Shout Out

Shout out to Curley Staff from a Curley Parent. This weekend I was at the Plant Sale and parent shared the following. "We have been a part of the Curley School for 4 years and my daughter has had learning difficulties from the start. We have interacted with so many adults that I would be afraid I would miss someone if I started to name them. We are impressed with how well each adult knows our daughter and believes in her potential. We know she will succeed because of your school supports her year after year." Kudos to you all!

Shout out to Annette Beaudrault for organizing a Curley Alumni speaker series for her middle school electives students. They were thrilled to meet a former Curley student today who is graduating from Suffolk Law School later this month.

Shout out to 6th graders, Amillya Mayers and Ryleigh Daughtry Stickles, for reminding us of a student who passed away a few years ago and how we need to replant her garden. Thank you for caring about Daria's memory. We were able to share your works with her family and it brought them such comfort that you all still think of her! Thank you for caring about others! Also thank you to Ms. Signes for organizing this annual planting event for her former students!

Math MCAS Grades 4/5/6

We have updated the Testing Schedule for the 2018-2019 Math MCAS MCAS Calendar & Daily Schedule. Please review the daily schedule for the testing days, lunches, and Specials. Click on the sheets at the bottom of the page. Let Mr. Diaz know by Monday 5/6 if there is an issue.

You also need to check your Testing Session (most Homeroom teachers will have TTS session as well) and make sure that your password is working so you can access the Pearson Access Next website. Jessica Burke and Renee Ward have updated the list of small groups, proctors, and testing locations Math MCAS 2019 Grades 4-6

In addition, please review the slides about Monitoring Test Sessions and as well as the your Test Administrator Manual and take time to go over the 2019 MCAS Roles and Responsibilities document. I am also attaching a copy of the 2019 MCAS Check List to help you stay organized before, during, and after testing.

We have enough headphones for all students but students are allowed to bring their own. The Admin team will be stationed again in Ms. Grassa's office and we will have tickets ready at 7:45 am. We are testing more students this time and as a result, the 1st day we might need more time to check everybody in. Please contact a member of the the Admin Team if you have any questions.

Math Weekly Resource

If you have ever participated in a math professional development workshop, you’ve probably heard the name Deborah Ball. Based the University of Michigan School of Education, Professor Ball is one of the most respected math educators in the world. In an effort to make the work of her team more accessible to teachers around the world, Deborah Ball and her colleagues created the TeachingWorks Web site. They are regularly adding and updating resources at the Web site. A good first stop is The Work of Teaching tab. This section includes information about their Core Ideas and High-leverage Practices. These two sections make great material for a CPT discussion to help frame goals for grade-level teams around math instruction. The growing video library - available in the Support & Resources tab - is also a great resource for a CPT discussion around math.

May, 2019 Curley Cares Student Awards

Use this form to recognize up to three of the students you work with who you "caught" caring about themselves (perhaps during MCAS?), each other, or their school. As always, be on the lookout for students who exhibit consistent or improved understanding of the Curley Cares values as demonstrated by a specific deed, general conduct, overall academic perseverance and/or improvement, or some other form of participation. Use the MAY 2019 FORM to submit names so students you work with can receive an award at our Friday, May 17, 2019 Curley Shares assemblies. If you'd like, please check out this list of students to review which students have already received awards this school year. Submissions are DUE Monday, May 13, 2019 by 7:00pm

Ramadan

Ramadan will begin at sunset on Sunday, May 5th and last through sundown on Tuesday, June 4th. Ramadan is the ninth month of the lunar Islamic calendar, and it officially begins the morning after the crescent moon is visible to the eye. Below is some further information. Please note that this may impact students during the school day and some may not want to be in the cafeteria where others are eating. Please let the admin team know if we can support a student in any way. 

EL Summer Program Forms 2019

Summer school registration for ELL's begins next week. Attached are the applications for ELL'S in every language. If you want students to attend please give them the registration form and have them return it Waverly no later than May 24, 2019. Seats on a first come first serve basis so the quicker students return the forms the quicker we can enroll them. This programming is for all ELL'S 1-5 enter grades 3-12. Curl Up and Read, Curley! Week 8 Update

Grade 3 fought back this week, reaching an unbelievable 89.9% of their independent reading goal, just nudging out Grade 4 by one percent. Grade 4 is keeping the pressure on, scoring 88.9% of their AR target. Grade 5 showed real determination, besting their previous rank by more than ten percentage points, rounding out the field at 73.8% of goal. Only one week remains before the title of “Curl Up and Read, Curley” champ is named!

STAR ELA Spring Benchmark May 28th -31st (Grades 3-8 Only)

Spring ELA benchmark testing for Grades 3-8 will take place from Tuesday, May 28th through end of day Friday, May 31st. Testing should be scheduled during WIN block or other convenient time. All students, regardless of performance level, must take the spring STAR Reading benchmark assessment.

