Shout Out

Shout out to Cathy Auguste (Tenacity) for being an amazing team player, and for going beyond the call of duty to support our students, families, and Curley Staff. Thank you for being an amazing member of our community!

Shout out to Kristin Clark for staying beyond late to support a student in getting home safely on Friday afternoon. Your presence was a comfort to him and you modeled how to care about others!

Clarifying CPT

We have heard from teams regarding the constraints of CPT. We have taken that feedback and given more time back to teams with expanded topics that you were seeking time for. Please check out this document to further understand how the weeks will be broken down moving forward. Also you can also check out the CPT At A Glance Document as a friendly reminder. Teacher Facilitators will still support and lead teams during this time. For example, this coming week, the week of Oct. 23, the Climate Teacher Facilitator will be leading the team through the climate topic. Next week, Oct. 30 will start with Week A.

ILT

Student Success Team (SST)

SST is a multidisciplinary team that supports and empowers teachers to develop a system of interventions that encourages student success through shared collaboration, resources and expertise within our building. All forms can be accessed in the Student Success Team Folder within the Google Drive. Please use these tools and review them as a way to help you further understand the SST process. Grade Level SST liaison's will be reaching out this week to schedule their first visit.

CASP Entrance

Curley Community, Please be advised that the CASP entrance is only for students enrolled in the Before School Program. When you ring the door bell at CASP you are taking a staff member away from supervising students. If you do not have your badge please use the main entrance in the lower and upper school. Thank you.

Fundraiser (10/31/17 to support hurricane victims)

We all know that the 2017 hurricane season has taken a devastating toll on over a dozen nations in the Caribbean, Central America and North America. Three of our middle school classes will be raising money and collecting donated items for people in need. Our Curley Cares goal is to collect essential items and raise $5,000 to send to several charities. We are hoping that every community member will consider contributing $5 and/or essential items. To celebrate our efforts, we are facilitating our Pajama Day on October 31st. We would love to see our entire Curley Community wearing pajamas and our specialized bracelets on this day. Our middle school students will enjoy a Movie Screening Celebration as well. All monetary donations are appreciated! Essential items we will collect include:

• -Small AM/FM radios that use AAA or AA batteries that are easy to find
• -D and C batteries
• -AA and AAA batteries
• -Insect Repellent
• -tooth paste
• - tooth brushes
• - Deodorants
• - First aid kits
• - Triple antibiotics
• - Mash potatoes in powder form
• - Shaving items
• - Towels
• - Hand sanitizers
• - Feminine hygiene
• - Coloring books and crayons
• - Soap
• - Underwear for all ages

Guidance Updates

• Lunch Monitor Training:Training for the Lunch monitors will begin on Monday, October 23rd and will be given within (4-6) 30 minutes sessions. The training will include a Bullying Prevention and Intervention PD and a Verbal De-escalation workshop. Lunch monitors will receive certificate of completion. Lunch room observation and debrief will be part of the training. 
• 8th Grade Parent Night: The Guidance Office is hosting a High School Information Night for 8th grade students and their families on Thursday, October 26th, from 5-7pm. During this event, we will share information about the upcoming high school application process including common application requirements and the types of BPS high schools. We will also discuss ways in which parents/guardians can support their student during this process. We would appreciate your support in promoting this event by encouraging students to attend this event with their families. 
• 6th Grade Unity Day (Remix Day): We are excited to inform you about our Sixth Grade Unity Day. This social-emotional learning day will be hosted on Tuesday, October 31st for the sixth grade students. The purpose of this day is to educate our sixth grade students on various topics including substance use, mental health, and bullying prevention. We are hopeful that this event will aid in building healthy and collaborative relationships in the sixth grade community. Please note, we will use the auditorium for most of the day (8:30-10:30 & 1:00-3:00pm) and the Playing Field from 1:00 - 2:00pm.

STAR Reading Progress Monitoring (Grade 3-8 Only)

The first reading progress monitoring event of this school year is scheduled for next week (10/23- – 10/27) for students reading below grade level, including students ranked “On Watch”, “Intervention” and “Urgent Intervention” for the fall STAR Reading benchmark assessment.
Progress monitoring is completed independently by students, and can be scheduled during WIN block or other convenient time. To begin the assessment, students log into “STAR Reading” as usual, and begin testing. Progress monitoring should take no longer than 15-20 minutes per student.

Picture Day

Please take a minute to review the Picture Day Schedule to determine the time that your class is scheduled for photos. Please make every effort to be on time, as our schedule is tight. Classes in grades K through 5 should come to the side door of the Lower School near the play structure. If possible, please have the students lined up in order of height. This will make things easier and faster for our photographers. If you have any questions or concerns about the schedule, please reach out to David Diaz or Laurie Ciardi. This week you should have received picture forms in English from the main office. Individual and class photos will be taken during the week of October 24. Please see the schedule below and set the date in your calendar. We are taking pictures for over 900 students this year. In order to have a smooth and fun picture day, it is important that you keep in mind the following information:
Picture Day for grades K-8 will be as follows:

• 10/24 : K-2 & Siblings
• 10/25: 3-5 & Make-Ups
• 10/26: 6-8 & Make-Ups
• Picture forms in Spanish are available in both Main Offices upon request. Please see Ms. Vazquez or Ms. Powers.
• Parents will need to fill out separate forms for Sibling Pictures. These are also available at both Main Offices.
• Pictures need to be paid for in full and all forms need to be filled out before Picture Day. Please hold on to both forms and money and give them to the photographer on that day.
• Please be on time for your assigned time slot. Our schedule will be tight!
• Pictures for grades K-5 as well as sibling pictures will be taken in front of the Lower School on Pershing Rd.
• Pictures for grades 6-8 will be taken in front of the Upper School on Centre St. 
• In case of rain, all pictures will be taken in the Upper School Auditorium
• A schedule of times for each homeroom will be coming out next Tuesday, October 10.

INTERNATIONAL WEEK UPDATE

As you think and talk with your colleagues this week about countries you’d like to introduce to your students, you may find the 4-minute slideshow from last year a bit of inspiration! Halloween

The Curley K-8 will not have a Halloween celebration during the school day. As a community we are focused on health and wellness and therefore we ask that all candy remain at home. We are also asking that students leave all costumes, masks, face painting and clown paraphernalia at home as well. Thank you in advance for your support around this matter. Attached is our Celebrations Policy.

Library Committee

Please share with friends and family the news that the Curley K-8 Library is receiving Shelf Help from the Boston Book Festival! The organizers of the Festival are promoting and publicizing this wishlist, to help us re-open the library with new, hardcover children’s books. The Boston Book Festival is October 28 in Copley Square, and is a fantastic, free, family-friendly celebration of literature for readers of all ages. Our first Library Committee Meeting will be Saturday, October 21 at 9 am, in the Community Room of the JP Branch Library on South Street (next to Curtis Hall.) Please join us to talk about next steps for fundraising, publicity, work in the library, and more. Thank you to everyone who has helped the library, we look forward to a grand opening later in the fall!
