9/13/18 Daily Bulletin

Shout Out

Shout out to Joanne Mylett for always putting others before herself and helping out her colleagues when they are in need!

Shout out to Kathy Powers for always being so understanding and positive.

Transition Times

We are asking all staff to be conscientious of time when dropping off, picking up from lunch, recess and specialties. We want to respect the learning time in each content area so please do not drop off/pick up early/late.

Student Phone Numbers

The admin team is asking for teachers help with adding a working phone number to each students bus tag or having them write it in the folder/notebook/agenda they bring home. With the buses still running behind we have had to call to notify families and look up each students phone number individually, this causes long delays in relaying information to families. Many students across all grades do not have a working number memorized. If this was written on their tag it would help us call families more quickly.

MCAS Student Roster Update

We did not receive student roster pdfs yet from the state, but Ms. Morgan is working on separating the data for teams. Spreadsheets will be uploaded on the Drive. ELA rosters are currently uploaded and Math will be soon! To find got to the drive: SY 2018-2019 > Data/Assessment > Grade

Tenacity

Tenacity is currently seeking to recruit 6th grade students into our free after-school program (Monday through Thursday from 3:15 until 6pm). Our program combines academic support with a daily tennis and fitness program, along with life skills, field trips, and a unique social community. Please send students our way that you feel would be a great addition to Tenacity! For more information, including registration, please feel free to visit our Tenacity space on the Upper School Ground level near the double doors leading to the Lower School building and speak to either Cathy AuGuste or Payne Schanski. Our emails are CathyAuguste@Tenacity.org and PayneSchanski@Tenacity.org

TEACHERS ROOM RESOURCES - From Amika

We once again have a working GBC binding machine (with binding strips) available for your use, as well as a letter-maker machine. There is also a new color printer! Feel free to create teaching materials and mini-posters with it, but please do not use it for making class sets of copies.

In addition, there are two boxes of teaching resources you may find of use — one with stationery and art supplies, the other with books and magazines focused on African American history. All are new or in excellent condition. Help yourself — first come, first served. As you know, we have limited room in the teachers’ room… any “give-away” materials that are not taken by the end of the week will be put outside the door to be recycled (i.e. thrown away).

Summer Reader Leaders Wanted!

This year we'd like to recognize our Summer Reader Leaders as part of the Curley Library grand opening celebration. To do so, we must have the names of students who have completed their summer reading by this Friday, September 14th. Students who pass in their summer reading assignments after that date will still be recognized, but will not be able to participate in the Library's opening day festivities.
Please send names to Caitlyn Gable (K-2) and Eileen Cronin (Gr. 3-8) as soon as possible.

From the Climate (CBHM) Team:

We hope you are off to a good start building relationships with your students and putting routines in place in your classroom.
Please use this Curley Cares Checklist as a resource. Our goal is to create a consistent Curley experience where all classrooms have these common routines in place. Here is a recap of the work we did during August PD on Building Relationships Through Culturally Responsive Teaching. We look forward to continuing our work together to become a school of Warm Demanders who build trust and learning partnerships with all students.
We are still in need of a climate representative from the Grade 4 and Grade 6 teams. All are welcome at our 1st meeting of the year on September 19th from 3:45-5.

Dismissal Timing

Just a reminder about our dismissal timing for this year.
  • 3:00pm - Afternoon announcements, all students headed to CASP, Tenacity or any after school activities.
  • 3:02pm - Walkers are called for dismissal. Walkers are not allowed back in the building once they leave, so there should be one-way traffic towards the front door. Bus students who have family approval can leave as walkers. Teachers and partners on dismissal duty will have a list of bus students and walkers to verify. Hallways must be clear before buses are called.
  • 3:04pm – A call is made for student to move to their bus rooms K-5.
  • 3:06pm – Bus numbers are called and a staff member escorts students to the bus. The staff member should walk outside with the students and load them on the bus. The staff member should remain with the students until they are seated on the bus.
  • 3:25pm - Remaining bus students report to the respective main office to wait for buses.

Morning Announcements

We will start morning announcements on Monday, September 17th and this will happen each at at 8:35am.

Curriculum Resource (EL, EC, Sci, SAS, etc...)

  • The simplified EL Guides can be found here.
  • Early Childhood Resources: new Early Childhood site, under "Unit 1" there are updated, standards-aligned, shared reading, read aloud and SFL informed writing lessons. Currently only Unit 1 is up there- we'll be rolling it out unit by unit this year.
  • A note from Brooke about the EC units: New teachers to FK2 will use the updated curriculum, while the roll out for teachers already using the curriculum will be slower. We have a team of about 12 experienced FK2 teachers from the district who are meeting in a PLC to try out the revised lessons, share experiences and provide feedback. That being said, the updates are public on the website and anyone can access them. We will have the additional read alouds and writing mentor text available for folks to pick up and sign out at the K conference, but folks can reach out if they don't get them there and want them. If you have K2 teams in your networks who use Focus and need/want support aligning their instruction to the standards, using the new curriculum guides in Focus is an important first step.
  • Science curriculum/Message to teachers - We apologize for the delay with new science materials. Holly Rosa will give us a better sense of when materials will be in teachers’ hands this week.
  • Here are the quick links to our ELA SAS and Math SAS (Investigations) to plan for the year.

Field Trip Request Procedure

All field trips requests should be submitted in the following way, check out this powerpoint for additional information on the steps.

  • Turn in to either main office.
  • Pass out permission slips and have students return. (English p.12Other Languages)
  • The SPC has allotted each grade level $500 to put towards field trips; any questions should be send to treasurer@curleyk8.com.

Laminator

The laminator roll is back up. (Thanks Leah for the help!) Again, pay close attention to feeding in products straight, ensuring they don't get to spinning on the heating rolls and jamming, and watching that they're feeding out the back gray rolls that exit product out the back of the laminator. Contact me or an experienced laminator user (Kate Davis, Leah Travers, Lindsey Wright, Deb Bryson, Lindsey Morgan...) One must use the SLOWEST Run speed, use two hands to carefully line up the product you wish to laminate and keep your fingers on the product to ensure a true exit course. Thanks, Charles Tewksbury

Duties/Bus Room

Here is the quick link to the duty list. This includes bus rooms.

"Lunch/Recess" Duty on the Master Schedule

Make sure that you have checked the Master Schedule Lunch/Recess tab. Teachers have a 40-minute lunch break, then they will go relieve lunch monitors for the times in the chart (shown below). It may just be 5 minutes of transitioning your students or it may be monitoring recess (6-8 grade).
