat a grade following review by the principal, teacher, parent and support staff (Special Ed Coordinator, if applicable; Guidance Counselor). For additional information regarding the BPS Promotion Policy please refer to the 2018-2019 Guide to BPS For Students and Families (extra copies can be found in the Guidance Office). Once you review the promotion policy, and determine that a student is a strong candidate for retention, please email Ms. Silva (K1-3) at csilva2@bostonpublicschools.org or Ms. Santos (4-8) at ssantos2@bostonpublicschools.org (grades 4-8). Please note, Ms. Grassa has the final authority to make decisions on retention.

CPT Cycle March 3rd-May 3rd

Thank you to the teachers who provided feedback from the first 109 days of school regarding CPT time. We have heard that you are supportive of the structure but need more time to implement the CPT Cycles within the Curley Work Plan. We would like to propose that from 3/4/19-5/3/19 that teams will complete a CPT Cycle based on Interim 3 data (ELA for everyone but middle school math and science) as well as hold one climate meeting. Everyone will begin with CPT 1 starting the week of March 3, 2019. This will give teams between 6-8 CPT meetings (depending on days off) ato complete these items (The additional PDs can be for planning MCAS reviews in Math and ELA). Below are sample agendas for each CPT meeting. Team have the autonomy to map out these weeks so they can complete the full cycle by 5/3/19. See ILT representatives for more details.

• CPT #1 - Looking at Data/Focus students - Review most recent forms of data (ELA Interim 2, Lexia etc…) in order to understand where your students are in connection to the grade level learning standards. Choose a focus standard/area for the upcoming unit plan.
• CPT #2 - Unit Plan Overview - Preview the upcoming unit, specifically focus on where within this unit the focus standard/area you choose during CPT 1 and where it can be explicitly taught.
• CPT #3 - Plan Lesson - Collaboratively plan one lesson as a team that relates to the focus standard/area chosen during CPT 1. This lesson should be based on the data from your assessment and be a highly assessed standard.
• CPT #4 - LASW - All team members bring focus student work for the collaboratively planned lesson (CPT 3) and complete the protocol.
• CPT #5 - Reflection - Take time to reflect on this CPT cycle.

Detention

Students in Middle School should be submitted on the Google Form for Detention if they are tardy without a pass, missing from class, or in the hallway without a pass. Adults should ask to see the pass to make sure it has the accurate date and time. Any adults in the building can assign detention if they find students in the hallway without a pass. Please see Ms. Jackson if you have further questions.

Field Trip Request Procedure

All field trips requests should be submitted in the following way, check out this powerpoint for additional information on the steps.

• Fill out electronic form at least 2 weeks in advance. This link will be available in the blog daily. Field Trip Request Form
• Print your form submission. 
• Email list of students attending to nurses. 
• Get nurse and cafeteria signature at least 2 weeks in advance. They can sign anywhere at the bottom of your page. 
• Turn in to either main office. 
• Pass out permission slips and have students return. (English p.12, Other Languages)
• The SPC has allotted each grade level $500 to put towards field trips; any questions should be send to treasurer@curleyk8.com.
