Shout Out

Shout out to the Curley After School Program team for a wonderful, amazing end of the year CASP BASH. Thank you to Jessica Montoya, Sharon Pina-Pitts, Adalberto Guerrero, Arleta Faulkner, Maria Navarro, Blanca Pereira, Lourdes Vasquez, Maria Kamberidis, Geju Brown, Mark Righini, Andria Butler,  Clelia Camacho and Erika Mercado for all their hard work. I Care, We Care, CASP Cares!!

Top Ten of SY 2016-2017

It has been a great school year, so much to celebrate and think back upon in a positive light. Below is a Top Ten from this school year! Thank you for helping to make the Curley K-8 a special place to grow, learn and feel cared for!

10. Starting the year with 2 full time music teachers!!!!! Then being able to see their work develop over the course of the school year with the Curley Band and Curley Chorus!

9. Tenacity students winning the Curley’s first Crane Cup! It has been amazing to see our students grow and develop their tennis skills over the last 4 years and it culminated with us winning the tournament against all the other middle schools!

8. The opening of our “Joe for you Bro” coffee shop in the Upper School. It has been great to see our students developing their transitional skills and taking on this new entrepreneurship.

7. Red Jacket Weekend hosted by City Year helped to spruce up our building! There is nothing like the feeling of seeing the freshly painted hallways after a weekend of service.

6. Watching our middle school student participate in the Run to Remember. It is unbelievable to think that in 9 months they have been able to train for a 10k or half marathon. Even better is watching staff and families take on this challenge with them. We are thrilled are students are learning about self-care, fitness and personal goal setting.

5. Hosting the YWCA Race Dialogues the week of the presidential election. We had an unprecedented turnout of staff and families who wanted to make the conversation about race a priority.

4. The addition of Playworks to our daily work at recess and throughout the day. Coach C brought the energy, tools and skills necessary to help our students be feel more supportive during unstructured playtime.

3. Completing year 1 of Excellence For All (EFA). We may have over enrolled classrooms but it just shows the belief families had in the work we do as a community to best support our learners. The year culminated with a Capstone project that was created by teachers across grade levels and our student work shined for all to see!

2. The Lion King performances were outstanding. Watching our students sing, dance and act on stage was amazing. There was so much community and family support for this and together we all created a masterpiece!

And the number one highlight of SY 2016-2017 was our Curley Cares March. There is nothing more beautiful than seeing our students show the world what they truly CARE about. We marched around the school and empowered our students to have a voice in the world and hopefully make it a more caring place for us all to live in.

TEACHERS - Updates for Report Card Comment Codes

In case you had problems uploading your comments to your report cards. The district has addressed the problem with the comment code lookup (Ctrl+L). In addition there is now a link to the BPS Comment Codes right on the Scores screen! Please let Mr. Diaz know ASAP if you are having problems posting your grades.

Early Release Schedule for Students

Just a reminder we will dismiss at 12:30pm on Tuesday, June 27th and Wednesday, June 28th. Please remind families that there will be no after school programming on those days and that the field is off limits due to window construction. Click here for the schedule.

Windows

Starting tomorrow, Wednesday, May 31st you may start to see work beginning on the window project. 2-4 trailers will be delivered and we have requested they be stored in the following spaces to conserve parking spots (originally they wanted to take the whole Lower School Lot):

• 1-2 on the black top by the kickball diamond
• 1 in the grass next to the driveway entrance by the kindergarten Play structures
• 1 on the grass in front of the Lower School parking lot. 

There also may be some signs posted in the Lower School Parking Lot on random days stating not to park in a specific spot. This is due to needed space to take down the grates on the windows. This week and next week new windows should be installed in the electrical room, boiler room and the 2nd grade storage space. More details will follow as we get an update. Attached you will find a document to help you think about packing up your space for the summer.

Save Items

PHOTOS - Please leave your ROOM SIGNS in place if you are staying in the same room. If you will be in a different room next year, just take the photo with you and leave the sleeve. If you are leaving us, please feel free to take your sign with you! :) There are several photos of classes preparing for the CURLEY CARES MARCH on the bulletin board across from the Teachers’ Room — if they are of your students, please feel free to take them down and give them to the students pictured. Also please save any Curley Signs that are already in rooms and hallways.

