Shout Out

Shout out to Peter Pizzi, Bello and Sharon Pina-Pitts for putting on a fabulous arts show for our community on Thursday evening! The event was filled with families who were so proud of their child's accomplishments! Thank you for bringing art alive in our community!

 

Shout out to David Diaz, Jessica Burque and Laurie Ciardi for all their efforts in organizing MCAS. There are many behind the scenes details such as scheduling, group accommodations and documenting information about each student on Pearson! Thank you for your communication and efforts to make this such a smooth testing window!

Shout out to Melanie B for escorting a scared new student to his classroom and then to dismissal. We really appreciate you so calmly making sure this part of his day was covered at a moment's notice.

Shout out to Suzanne Demarco for coming to my class to take data on a student and then staying to teach 2 lessons on her planning time while I dealt with a behavioral issue. You saved the day!

Shout out Pete Mullin for being a positive role model for middle schoolers! They love having you as the baseball coach!

Shout out to the Tenacity 6th graders for bringing the Staniar Open trophy back to its rightful place at the Curley! Janiah Saint Germain, Wally Pimentel, Zev Ramey-Winikur and Chris Muzac represented the school proudly, staying focused through last Friday's rain postponement and making the most out of the extra practice days. Chris and Zev's forehand/dropshot combo on match point was a shining example of the teamwork, strategy, and calmness under pressure that this year's 6th grade group has worked hard to build. Thank you to Ms. Ricketts and Ms. Lieberman, who as usual came out and provided a fan section for the team.

 

Shout out to all staff and students that completed the Run to Remember this weekend! They all trained for and ran either a 5k or half marathon! We are so proud of all the Flying Lions that set these goals, worked hard and accomplished this too! Congrats to you all!

Pride T-Shirt

Curley Pride Shirts will continue to be sold through Wednesday, May 29th. The Curley staff pre-order price is $16. To order, please email Melanie Bourgeault the following information: 1) number of shirts, 2) sizes of shirts, and 3) how you intend to pay (cash, check, Venmo). If using Venmo, send your total to @Melanie-Bourgeault to finalize the pre-order. Otherwise, you can always reserve a shirt at the LGBT picnic Thursday, May 30th (6pm). Shirts sold at the picnic will be the community price of $20. We will be sending out information shortly regarding how you can sign up to march with the Curley on June 8th! Math Weekly Resource

George Lucas founded Edutopia back in 1991 to improve K-12 education. The Edutopia Website has short articles and video clips that highlight effective teaching strategies. Within the math section, one of my favorite resources is the 60 second video that explains the 3-Read Protocol for word problems. There’s an article that highlights the best free and low cost apps to use in math instruction. Another article focuses on how to include more real-world math, including a cool example of a real-world math wall. There are resources in many other areas as well, so this is definitely not just for math instruction. Among the most popular topics are brain-based learning, classroom management, and differentiated instruction. The brain-based section includes some excellent tips for helping students strengthen executive functioning skills. All of the articles are short and very easy to read and the 60-second strategy videos are particularly great for really quick and easy PD. https://www.edutopia.org

Special Education Progress Reports

We are upon our third round of Progress Reports. Grades close on June 14th and Progress Reports are due Tuesday, June 11th at 12pm. This will provide a window for our office and the clerk to review, print, copy, and have progress reports ready to be distributed with report cards the week of June 17th. We need enough time to submit translation requests and have them ready as well.

LGBTQ+ Picnic

Come join us for our annual LGBTQ+ Picnic on Thursday, May 30th at 6PM! All families are welcome to come and bring their own picnic and share in our celebration! The picnic will take place on the Curley field; in case of rain we will be in the upper school cafeteria.

K2, 1st and 2nd grade teachers

The end of year window for BAS is open from May 20 - June 14. Be sure to find the highest instructional level and a hard level for each child. All data must be uploaded to the BAS Spreadsheet by June 17th. Caitlyn will communicate coverage ASAP.

STAR ELA Spring Benchmark May 28th -31st (Grades 3-8 Only)

Spring ELA benchmark testing for Grades 3-8 will take place from Tuesday, May 28th through end of day Friday, May 31st. Testing should be scheduled during WIN block or other convenient time. All students, regardless of performance level, must take the spring STAR Reading benchmark assessment. Students can access STAR Reading through Clever under the blue "R" tile. Testing should take no longer than 20 minutes and is group administered. The data we collect provides valuable insights into a child's growth as a reader. Please remind your students of the importance of this testing and be sure to provide a quiet, distraction-free testing environment, so all students can do their best. To assure consistency, all benchmark testing must occur during the prescribed testing window. Please contact Eileen Cronin if you have any questions or concern.

ANNOUNCING International Week Dates for SY 2019-20!

Based on data from the 2018 International Committee Feedback survey, International Week for the upcoming school year has been scheduled for the week of December 2-6, 2019. The expectation is that all 56 homerooms will participate in this cultural exchange, sharing what they learn with their buddy classes. As you make plans for next year, we encourage you to start thinking about a country to study and how it might connect to your curriculum

Curley Arrival Changes 6/1/19

Starting June 1st we will be changing our arrival procedures and families will no longer be allowed to walk their child to class. This is a pilot to help us prepare for the start of next year. To ensure that our implementation of this new policy goes smoothly, we will be doing the following:

• Communicating with families about the upcoming changes. This flyer will go home to families to explain the policy change. Please be proactive in reaching out to families you anticipate will struggle with this new policy.
• Families will be able to give feedback using this form when implementation begins in June.
• We will also be sending out robocalls over the next month to prepare families.
• For staff members who encounter families at the door, please use this language to frame and describe our new arrival policy.
• Finally, please review this arrival document to see revised morning duty posts. It is especially important that those staff members who are posted at doors are able to communicate our new policy to families. 

Boosterthon

The SPC is leading the Boosterthon Fundraiser for the 2nd year. The Boosterthon team needs to come in for 10-15 min to meet with each team and explain the process. Boosterthon Fun Run will take place on Wednesday, June 12th.

School Visit & Observations

I would like to introduce Dr. Claire White and Karen White from EFA. Both Karen and Claire will be visiting classrooms to conduct an instructional inventory of the practices we use here at Curley across K-8. They will be collecting data the week of April 30-May 25. Please welcome them into our community.

Detention

Students in Middle School should be submitted on the Google Form for Detention if they are tardy without a pass, missing from class, or in the hallway without a pass. Adults should ask to see the pass to make sure it has the accurate date and time. Any adults in the building can assign detention if they find students in the hallway without a pass. Please see Ms. Jackson if you have further questions.

Field Trip Request Procedure

All field trips requests should be submitted in the following way, check out this powerpoint for additional information on the steps.

• Fill out electronic form at least 2 weeks in advance. This link will be available in the blog daily. Field Trip Request Form
• Print your form submission. 
• Email list of students attending to nurses. 
• Get nurse and cafeteria signature at least 2 weeks in advance. They can sign anywhere at the bottom of your page. 
• Turn in to either main office. 
• Pass out permission slips and have students return. (English p.12, Other Languages)
• The SPC has allotted each grade level $500 to put towards field trips; any questions should be send to treasurer@curleyk8.com.

Sick Day Procedure (teachers and paraprofessionals)

• Call/text Katie Grassa at 857-265-4954 immediately, no matter how late/early Enter the absence in SubCentral (teachers only). Link: https://bostonps.eschoolsolutions.com/logOnInitAction.do
• Enter absence on Boston Employees Self Service
• If it is after 6:30am, also send an email to Katie Grassa, David Diaz and the secretary.
