5/16/19 Daily Bulletin

Shout Out

Shout out to Meron Tefera and Laura Strait for supporting a colleague by hosting students in their classrooms and encouraging them to get back on track.

Shout out to Adrian Ward-Jackson for modeling what a true warm demander looks like and acts like. You manage to care, be real, and hold kids accountable in a way that is so admirable. I am grateful to work beside you, and these older students are beyond fortunate to have you.

Congrats to K2 and 3rd grade for again winning the BIMAS Spring competition! Two undefeated grade levels! We’re at 52.5 percent completion and one more week to go!

Shout out to Mr. Hill! He has built such strong relationships with students. When 5th grade students were made to have a "silent lunch" due to disruptive behavior they did it. You could hear a pin drop in the cafeteria. And students still came up after to check in. It was great to see a warm demander in action!

Shout out to Nicolette Forsey-Smerek for navigating a challenging situation with a student and their family. The family feels cared for thanks to your calm and clear communication and problem solving.

Shout out to Drew Belsinger for going above and beyond for a student and showing how much you care about their success!

Shout out to Laura Shea and her K2 class for their project, A Place For Animals. It is going to the Children's Museum and will be on exhibit there at some point during the coming year.

Math MCAS Grades 3/7/8

We have updated the Testing Schedule for the 2018-2019 Math MCAS MCAS Calendar & Daily Schedule. Please review the daily schedule for the testing days, lunches, and Specials. Click on the sheets at the bottom of the page. Let Mr. Diaz know by Monday 5/6 if there is an issue.

You also need to check your Testing Session (most Homeroom teachers will have TTS session as well) and make sure that your password is working so you can access the Pearson Access Next website. Jessica Burke and Renee Ward have updated the list of small groups, proctors, and testing locations Math MCAS 2019 Grades 3,7, and 8th

In addition, please review the slides about Monitoring Test Sessions and as well as the your Test Administrator Manual and take time to go over the 2019 MCAS Roles and Responsibilities document. I am also attaching a copy of the 2019 MCAS Check List to help you stay organized before, during, and after testing.

We have enough headphones for all students but students are allowed to bring their own. The Admin team will be stationed again in Ms. Grassa's office and we will have tickets ready at 7:45 am. We are testing more students this time and as a result, the 1st day we might need more time to check everybody in. Please contact a member of the the Admin Team if you have any questions.

Art Show

The Curley Art Showcase is a day to celebrate the visual art creations of all the students at The Curley. Please join us May 23rd from 5-7pm to view works and honor our creative students. Art work by every student will be on display in the lower level of the upper school. This evening will include a dance performance and music. Food, refreshments and an arts themed raffle will also be part of the evening festivities. More information about the event will be sent home with each student very soon. K2, 1st and 2nd grade teachers

The end of year window for BAS is open from May 20 - June 14. Be sure to find the highest instructional level and a hard level for each child. All data must be uploaded to the BAS Spreadsheet by June 17th. Caitlyn will communicate coverage ASAP.

LGBTQ+ Picnic

Come join us for our annual LGBTQ+ Picnic on Thursday, May 30th at 6PM! All families are welcome to come and bring their own picnic and share in our celebration! The picnic will take place on the Curley field; in case of rain we will be in the upper school cafeteria.

EL Summer Program Forms 2019

Summer school registration for ELL's begins next week. Attached are the applications for ELL'S in every language. If you want students to attend please give them the registration form and have them return it Waverly no later than May 24, 2019. Seats on a first come first serve basis so the quicker students return the forms the quicker we can enroll them. This programming is for all ELL'S 1-5 enter grades 3-12.     STAR ELA Spring Benchmark May 28th -31st (Grades 3-8 Only)

    Spring ELA benchmark testing for Grades 3-8 will take place from Tuesday, May 28th through end of day Friday, May 31st. Testing should be scheduled during WIN block or other convenient time. All students, regardless of performance level, must take the spring STAR Reading benchmark assessment.

    Students can access STAR Reading through Clever under the blue "R" tile. Testing should take no longer than 20 minutes and is group administered. The data we collect provides valuable insights into a child's growth as a reader. Please remind your students of the importance of this testing and be sure to provide a quiet, distraction-free testing environment, so all students can do their best. To assure consistency, all benchmark testing must occur during the prescribed testing window.

    ANNOUNCING International Week Dates for SY 2019-20!

    Based on data from the 2018 International Committee Feedback survey, International Week for the upcoming school year has been scheduled for the week of December 2-6, 2019. The expectation is that all 56 homerooms will participate in this cultural exchange, sharing what they learn with their buddy classes. As you make plans for next year, we encourage you to start thinking about a country to study and how it might connect to your curriculum

    Curley Arrival Changes 6/1/19

    Starting June 1st we will be changing our arrival procedures and families will no longer be allowed to walk their child to class. This is a pilot to help us prepare for the start of next year. To ensure that our implementation of this new policy goes smoothly, we will be doing the following:
    • Communicating with families about the upcoming changes. This flyer will go home to families to explain the policy change. Please be proactive in reaching out to families you anticipate will struggle with this new policy.
    • Families will be able to give feedback using this form when implementation begins in June.
    • We will also be sending out robocalls over the next month to prepare families.
    • For staff members who encounter families at the door, please use this language to frame and describe our new arrival policy.
    • Finally, please review this arrival document to see revised morning duty posts. It is especially important that those staff members who are posted at doors are able to communicate our new policy to families. 

    Boosterthon

    The SPC is leading the Boosterthon Fundraiser for the 2nd year. The Boosterthon team needs to come in for 10-15 min to meet with each team and explain the process. Boosterthon Fun Run will take place on Wednesday, June 12th.

    School Visit & Observations

    I would like to introduce Dr. Claire White and Karen White from EFA. Both Karen and Claire will be visiting classrooms to conduct an instructional inventory of the practices we use here at Curley across K-8. They will be collecting data the week of April 30-May 25. Please welcome them into our community.

    Retention

    As we prepare to close out the school year, we must begin thinking about those students who may not meet the requirements to move on to the next grade level. The district acknowledges that a student may have to repeat a grade following review by the principal, teacher, parent and support staff (Special Ed Coordinator, if applicable; Guidance Counselor). For additional information regarding the BPS Promotion Policy please refer to the 2018-2019 Guide to BPS For Students and Families (extra copies can be found in the Guidance Office). Once you review the promotion policy, and determine that a student is a strong candidate for retention, please email Ms. Silva (K1-3) at csilva2@bostonpublicschools.org or Ms. Santos (4-8) at ssantos2@bostonpublicschools.org (grades 4-8). Please note, Ms. Grassa has the final authority to make decisions on retention.

    Detention

    Students in Middle School should be submitted on the Google Form for Detention if they are tardy without a pass, missing from class, or in the hallway without a pass. Adults should ask to see the pass to make sure it has the accurate date and time. Any adults in the building can assign detention if they find students in the hallway without a pass. Please see Ms. Jackson if you have further questions.

    Field Trip Request Procedure

    All field trips requests should be submitted in the following way, check out this powerpoint for additional information on the steps.
    • Fill out electronic form at least 2 weeks in advance. This link will be available in the blog daily. Field Trip Request Form
    • Print your form submission. 
    • Email list of students attending to nurses. 
    • Get nurse and cafeteria signature at least 2 weeks in advance. They can sign anywhere at the bottom of your page. 
    • Turn in to either main office. 
    • Pass out permission slips and have students return. (English p.12, Other Languages)
    • The SPC has allotted each grade level $500 to put towards field trips; any questions should be send to treasurer@curleyk8.com.