Supply Lists

Some teams have been asking about supply lists, so here are some reminders. Directions for supply lists are in the check out document (#11)! (See later in the blog, or click here) Teams can choose to pool their money, or spend individually. Each team has access to a tab on the spreadsheet linked in the document where you can input your supply lists. Reach out to Laurie Ciardi or Lindsey Morgan if you have further questions. Thanks! PS Don't forget to include your new teammates for next year!

Summer Reading 2017 - Update

Student summer reading packets will be distributed this week. As last year, all students will be asked to take a pledge to read daily over the summer months and to maintain a log of this reading. In addition, students entering grades 4 through 8 will be expected to read one additional book, in coordination with the BPS and Boston Public Library initiative, “Summer Reading Together”. We are asking that no additional reading assignments be given, so that students and their families can enjoy the summer break, without multiple, sometimes duplicative, summer reading assignments. Please contact Eileen Cronin if you have questions regarding summer reading expectations.

Closing Document

Please click the below link for access to our closing document. ALL staff should read this and be sure to complete any steps that apply to their role. All teachers will need a printed copy so they can submit signatures by 6/28/17.

Grade Level/Content Team Reflections

We are asking all teams to reflect on their year collaborating together. This is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate successes but also to be honest about how we can improve to support the growth and learning of the team. If you are facilitating the meeting think about how your team will complete this activity (i.e. charting out on sticky notes, completing a Google Form, open discussion, etc...). All teams are expected to complete this activity and and email the following document to David Diaz by Wednesday, June 28th (you will need to make a copy of the document before you complete it). Teams may choose when they complete this at CPT or time on 6/27 -6/28 12:30-2:45pm). We are asking that this is not a rushed activity but an honest discussion and reflection. This document will be returned to teams in September to help them plan and start the year off strong.

From our Nurse to Staff & Families

As we wrap up another successful school year we here in the Nurse's Office would like to send out a few reminders:

• If you child has a medication in the nurse's office please see attached document about proper pick up of the medication. 
• If your child has had a recent physical, please send a copy into school with your child so we may update his/her records. You may also fax this information to 617-635-8244. The information may also be emailed to apumphret@bostonpublicschools.org or mregan@bostonpublicschools.org 
• Please keep in mind that if your child will require medication in school for the school year 2017/2018 we will need updated medication orders. Students requiring asthma medication in school must have an updated Asthma Action Plan. Students with Life Threatening Allergies must have an updated Allergy Action Plan. This is especially important for children with food allergies as we will need to communicate this information with BPS Nutrition. Medication used by children in school must be accompanied by a doctor's order or plan and the medication must in it's original packaging with proper labeling and unexpired. All students receiving medications in school should also have an up to date physical on file in school. Term 4 Grading Window for Grades 6-11

The term 4 Grading window for grades 6-11 students is currently open from June 8th and closes on June 28th.

Reminder: After entering or editing term grades in the scores tab, teachers must click Post Grades to write the grades to the report cards. Grades will be saved as you enter them but they will not appear on the report cards until you click Post Grades.
Also remember to enter Final grades in addition to Term 4 marks.

Spring Term Report Card Grading Window for Grades K2 - 5

The spring grading window for students in grades 1-5 is will open from June 6th to June 23rd. Please refer to the materials below for instructions on entering grades.

Dear Curley Staff,
I wanted to thank everyone at the Curley for partnering with Boston Children’s Hospital Neighborhood Partnerships Training and Access Project (BCHNP-TAP) . This program is designed as a two year partnership and this year marks the end of our two years.
As a part of measuring both our progress with the Curley as well as your school’s future needs, we are requesting that all school staff complete a survey that includes a number of items specific to the social, emotional, and behavioral health needs of students at your school. The survey results will only be shared with the school in the aggregate and individual responses will not be shared. The survey will take 7-10 minutes to complete.

It has been a privilege to work with this school and it has been a wonderful experience to see your ongoing commitment and dedication to your students and families. I have really enjoyed the opportunity to work with the Curley and such an incredible staff.

PD SY 2017-2018

Both paras and teachers voted to convert afternoon hours of PD into summer hours.

• Teachers will report for PD on Wednesday, August 30th and Thursday August 31st for PD from 8am-3pm. 
• Paras will report on Wednesday, August 30th from 8:00am-2:00pm.
• Teachers and paras will report on Tuesday, September 5th from 8:30am-2:30pm for PD
• Teacher will stay after school for PD from 3:45pm-5:45pm on the following Thursdays: October 19th, November 30th,  February 1st,  March 22nd, and May 31st
