Plate Waste Study

Northbound Ventures is conducting a plate waste study that will measure the quantity and type of food students throw away during lunch. The goal of the study is to reduce food waste and increase student participation with school meals. Curley is one of the schools selected for the study. The study covers grades 3-8 and requires parents/guardian’s consent. Cristina Silva will be stopping at 3-8 grade classrooms tomorrow and Friday to handle consent forms to students. Safe Mode Drill This Week

We wanted to remind everyone of our Safe Mode Procedures because we will have a drill this week. This drill has been planned for some time but with the recent violence this past weekend we wanted to give you all a heads up. We will get on the intercom and ask everyone to go into Safe Mode. We will further describe that the building will function normally except that no one can enter or exit the building. We will also do the remind app text to notify everyone of this once the drill starts and when it concludes. Please let the admin team know if you have any questions.

6.28 CONTAINMENT PROTOCOL
Containment is a protective action used to safeguard faculty, staff and students when there is Boston Police activity near the school or a potentially dangerous situation near or in the school.
Safe Mode -Exterior Issue
  • This is for exterior issues. Safe Mode is a protective action used to safeguard faculty, staff, and students from an external threat as a result of law enforcement activity near the school or a potentially dangerous situation near the school.
  • During the initiation of SAFE MODE, the principal or designee will announce the following message via intercom and/or using school administrators and safety officer.
  • “Attention faculty and students: We are now in SAFE MODE. Remain in your classroom. If you are in the hallway, stairs, or bathroom, move to the nearest classroom. Do not leave until told to do so, even if an alarm sounds.”
Upon notification of SAFE MODE faculty and staff should do the following:
1. If you see, hear, or observe the threat outside of your building bring all students and staff into the building immediately.
2. Check the hallways for people nearby and bring them into the classroom.
3. Check adjacent classrooms through interior doors for unsupervised students.
4. Shut off classroom lights
5. Secure and barricade the classroom door, cover door windows using available resources (e.g large paper), close windows, pull down shades (if you have them).
6. Move students away from windows and doors and stay in your current location.
7. Take attendance. Verify the missing and extra people in your room. Write the names on a piece of paper and wait for your safety point person to contact you or text the list to your safety point person.
8. Stay with your students in the classroom until further instructions are given.
9. Only use the intercom to notify the main office of emergencies or special needs.
10. SAFE MODE ends only when an administrator or designee announces it via intercom or through door to door notifications.

No adults can leave or enter the building while we are in Safe Mode.

Safe Word
  • We will have a safe word if we need to enter a classroom during Safe Mode. The teacher should ask the person trying to enter what the safe word is and our response will be #curleycares
  • SAFE MODE ends only when announced by an administrator.
Reverse Evacuation (moving from outside to inside)

In the event that students are outside when we need to go into Safe Mode, an administrator will notify the staff via the radio that they need bring the students into the building. If there is no radio response or no radio, an administrator will go outside to notify them in person. The lunch monitors will blow the whistle to alert the students that recess is over and students will be escorted inside through the closest door.

Internal Threat
This is for an interior issue. Internal threat will be announced if there is any person in the building who is looking to cause harm to people.
  • When there is an Internal Threat, the principal or designee will announce the following message via intercom and/or using school administrators and safety officer. Please note that the principal or designee will also provide information on the location of the internal threat.
  • “Attention faculty and students there is an INTERNAL THREAT.”
  • All staff should review the following video from Ohio State University: https://dps.osu.edu/active-shooter (Do not show this video to students)
1. No one will be in the hallways.
2. Anyone with information on the threat should be calling 911 to alert police of the situation
3. Occupants will be using the RUN, HIDE, FIGHT protocol to decide their actions.
◦ RUN if you know it is safe to do so: get as far away from the building as you can (you should not be able to see the building from where you have run to).
◦ HIDE if you cannot run: barricade where you are (if you can) and stay out of site of the threat.
◦ FIGHT if it is your last resort and the threat is in the space and is going to hurt you or people you are with.

Helpful Hints: “Know Your Space”
• Know all available exit points if you ever need to RUN
• Know what you can use to barricade your door and conceal yourself from sight if you ever need to HIDE (chairs, tables, chart paper, etc.)
• Know what you can use to FIGHT if it is your only option (fire extinguisher, chair, laptop, etc.)

The Principal will announce the following over the intercom: “Attention faculty and students: we are now in containment. Remain in your classroom. If you are in the hallway, stairs, or lavatory, move into the nearest classroom. Do not leave the room until told to do so, even if an alarm sounds.”

You should do the following upon notification of containment:
• Check the hallways for people nearby and bring them into the classroom. Check adjacent classrooms through interior doors for unsupervised students.
• Lock or secure the classroom doors and close the windows.
• Move students away from the windows and doors. Shut off your lights and stay in your current location.
• Take attendance. Verify the missing, the injured, and the extra people in your room. Write the names on the yellow paper & wait for someone to contact you for that list (may be by intercom or in person). In the event you do not have yellow paper, use other paper and preferably a red pen.
• Stay with your students in the classroom until further instructions.
• Only use the intercom to notify the office of emergencies or special needs.
• Containment ends only when the Principal or designee announces it via intercom or door to door.
• Restrict student cell phone usage.

The administration will do the following:
• Lock all exterior doors
• Designate staff members who will check and lock bathrooms
• Make notifications via the PA system, Superintendent and Police
• Notify families during containment via a ConnectEd message
• Do a room-by-room sweep of the entire school. They will engage any person not in a classroom
• Send a Robo Call notice to all families within a short time after the containment is complete

Family ESL Classes

We are looking to offer ESL classes to Curley families one evening a week for 10 weeks. This will be funded through the Office of English Language Learners. The teacher will be paid the BTU teacher hourly rate for this work for 4 hours per week. Please email Katie if you are interested in this opportunity!

Copy Machine Etiquette

Please do not send any wireless copies from your classroom to the copier machine. You may print wireless if you are in the teacher's lounge. This will prevent work documents from being mixed up and copier from being emptied so quick. This had become particularly challenging for those who are personally at the copy machine and a job is sent to the copier remotely which interrupts the person at the machine. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

Attendance Update

Homeroom teachers are responsible for marking student absences excused or unexcused. The office will no longer be handling this process. Also, It is important that homeroom teachers are logging calls related to student attendance. We can not move forward in the attendance process if there are no calls logged. If you have attendance questions about a specific student and/or parent letter please email Lauren Jones-Forbes at curleysuccess@gmail.com.

Beginning Monday, October 29th a member of the Attendance Team will be sending an email around 12pm to all teachers who have a student marked absent that day. This is to ensure that our records are accurate as sometimes a student misses homeroom and is marked absent when they are physically present in school.

BIMAS

The Behavior Intervention Monitoring Assessment System (BIMAS) is a measure of social, emotional and behavioral functioning in children and adolescents ages 5 to 18 years. It includes 34 change-sensitive items that are used for universal screening of behavioral health and for assessing response to intervention. There will be optional times in CPT for you to complete the data entry. The due date is November 21st. Marquel Norton (mnorton5@bostonpublicschools.org) and your Climate Team Rep will be available to answer any and all your questions about BIMAS. Attached are FAQs and the Powerpoint presentation.