Students can access STAR Reading through Clever under the blue "R" tile. Testing should take no longer than 20 minutes and is group administered. The data we collect provides valuable insights into a child's growth as a reader. Please remind your students of the importance of this testing and be sure to provide a quiet, distraction-free testing environment, so all students can do their best. To assure consistency, all benchmark testing must occur during the prescribed testing window. Please contact Eileen Cronin if you have any questions or concern.

New Copy Machine Upper School Main Office

We are very excited about our new copy machine that makes color copies! Everyone is welcome to use the machine but we will be monitoring the color copies. It is not unlimited and we are asking teachers to use it only when essential. An admin or secretary will need to give you access to use color copying and we can track how many color copies are made by certain staff. Everyone can continue to make black and white copies and to do so please follow these steps:

• When you hit copy the password would be 0000
• When down loading on to your laptop the drive is FW series PS kit for windows

ANNOUNCING International Week Dates for SY 2019-20!

Based on data from the 2018 International Committee Feedback survey, International Week for the upcoming school year has been scheduled for the week of December 2-6, 2019. The expectation is that all 56 homerooms will participate in this cultural exchange, sharing what they learn with their buddy classes. As you make plans for next year, we encourage you to start thinking about a country to study and how it might connect to your curriculum

Curley Arrival Changes 6/1/19

Starting June 1st we will be changing our arrival procedures and families will no longer be allowed to walk their child to class. This is a pilot to help us prepare for the start of next year. To ensure that our implementation of this new policy goes smoothly, we will be doing the following:

• Communicating with families about the upcoming changes. This flyer will go home to families to explain the policy change. Please be proactive in reaching out to families you anticipate will struggle with this new policy.
• Families will be able to give feedback using this form when implementation begins in June.
• We will also be sending out robocalls over the next month to prepare families.
• For staff members who encounter families at the door, please use this language to frame and describe our new arrival policy.
• Finally, please review this arrival document to see revised morning duty posts. It is especially important that those staff members who are posted at doors are able to communicate our new policy to families.

Boosterthon

The SPC is leading the Boosterthon Fundraiser for the 2nd year. The Boosterthon team needs to come in for 10-15 min to meet with each team and explain the process. Boosterthon Fun Run will take place on Wednesday, June 12th.

School Visit & Observations

I would like to introduce Dr. Claire White and Karen White from EFA. Both Karen and Claire will be visiting classrooms to conduct an instructional inventory of the practices we use here at Curley across K-8. They will be collecting data the week of April 30-May 25. Please welcome them into our community.

Retention

As we prepare to close out the school year, we must begin thinking about those students who may not meet the requirements to move on to the next grade level. The district acknowledges that a student may have to repeat a grade following review by the principal, teacher, parent and support staff (Special Ed Coordinator, if applicable; Guidance Counselor). For additional information regarding the BPS Promotion Policy please refer to the 2018-2019 Guide to BPS For Students and Families (extra copies can be found in the Guidance Office). Once you review the promotion policy, and determine that a student is a strong candidate for retention, please email Ms. Silva (K1-3) at csilva2@bostonpublicschools.org or Ms. Santos (4-8) at ssantos2@bostonpublicschools.org (grades 4-8). Please note, Ms. Grassa has the final authority to make decisions on retention.

Detention

Students in Middle School should be submitted on the Google Form for Detention if they are tardy without a pass, missing from class, or in the hallway without a pass. Adults should ask to see the pass to make sure it has the accurate date and time. Any adults in the building can assign detention if they find students in the hallway without a pass. Please see Ms. Jackson if you have further questions.

Field Trip Request Procedure

All field trips requests should be submitted in the following way, check out this powerpoint for additional information on the steps.

• Fill out electronic form at least 2 weeks in advance. This link will be available in the blog daily. Field Trip Request Form
• Print your form submission. 
• Email list of students attending to nurses. 
• Get nurse and cafeteria signature at least 2 weeks in advance. They can sign anywhere at the bottom of your page. 
• Turn in to either main office. 
• Pass out permission slips and have students return. (English p.12, Other Languages)
• The SPC has allotted each grade level $500 to put towards field trips; any questions should be send to treasurer@curleyk8.com.

Sick Day Procedure (teachers and paraprofessionals)

• Call/text Katie Grassa at 857-265-4954 immediately, no matter how late/early Enter the absence in SubCentral (teachers only). Link: https://bostonps.eschoolsolutions.com/logOnInitAction.do
• Enter absence on Boston Employees Self Service
• If it is after 6:30am, also send an email to Katie Grassa, David Diaz and the secretary.
